At least influencers know how to press the send button once the post is actually complete.

Are you 14 OP?

Brownpaint81 · 02/06/2025 15:12

They could legitimately ask that you “do one”

ie stop following them

but that doesn’t seem to have occurred to you

Do you watch QVC? Read online reviews of products and services? (Good) influencers are marketeers in video format who convince people to buy something based on their recommendation. Unless you judge sales people in general, it’s unfair to say why do we need influencers when marketing a few decades ago was movie stars and young models on airbrushed billboards and magazines. They still exist but I’m going to believe that an influencer is more likely to use the fragrance that I’m looking at in Boots than a Hollywood A-lister.

Edited

This ☝️.

They're just adverts/walking billboards featuring ordinary people. Some are trying to flog you stuff directly or they're more subtle showing you how they live and that you can be just like me if you do xyz.

I have to say, I was fascinated when the chap of Strictly’s girlfriend was making an informative video about making a lamp with a wine bottle and it exploded. She was hurt and thankfully she’s OK now but I got to thinking about who was watching these random videos of people making lamps out of wine bottle. Inexpertly as she had never done it before.

Magicalbeaver · 02/06/2025 17:22

I know what you mean. But influencers only exist because people watch them. If you watch them, you're contributing to the problem. And no, I don't watch any influencers.

Snorlaxo · 02/06/2025 17:28

I think that there’s an ageism angle to influencer hate because it’s very young people who dominate the most successful accounts. Young people aren’t watching tv any more and are paying not to see ads (eg YouTube, Netflix) so influencer marketing is how the industry want to suck them in.

There has been some dangerous crap like eating laundry pods (why the fuck did anyone copy that ?) but if you’re talking about someone buying Mrs Hinch fabric conditioner or whatever then I can’t see the problem.

Well that is just kids doing dumb shit isn’t and there’s nothing new there. About 25 years ago I recall my friends and me seeing how long we could spray a cab of deodorant on our skin. Egging each other on through the pain.

But it kind of begs the question of why are you wasting your time watching that?

ilovesooty · 02/06/2025 17:46

I'm not annoyed by influencers, probably because I don't follow any.

BallerinaRadio · 02/06/2025 17:47

Yeah I hate people that post on the internet that offer absolutely nothing to the discourse just post meaningless opinions with nothing to back it up

Bloody hate those people

Mistyglade · 02/06/2025 17:50

I hit yabu because you need to spend less time looking at vacuous people on sm.

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/06/2025 17:54

If we don't need them, then why are there so many, making a living wage off the back of what they do?

Clearly, to achieve that (particularly via Youtube) you have to have a lot of people watching your content.

I don't see people eating laundry pods or running head first into one another or whatever the latest stupidity is... I don't use tiktok.

I do however watch a variety of people doing things I find interesting, on Youtube, and quite a few of those people are making decent money.

Snorlaxo · 02/06/2025 18:07

You should have said that it’s the dangerous stuff that you hate. I thought you meant people selling stuff.

I don’t get the stuff like eating laundry pods maybe because I don’t watch the sort of people who have the most followers who have to consider being increasingly shocking to get even more followers and hype.

My preferences are more mundane like “here’s what I bought at Aldi to make these dinners this week ” sort of thing.

Tiktok can be a brilliant resource and is endlessly entertaining depending on your fyp - I have never seen the videos aimed at children because I'm a middle aged woman.

feelingbleh · 02/06/2025 19:04

Proper influencers are fine its their job. Beggers are not
