Car smelling of cigarette smoke??

Weird situation, wondering if anyone has any ideas how this could have happened?

Drove car home last Tuesday evening, all normal.
Went out to car Wednesday morning, opened the passenger door to put bags in, it absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke!!

No one in our household smokes (kids cars too young)

The car was parked on the driveway overnight, it might have been left unlocked (husband can’t remember if he locked it) but we live in a very quiet cul de sac, very few people passing by, and nothing was taken from car, still had phone catcher, sunglasses and coins in!

Later that day I was cleaning said car, and found cigarette ash in the drinks holder…. Just one piece as though someone has flicked their cigarette in there. So very weird!

I’ve cleaned the car, but got in it yesterday and again it smells so strongly of smoke. Checked under all mats and chairs incase of a stray fag butt, nothing.

Any ideas anyone?? It’s driving me mad!!

Someone has been smoking in your car op
there was ash in the drinks holder, that’s definitive proof

so either someone in your family is smoking
or
someone walking back drunk last night chances the door was open, it was, so took a seat and lit up

Your partner is a secret smoker. Or they drove someone who smoked.

Surely both of those are far more realistic solutions than some random person is breaking in to your car to smoke (a single) cigarette…?

faerietales · 01/06/2025 18:38

I would bet good money that DH was smoking in there, or had someone with him who was smoking that he doesn't want you to know about.

KrisAkabusi · 01/06/2025 18:42

Either your husband is a secret smoker, or he gave a lift to a smoker. Someone walking down your quiet road, trying all the car handles until he found one unlocked to have a quiet fag i , is just too ridiculous to be plausible.

SolDeJaneiro · 01/06/2025 18:45

That’s what I can’t understand, some random on a Tuesday night lighting up in my car, on my driveway!!
But we were all home, all night.
If my husband wanted to smoke, or give a lift to a smoker, surely he would use his own car…
I just can’t work it out!!

My friend genuinely did have someone use their car as a place to smoke and sleep - but they do live quite close to a rehabilitation home for people who have come out of rehab.

So… it’s someone with access to your car keys

Do any neighbours have a teen that could have snuck in?

SolDeJaneiro · 01/06/2025 19:01

No neighbours with teenagers, all very old or young families.
We also have a visible ring doorbell, it has run out of battery so didn’t record anything (typical) but surely a passer by wouldn’t know it wasnt recording them!

Have you asked your husband op?

Exactly. The most logical answer is the right answer here. Have you asked your husband?

soupyspoon · 01/06/2025 19:11

Presumably OP knows whether her husband is a smoker or not, or an ex smoker or not?

If this happened to me I wouldnt need to ask my OH if he has smoked in the car because he doesnt smoke

OP if you hadnt found ash I would have asked you if you get funny smells in your nose, I do and its not always in the same location, so I might smell fags quite strongly in the office but not anywhere else, but the reality is its in my nose. Its awful. I smell burnt toast a lot, cat wee, fags. Never anything nice. I have a chronic sinus condition and this is quite common

However the ash suggests that the car has been leant to someone.

SolDeJaneiro · 01/06/2025 19:22

Husband definitely doesn’t smoke, he is as mystified as me.
Could ash be blown through the fans/ air con?? It was a whole piece though, I would assume it would be tiny bits if so… I did pull a feather out of the fan a few months ago though.

Yes I get a lot of feathers in the car, never sure where they're from
