To ask if you always check the bill at a restaurant

DH and I went out for pizza last night. I've noticed that these days, instead of bringing the bill and then coming back for payment, they bring the bill then stand there with the card machine.

Felt a bit rushed checking bill whilst waitress was standing there. Glad I did as they'd charged for an extra glass of wine - £9.

Do you check or just tap your card?

I always check

Lulu1919 · 01/06/2025 07:40

Always check !

Changingplace · 01/06/2025 07:40

Yeah I do check it but I agree it feels rushed when they’re standing over you with the card machine.

2chocolateoranges · 01/06/2025 07:41

Always check, if they bring the card machine over at the same time then they just have to wait until I've checked the bill.

heavenisaplaceonearth · 01/06/2025 07:41

Always but it never takes long to run my eye down the bill. Most places give it to you and then go and get the machine but if it came together I’d just expect them to wait.

LizziesTwin · 01/06/2025 07:42

Always check.

Oblomov25 · 01/06/2025 07:42

Always, even if it's a quick glance.

Gundogday · 01/06/2025 07:44

Yes, I check.

BunnyRuddington · 01/06/2025 07:47

Always check. We ate at a local pub once, just the once, who thought we were all a bit too sloshed to notice 2 extra bottles of wine on the bill and then got really shirty when we asked for them to be taken back off.

What they’d failed to notice was that whilst some were sloshed some were sober and none of us are stupid.

We found out later they did this regularly. Unsurprisingly they’ve now closed.

Londonrach1 · 01/06/2025 07:47

Always why wouldn't you ...

Yes, it just felt like an age because DH had had a couple of extra toppings, a garlic dip and two different beers!

I was thinking later, if I'd been on a first date with a guy, would I think he were a bit uptight for checking the bill!

If someone I was dating thought I was uptight for checking the bill, they aren’t right for me. I think it’s common sense to check the bill is correct- mistakes happen.

beetr00 · 01/06/2025 08:15

Always check, more so now as many restaurants are automatically adding their service charge %

Viviennemary · 01/06/2025 08:19

I quickly glance through it usually. Some places are a bit chaotic with their pricing. They might be clueless but hopefully their customers aren't.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 01/06/2025 08:23

Yes, definitely always check, even if it’s just a 4 mains/ 4 drinks sort of Quick Look.

I’ve had a bill before where either they hadn’t cleared the people before off or someone had put the wrong tables orders on as well as the first half of the bill wasn’t ours at all - glad I checked that one and easy enough to sort out as we’d only had anything after a certain point.

Fizbosshoes · 01/06/2025 08:30

We always try to guess the bill before it comes. Once we were all wildly out because they had given us a discount for something. Another time they had forgotten to put the bottle of wine we had. (We asked them to add it)

BallerinaRadio · 01/06/2025 08:31

I'd like to think I'd notice if the bill was £9 more than I was expecting, unless you're someone that just orders without looking at price

Topplantpot · 01/06/2025 08:32

Check every time. The other day dh got someone else's bill who had spent £100 more than he did. It happens a lot - enough for me to never trust a tap without a check.

Moveoverdarlin · 01/06/2025 08:33

It pisses me off when they leave the bill then bugger off for another 15 mins. If I ask for the bill I just want to pay it there and then. I’ll glance at it, and it will take no more than 3 secs to see if it’s right.

Ok I would definitely notice this without needing to see the bill 😂

Topplantpot · 01/06/2025 08:36

Sometimes staff have looked alarmed whilst we check the bill and ask nervously if everything's ok. We are quite relaxed about saying we're just checking the bill...they can read into it whatever way they like.

Tbrh · 01/06/2025 08:37

Always make DH check, he's better at maths 😉

Spoiler alert, they're busy and just want you out of the restaurant as you check out the bill in a smug sorry relaxed manner
