Sunglasses

I like to wear sunglasses almost all the time when I'm out now as it makes me feel like I can avoid awkward eye contact and I also don't need any eye make up!

Is that weird?

Worked for Roy Orbison.

Fine outdoors but you probably look a bit of a knob when inside a shop or whatever.

I do the same, makes me feel more comfortable.

When I started wearing hard contact lenses back in the year dot the advice was to always wear sunglasses if the weather was remotely sunny because the lenses made your eyes more sensitive to sun glare.

So I ve always been in the habit of wearing sunglasses a lot. Now I've got cataracts developing I wear them even more.

So yes wearing sunglasses is the norm for me and I never leave the house without a pair.

BUT when I was younger it was considered bad manners to hold a conversation with someone whilst wearing sunglasses because the person you were talking to couldn't see your eyes and eye contact was an important part of social interaction. So if I'm having a conversation with someone I usually take my sunglasses off.

I wear sunnies most of the time when I'm out as I have blue eyes which I'm told by the optometrist is more susceptible to light damage. So no, I don't think it's weird.

NeelyOHara · 31/05/2025 15:11

Anna Wintour never seems to take hers off so seems acceptable. George Michel too rarely removed them.

Comedycook · 31/05/2025 15:12

I always wear sunglasses....they're prescription so I need them to actually see! So when I go into shops or whatever I just keep them on.

Createausername1970 · 31/05/2025 15:15

I wear sun glasses or dark prescription glasses most of the time. Sunlight contributes to cataracts and as they seem to run in the family I made a conscious decision to do what I can to fend them off.

If other people don't like it.... tough.

It depends, on a sunny day then no, or if it's been sunny...the middle of winter you look a bit of a dick to be honest. Sorry to cause offence but it's my view.

I also think driving in sunglasses in cloudy weather should be illegal.

I wear reactive prescription glasses. A lady's dog went berserk at me when I was walking mine recently, tbf, mine is super reactive so I was just dragging her along. I said to the lady something along the lines of 'dogs, eh, good idea at the time' and, as she was wrestling hers too, said 'it's not your dog, she doesn't like your glasses'.

I still chuckle thinking about it. I hadn't realised until I got home and glanced at myself looking like Stevie Wonder in the mirror!

Ask Bono 😀

Yes but I think unless a casual encounter it’s rude to keep your sunglasses on if meeting someone. I mean you take your sunglasses off to greet them then you can put them back on.

MsPug · 31/05/2025 16:12

I'm convinced I have less crows feet because of my sunglasses habit

HeadingOutForJog · 31/05/2025 16:16

I wear sunnies all the time as I’m so sensitive to the light and squint and get headaches without them.

Well no, when I said "now" I meant literally now this time of year... and I don't wear glasses driving unless it's very bright

In what sort of scenario? I'm think out for a walk, school run, park... if I ran into someone in those situations I wouldn't take my glasses off

Many people have prescription sunglasses. If they took them off they wouldn’t be able to see properly
