Blackcurrant jelly babies are an abomination

.... and need to be abolished, along with pink French Fancies, decaff coffee and jammy red wine.

Prove me wrong.

You are right, OP.

Shocked at the vote though.

I love blackcurrants and also blackcurrant and glycerine throat pastilles. But I HATE blackcurrant jelly babies. They are indeed a crime against taste.

NoisyLemonDog · 31/05/2025 14:17

What?! They are the best jelly babies and fought over in our house. Pink french fancies are second best, after chocolate. On the fence about decaff coffee and the wine.

Are you a household of terrible people?!! I feel it's wrong to judge but my brain keeps going there 🤔

Correct order for eating all jelly-type sweets, ranked from "delicious" to "will only eat as there are no others left": black, red, orange, yellow and finally, green (bleugh).

So, op, YABVVU

No. The correct order for eating Jelly Babies (and everything else) is to eat the worst item first, saving the best one for last.

So, I eat yellow, orange red, green and then the best one of all, black, is last. Yummie! 😁

ChooseAtRandom · 31/05/2025 15:01

The hierarchy of French fancies is yellow, pink, brown. But the BEST were the tangy ones from the 90s. Pastel colours, and actually fruity icing. They were lovely.
I'm living in the US at the moment and I miss blackcurrant sweets. They do grape here instead, and it is VILE. Although I really dislike the taste of hfcs so I find a lot of the sweets here not good, grape (and cherry) artificial flavours are just so awful.

Thistooshallpass. · 31/05/2025 15:04

Black and red the best in any jelly sweet !

Dangermoo · 31/05/2025 13:17

Do you remember the gorgeous coloured Toffos? I can't think if there was one flavour I didn't like.

Banana, toffee, strawberry then chocolate .

I'm just bumbling in to say you are all wrong!

The best jelly flavoured sweet is the white one, the pear flavour. Best thing ever

Jelly babies are somewhat inferior to proper jelly sweets, but they're a bit odd with their hard outside. Jelly beans, however, are just great.

Pink French Fancies win all day long. I remember eating eight at a party about 45yrs ago and being very, very sick that night! I still prefer them, though! Apparently they were invented for Betty's Tearooms in Harrogate in the 1920's. I admit to liberating a small cake plate from there when I visited a few years ago...

I'm a bit sceptical that Bettys invented them ... but... their Fondant Fancies are actually the best in the world. No argument. Colour irrelevant. They're probably the most expensive in the world too but you can't have everything. Mr Kipling's are laughably awful in comparison.

Blackcurrant Jelly Babies are the best, @MatildaMovesMountains. Sorry. You can have my green ones.
Did you know they were originally developed and named Peace Babies by Bassett's to celebrate the end of WW1?

Turkish delight should also be abolished

I agree!

stayathomer · 31/05/2025 15:33

You had me until pink French fancies- they’re the best ones!!!

pizzaHeart · 31/05/2025 15:34

MatildaMovesMountains · 31/05/2025 14:46

Jammy basically means sweet when it comes to red wine - it is a horror beyond human comprehension.

Is it like Madeira?

monkeysox · 31/05/2025 15:45

Wynter25 · 31/05/2025 15:28

I agree!

Yellow/lemon Turkish delight is disgusting.
Quite like the pink one.

AnonMJ · 31/05/2025 15:46

No. I love the black ones.
Ageee on French fancies, decaf coffee and jammy red wine tho!!!

I am exactly the same, but I start with green as least favourite, then yellow and orange. Red and black are kept to last and savoured.

No, a million times more disgusting! I like Madeira.

The Norwegians have got it right; not a blackcurrant jellyman in sight. Plus they're stretchy.

Agree about jammy red wine then . It does sound vile.

RitaAndFrank · 31/05/2025 16:02

Blackcurrant (and strawberry) are the best.. I’m also partial to a pink French Fancy. In fact I’ve just had one of their special edition Strawberry and Cream ones. You’d hate them, OP!

itsgettingweird · 31/05/2025 16:07

Decaff coffee drinker here and I love it!

GF so can’t eat French fancies but when I could I agree the yellow are the best! Actually the white Christmas ones!

Jelly babies are fab. Especially the fake ones that are joined and the black/red combo is the best!

UABVU!

CornflowerDusk · 31/05/2025 16:08

They're terrible... Give them all to me!

Jojimoji · 31/05/2025 16:09

All french fancies are minging and all jelly babies rock.
