Colleague made sarky comment about me re. GB News

1000 replies

OneStepBeyondd · 30/05/2025 22:21

Discussion at work earlier - does anyone watch the news. Another colleague and I said we don’t mind GB news on occasion to which someone said (directed at me) - ‘I didn’t have you down as one of them’ in a judgemental tone.

Is it me or is that a bit rude and unnecessary?

Is GB News “far right” or you have been told it’s “far right” and you believe it???

GB news does not fit definition of “far right”

You should always watch variety of news “channels” to get perspective.

This is true. GB News does not fit my understanding of 'far right', they are more the conservative end of the Conservative Party. Their views on GC women are supportive - but, of course, some consider that believing in sex and that it matters is a 'far right' stance. Having watched some men waving their moobs about and mansplaining DSDs to young women (who look as if they know what a DSD is and the the man mansplaining is off his rocker), I think I might prefer GB News' stance on this issue!
Edited for typos

Nope. If you’re going to watch that ridiculous garbage then you’re going to have to take the comments.

How arrogant are you? You remind me of a colleague, who once said "you've got a lovely slim body but your face is quite chubby". My reply was "well it could be worse, I could have a fat arse like you". Judge and be judged.

Exactly. In turn people will judge the intolerant who make nasty comments.

Maybe the op’s colleague has made themselves the topic of discussion at the workplace.

I’m really sorry, but I would actively avoid anyone who admitted to watching GB news

But I suspect that they would also avoid me like the plague if they realised that I’m a Guardian reader 🤣

What about the people who consume both?

GB news is widely thought of, whether it is or not as a hard right news channel.
I would have not said this out loud at work, if If I watched GB news, which I dont.

@Etaerio It feels as if you're reading something into my posts which I really don't think I'm expressing: "Let me guess, do you work in an academic environment with an expectation that everyone subscribes to the same standard empty-headed leftish prejudices and bigotries? Do you ever think for yourself?"
Is it my tone or phrasing that grates?

When you addressed Lilly with a comment intended for me, I responded:

"Do keep up, Etaerio! You've responded to Lilly as if it was me.
Nope, not working in an academic environment in the slightest, just somewhere where a coworker's capacity to stay current and respond dynamically to events and pronouncements tends to be an indicator of their overall competence."

How does that seem "EXCITED"? "Do keep up!" is fairly standard MN banter, and my subsequent explanation to TENS related to a skills-set I'd referred to earlier.

But hey, what do I know, I'm just a migrant worker from a solidly working class background who misspells shit on the internet.

Being "a migrant worker from a solidly working class background" might win an argument in The Guardian comments section - it doesn't here.

You were very keen to make a - petty, was that the word you used? - point about me replying to the wrong post but have taken umbrage (yes, that's how the word is spelt) when you've been on the receiving end of the same behaviour. You can TRY to have it both ways but it won't work.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/05/2025 13:50

I watch it. It's not a news channel.

EveSix · 31/05/2025 13:59

Etaerio · 31/05/2025 12:57

But @hattie43 didn't claim GB News was "the only media to call out on a list of events." She referred to " the only channel" and "the only show". Did you deliberately misrepresent what she said because you were aware that your "counterexamples" actually aren't?

Actually, @hattie43 says: "It’s the only channel I’ve ever seen call out societal problems . It’s the only show to call out the injustice of the grooming gangs , the waspi women , the post office scandal. So many important injustices , the leasehold scandal being another."

@MikeRafone may be paraphrasing with the word 'media', but the gist is surely the same, and Mike has a valid point bringing the journalistic endeavours of Computer Weekly and Andrew Norfolk to Hattie's attention. FWIW, I'm pretty sure that by contrast, between them, Woman's Hour and You And Yours have reported on all of the issues Hattie mentions. Granted, they're special interest productions, albeit very mainstream, so it should be expected.

No, it's not a 'paraphrase' however much you want to whitewash it. It was a deliberate misrepresentation of what had been said.

EveSix · 31/05/2025 14:13

@Etaerio, yes, I obviously checked the spelling when you highlighted my error; that's how learning happens, as I know all too well being a person for whom English is an additional language. It seems my attempt at humour (although every word is true) didn't land too well either and you now think I'm vying for sympathy points. But you're quite right, it definitely won't wash on MN. (Note to self: only try that shtick in The Guardian comments section.)

I have definitely not taken umbrage to anything you've posted, but I am mesmerised by your rhetorical rigour (and vigour!) and, it appears, cannot stop myself from wanting to defend my posts in what feels like a somewhat surreal interaction, which I realise is probably futile.

I have just googled her, definitely not her!! And i wouldn't call a 46 year old elderly, the woman i saw is most likely in her 60s/70s, I'll have a search.

The GB news presenter in question is Lizzie Cundy. Her discussion was "should we call people fat?" her viewpoint was they need to be shamed to get them to lose weight. It was a Saturday night discussion show.

hattie43 · 31/05/2025 14:18

Lizzie Cundy is everywhere , she’s not a presenter she’s a rentavoice often on Jeremy vine and loose women .

BeUmberPombear · 31/05/2025 14:20

Gb news is the home of islamophobia, racism and bigotry. If I found one of my employees watching it, I'd fire them on the spot.

I remember a few years ago a staff member was accused of being a daily fail reader. I'm a firm believer in innocent till proven guilty but kept an eye on the person in the staffroom etc. As there was no evidence, we knew where he shopped enroute to work for snacks etc so questioned the shopkeeper. Along with his sandwiches ( meat which is another issue but not a red line) we found out his paper each morning was the daily fail. Needless to say he isn't working for us any longer. The sooner bigots are exposed the better for all of us and am proud to play a part in doing so. 👏

No, it runs deeper than this. Having a balance of views is healthy. I read the Times, Guardian and occasionally the Telegraph. My children watch you tube videos. The parts of GB news that I have seen are far more like watching a you tuber opine on issues of the day rather than watching BBC, Channel 4 or ITV news. I have 2 sets of relatives (different sides of family) who watch it regulary; and i have noted more racist language being used about NHS workers and young people than in the past

The boomers are attacked too I noticed

Not any more.

But what is a higher earner? If you're a pensioner, unemployed, minimum wage £40k sounds like a fortune.

You would fire somebody for watching GB News? 😆 🤣 😂 good luck with that in the tribunal. The left don't even see their own hypocrisy. Have said it before and I will keep saying it when I see it.

At an absolute minimum a higher rate tax payer.

You certainly have no idea of employment law, so I can't take you seriously. All hyperbolic nonsense.

They need reeducation at a centre deep in the Scottish hills at a purpose built centre 😂

I can’t tell if this is bumping up mn rhetoric another notch or not. Maybe you’ll be exposed as an employer in some way.
