Glorifying double mastectomies - museum exhibition

BristolW0man · 30/05/2025 14:17

Artwork on prominent display that glorifies double mastectomies - part of 'Gender Stories' exhibition. This in Bristol's free of charge museum, popular with families and school trips. All funded with the public purse via National Lottery and Arts Council England.

I don't think this should be on display for all to see (different if it's a separate area, but this is in the main hall of the museum) and I certainly don't think public money should be paying for it. AIBU?

I find it troubling and upsetting. I think a lot of women who have had a mastectomy or have lost a mother or sister to breast cancer may also feel upset by it.

I have breast cancer, it doesn’t upset me, I thought the art with “you are loved” was more about surviving cancer. I don’t see anything in the art that makes it about trans men at all.

AnnabelleQuelle · 31/05/2025 15:38

I was about to come on and say that double mastectomies for breast cancer should be celebrated… however if this is women glorifying chopping bits off their body for no good reason then I am appalled.

if I told you I wanted to chop of my leg as identified as a pirate, would you get me mental health support or let me chop my leg off and encourage me to do so?

Silverbelles · 31/05/2025 15:44

AnnabelleQuelle · 31/05/2025 15:35

No @Shellianotwheels what is dangerous is normalising chopping bits off your body for any other than self-gratification

It's embarrassing that you have so little understanding of gender dysphoria that you call it self gratification and then use this uninformed opinion to make a judgement.

I have discussed it with my ten year old. I can’t remember and won’t bore you with every word that was spoken but yes, we have talked about how some people feel they are born in the wrong bodies and have operations to change them. We went to the IWM last week and had lots of conversations about war - I think that’s a much more terrifying concept as it’s out of one’s control. But it happens, as does body modification, and I want my children to be prepared for the world they will inhabit when I’m not by their side to guide them through their every day

Wow. Wow. That’s horrifying what you say to your 10 year old. Complete minimisation and normalisation of it, so no wonder you’re fine with this. Surgical mutilation as a response to disordered and delusional thinking clearly A-OK with you.

Like I said upthread, this thread contains some of the most shocking posts I’ve seen on MN.

I think it’s arty people saying bore off boring women.
Huge numbers of women battling cancer is not as glamorous and cool.

There are exhibitions about breast cancer. Here is one.

Not everything has to be about the same group of people. It's absolute fine for there to be an exhibition about two different things, one doesn't cancel the other.

It’s horrifying that I tell my child a universal truth? Some people DO feel they are born in the wrong bodies and that some of those people DO have surgery? What’s incorrect about that? Did I say I encouraged him to do the same? Did I say I haven’t also had nuanced conversations about gender stereotypes, the reasons why people might feel that way? Did I say we had a short conversation in which I brushed over and minimised anything? Or did I tell you that I wouldn’t bore you with every word that was said? Don’t make assumptions on people’s opinions when they haven’t shared them.

Would you think anorexia being turned into art and displayed in this manner acceptable?

Honestly, I wouldn't put it past certain sections of society to do this.

.

Silverbelles · 31/05/2025 15:59

Ddakji · 31/05/2025 14:37

Small children don’t need to know this at all. Older children can learn it from their parents (though a society where this needs to be explained to children ever is a failed society). No one needs to have this normalised, celebrated or glorified. It’s extreme self harm.

Would you think anorexia being turned into art and displayed in this manner acceptable?

There are exhibitions about anorexia. Here is one.

https://butterfly.org.au/get-involved/campaigns/gallery-of-lived-experience/

There is art and exhibitions where it is shown for all avenues of human experiences and suffering. It is how people share their experiences and feelings and it is important that society sees and understands peoples struggles. It's what leads to empathy instead of judgement.

I notice you never replied to me proving your accusation of me turning up just to troll the righteous Mumsnet users against this exhibition. Charming. Though I'm not surprised.

‘Imagine if you were born a woman, but also happened to have an additional penis that of course completely interfered with your ability to properly identify as the sex you identified with?’

‘if you have a dick, you ain’t a chick, ‘ as the store holder famously remarked.

The mental gymnastics performed by the TRA, the cool girls and the oh so open minded on this thread are ….remarkable.

If there IS a balanced discussion on this as part of the exhibition I will eat my hat, as they say.
Anyway, I live not far away, and plan to go and have a look. If any other Bristolians would like to join me, pm me.

That's a very odd message to take from an exhibition about transgender peoples experiences.

The exhibition is not about mastectomies or cancer. It's about being transgender, of which mastectomy is a feature for some, but not others.

Literally no transgender person anywhere is saying bore off mums with cancer

Actually I have seen a post where a girl/young woman was annoyed because he mother with breast cancer was getting her “top surgery” before she was. Sick.

Brave and stunning artwork. It's so inspiring that young girls are being told that they can be whatever they want to be..

This sounds flippant but I honestly struggle to see how it’s not pretty accurate.

The only way I can understand so called gender affirming care is that it’s a form of cosmetic surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is only performed on the nhs in very limited circumstances, and, as far as I know never due to mental health reasons (please correct me if I am wrong).

Therefore I do not think any of the cosmetic alterations that people who call themselves trans make should be available on the nhs. This includes hormone treatment.

In an astonishing twist, this is the artist that creating this imagery.

Posting without further comment. Possibly the photo won’t load in which case it’s a photo of Samo White holding a baseball bat in the trans colours, and the post reads “made a new Terf toy today.” Hashtag “Everdsayistransdayofvengeance”

Apparently the enlightened position is to pretend transgender people don't exist.

This thread is ridiculous. Calm down a minute and realise the teens you are so concerned about moved on from trans issues a year ago.

What exactly do they want vengeance for?

Genuine question.

Well, they can't be men. They don't have the chromosomes for it.

Sausagenbacon · 30/05/2025 18:10

So it's art? It looks like propaganda to me.
And you really don't understand that it's a celebration of women having healthy breasts amputated?

Same can be said about women who have breast implants despite having healthy breasts?

I don’t know.

I made the mistake of going onto Samo’s instagram page. There I discovered an organisation called Trans Secret Santa who sent out secret Santa presents to “trans youth” which doesn’t sound dodgy at all, and most horribly, a photo of an 18 year old girl with a male name with this imagery of Samo’s freshly tattooed into her arm.

The trans trend is/was ridiculous. It's good that it's fading but for some the damage has already been done. I work in a university and the current UG cohorts were of this generation, and it's really wild how many of them have been trans-ed.

I have no issue with the very small number of people who are trans and likely would have been regardless of anything, but the trend and affirmation are something else. One of the most interesting takes I heard on it was from Martina Navratilova, speaking about a trans tennis player who joined the women's tour while she was playing (Renee Someone). She had no issue with Renee and didn't really care about them/her playing on the women's tour because they were one person, and additionally one person who had presumably had hormones and surgeries and bits removed. She did mention that Renee had managed to reach top 30 while not really in shape and at the age of 40, when he'd never been inside the top 100 on the men's tour, and conceded that she might have felt differently if she'd lost to her!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't have an issue with people being trans... But I do have an issue with it being shoved down people's throats and forced onto those who are impressionable. I'm not going to misgender people because I'm not rude, but I don't think I'll ever be able to change the way I feel when a 6'3" person with visible facial hair tells me they're she/her, or when someone earnestly informs the room that their pronouns are xie/xiem/xiers or (worst) that the person has no pronouns at all...

I believe that Martina, having done a lot of research after being told by trans activist to educate herself and do better, no longer thinks Rene should have been playing in the women’s game regardless of how medically transitioned Rene was, because going through male puberty cannot ever be fully undone with regards to the physical advantages it gives men over women.

I don't suppose the people promoting this gave women who required surgery for cancer a second thought.
The next installment will be a bearded man with implants out as men can be topless wherever and it's fine to celebrate dysphoria.
Now recruiting children on half-term.

"Recruiting children in half term?"
What a bizarre, conspiracy theory take.
How do you even think that would work?
You make it sound like trans people are there at fairs with trestle tables and bunting asking people if they want to become trans and handing out flyers Confused Hmm
Also sound like you're a throwback to the 80s with "gay people are recruiting our kids into being gay!"
Exact same bigotry and arguments rehashed.
