Shamelessly posting for traffic. I am desperate. Went on holiday at Easter, lost my tooth retainer (200 quid down the drain). I thought I put it in a box with another medical type thing but when I opened it in the caravan the retainer wasnt there. Maybe I put it somewhere else. Searched the caravan from top to bottom before we left. Searched the car, roof box, luggage. I didn't see it all holiday, halfway through I remembered to wear it then couldn't find it. I have an appointment to replace (starting from scratch unfortuntely) next week, but my teeth have already moved out of place so I really want to find the original besides the cost. Please help!

Surely you'd remember sleeping with it, or not?

No I definitely didn't use it on holiday. I'm not great for wearing it every night so about 2 days in I started looking for it

But if your teeth have already moved out of shape, what's the point of finding the old one?

I don't think they've moved so much that I wouldnt be able to fit it on

Well then I would be looking under the bed, down the back of the bed, under your bedside table, behind your bedside table, etc.

Not that I can think of, maybe my dead herb collection in the kitchen window. Will check window again.

I thought I’d left a (quite expensive, 50th birthday gift from DH) watch in a holiday cottage. Turned out I hadn’t actually taken it, and eventually found it behind a photo frame on top of the piano.

CapitalAtRisk · 30/05/2025 11:58

I thought I had left my watch at a hotel I stayed in, which then closed down.

Two years later, I found it down the side of my car seat! I remember that I had swapped watches before an event.

Did you drive to the holiday OP?

The problem with retainers is that they are clear and blend in to the surface you place them on.
Usually they end up in a tissue or napkin and are binned. Alternatively the bed or the dog are the usual culprits. Dogs live chewing retainers.Ours has destroyed a couple of my sons mouth guards. He keeps them in his rugby boots and the dog loves pinching she’s.

I’m a dentist so this is a perennial problem.
It would be great if they made them in different colours. You can get the softer bite guards in all sorts of colours but they are not suitable for retention.

Alternatively a custom acrylic version could be made in a different colour. You can get patterned retainers in the USA but not sure if they are available in the uk.

Yep, very easy to lose. No indoor pets so can't blame a dog.

Oh they’re amazing. They use ultrasonic waves to keep retainers immaculately clean.
Get one for your new set! x

Mine always ends up in my wardrobe, by the kettle, bedside drawer or jeans pocket. Basically anywhere where I might go to eat or drink something and have forgotten i put it in.

Did you have it in at any point for bed and get distracted, like remembering you have to put the bins out, or a neighbour spoke to you while you were wearing it and put the bins out so you took it out and set it down before talking? Or maybe a child needed you in the night so you tok it our while soothing them?

I normally keep it in the toothbrush mug in the downstairs bathroom. The box broke so it was just loose.
I was in the kitchen when I thought I put it in the box. Cleaned all the kitchen sides. Other thing in the box (lovely nasal steamer) kept in medicine cupboard, Need to empty it out again. Think I packed the box in just a tesco bag with some random things. Searched through all the tesco bags and the car

Have you checked in and around the toothbrush mug?
