Cannabis should not be decriminalised - AIBU?

Alwaysoneoddsock · 28/05/2025 17:57

I hate the smell of cannabis. It’s becoming the norm to smell it. I think decriminalising this drug will make it more prolific.
It is a gateway drug.
It does not help mental health (in fact it worsens it).
People driving under the influence of cannabis is a real issue.
AIBU to say it should not be decriminalised?

That’s a point - it will disproportionately impact certain areas (probably poorer)!

Yeah it wont be the middle class do gooders who have to put up with the smell from their neighbours.

bombastix · 28/05/2025 20:36

Will no one think of the babies!!!

WilfredsPies · 28/05/2025 20:36

NeelyOHara · 28/05/2025 20:31

Exactly, it would bring in huge amounts of money and stop county lines too.

I don’t think it will stop county lines. They’ll just sell other drugs instead.

Please name these areas with baby choking cannabis fogs

Would you like to pop round to mine for a cup of tea?

Now that it’s warmer, I can’t have my windows open unless I want a pounding head and everything stinking of weed. And it will be like this 24 hours a day until my neighbours decide to go indoors and shut their doors and windows.

But quite seriously, where is this? You may have wastrel neighbours, of course

Georgewilldo911 · 28/05/2025 20:41

The only anti social resident on out block of six flats smokes weed , stinks the stairwell and flats out and will no doubt cost me thousands when I sell.
Don’t make this legal.

Do pp want this? Maybe they do. I’m a no

YANBU. It's repulsive. Tougher punishments are needed, not legalization.

I’m not giving you my address, but it’s your average rough council estate in the south east.

Wastrels? Not what I call them, but yes, I do. It’s unpleasant enough with weed. There’s a reason it’s called skunk!

bombastix · 28/05/2025 20:44

I am serious actually. I don’t live in an area which is consumed by cannabis smokers (locals like too much beer and I think coke to judge from the rapidity of conversation) I am curious about these claims

Good luck. Since 1971 when harsh laws were imposed, usage has gone up year on year every year. Make it a health issue and things would change, I feel

People with good motivation do not get off their faces on drugs illegal or otherwise all the time - people who have little to do, do

I don’t want to be an elevenerife, but count yourself lucky you’ve only got one; I’m surrounded by the fuckers. None of them work, so the lot that sleep through the night are smoking it all day, the ones who sleep through the day are smoking it all night and it is a permanent smell in the summer.

I bloody love winter, when they’re all shut up in their houses and I can have the windows open without needing paracetamol, chocolate biscuits and a bucket load of febreze.

I’m surprised people are not aware of this.

Yes it will. We lived in a fancy commuter town in the south east (gentrified well after we moved in) and during the last few years we lived there (late 2010s) our garden in summer smelt like the Glastonbury festival. The problem is that people can abuse drugs with impunity. There's not even a stigma any more.

Tougher punishments plus enforcement, I should have said. It's the latter that's lacking. If the police won't even investigate burglaries, they aren't likely to care that your neighbour is having a spliff by the fence and making your garden unusable. I understand that drug pollution is not a top priority for law enforcement, but it has a huge impact on quality of life.

bombastix · 28/05/2025 20:58

Even when enforcement got you prison, it didn’t get any better. The use of cannabis has gone up year on year since we criminalised it harshly.

I think some of here are annoyed more than they cannot call the police on the neighbours, which you can. You just need to have the courage of your convictions

Digdongdoo · 28/05/2025 20:59

WilfredsPies · 28/05/2025 20:34

😂 This suggestion has always made me chuckle. It’s so simplistic.

Do you think the criminals supplying it on an industrial scale are just going to wave goodbye to that income? Or register with HMRC to start paying taxes? Not forgetting wages and NI contributions for the people they’ve trafficked into the UK and imprisoned in cannabis farms to keep the crop going?

No. Of course they won’t. They’ll either start selling skunk instead of your garden variety weed, which will set off a mental health crisis that will dwarf the obesity crisis, or they’ll diversify into other drugs and get their street dealers to start encouraging their former weed customers into taking a little pill to try, or sprinkling a freebie in with their next smoke. And even if they did carry on growing normal weed, who is going to pay full price for it if Lee at Number 32 can supply it cheaper?

I didn't suggest it would end crime did I? But if people are buying it and smoking it, we might as control at least some of what they're smoking and make some money off of it. That criminals might diversity isn't a reason not to legalise and regulate.

Well I’m afraid the invite for tea was rhetorical (is that the right word? 🤔) but just find a rough council estate and walk through it. You’ll want to find the houses where they’re all sat outside in their front gardens, someone has their car radio playing shit music at full volume, there are a couple of topless twenty year olds riding round on stolen push bikes looking like they’re deciding whether or not to mug you and you can hear at least one argument. You’ll smell it.

I mix with people from some quite well to do backgrounds through work, and it strikes me that the people who want it legalised are more often than not the sort of people who don’t live next door to the people selling it. It’s bad. Legalising it would make it a lot worse.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 28/05/2025 21:01

We don't have enough police or resources to deal with cannabis. It can trigger lots of mental health issues and we don't have the resources to deal with those either.

No we shouldn't. Not everything that makes money is good for society as a whole. Surprised a labour politician has suggested it. I thought they were the ones who were more about society and less about the individual and the market.

Who’s going to buy it in a shop when it’s more expensive than where they’re getting it now? 😂

anotherside · 28/05/2025 21:03

Social media usage can cause serious mental health issues. Should we ban it?

Same reason most people aren't buying dodgy Vodka someone made in their cellar probably.

Another point worth mentioning is that the rate of lung cancer is much higher in cannabis smokers than in cigarette smokers.

The rate of death from asthma attacks is also higher in cannabis smokers than in cigarette smokers.

Legalization of cannabis would result in an increase in lung cancer which has been declining. Plus an increase in tobacco smoking.
