Booked 3 night stay through booking.com in a flat in rural location. I think heating is provided by Wood burning stove at the ground floor of the building, we are in the 1st floor, and it's midnight here and all I can smell is smoke. It's obviously old smoke smell, not fresh, airing room before sleep didn't help. Wibu to message owner in the morning and say me and my kids can't stay here for another 2 nights?

It's up to you as long as you don't expect a refund?

KrisAkabusi · 27/05/2025 22:49

It's just a smell you're not used to. It's not harmful. You'll probably get used to it. There's no way you should expect a refund.

We would have to leave because wood burner’s always used to set of our son’s asthma.

Agree, @Menopausalmum43 but it’s from the wood burner’s, not cigarette smoke.

It is actually harmful smoke leaves a residue on things https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/quit-smoking/expert-answers/third-hand-smoke/faq-20057791.

I wouldn't want to stay in a flat that reeked of fag smoke. Fuckin grim 😫

It’s not cigarette
smoke?

What does this have to do with a wood burner?

Justchillinhere · 27/05/2025 23:02

You can just message them on the way out, Thanks we're cutting our holiday short, not obligatory but you can add the wood burner had a lingering smoke smell!!

Goingoutofmymind25 · 28/05/2025 05:12

To be honest I would expect a refund, as we can't stay in an apartment with such strong smell of smoke

Just to clarify, the wood burner is not inside the let, and wasn't advertised as coming with wood burner

If a refund isn't offered, would you stay? If you would then it's not that bad and you're being grabby over a smell you're not used to. If you'd leave anyway then leave and see if you can get some money back but don't hold your breath...

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/05/2025 06:49

I wouldn't expect a refund for something the owner has no control over. Presumably they don't control who uses the wood burner.

monkeysox · 28/05/2025 07:33

I agree. I'd ask for a refund.

DaveWatts · 28/05/2025 07:36

I love a woodburner but a strong smell of smoke is very unpleasant, especially if you weren't warned about it and the stove isn't even in your apartment so not something you can control! And if you can smell the smoke it's probably an older burner which is much more harmful in terms of emissions. I would be asking for a refund the same way I would for any strong smell - drains, dog etc.
