Over 50s. Have you outgrown/got bored of anything?

Mine is spas or spa days. I used to love them. Went to one recently and was so bored.

Dh and I camped (tent) recently and the place was so peaceful and beautiful I realised I enjoyed this much more than spa days or stays. The weather was good admittedly. But even so walking in the beautiful dales was so therapeutic. Also the wild swimming under waterfalls was blissful. Dh and I often camp but have found the best site. Cost less than £60 Inc electric hook up. First time we've used electric.

Dh and I walk lots. Loads of long distance walking. I also walk with friends. So it isn't a new realisation that I love the outdoors. Just a sudden realisation that spa days bore me now.

Have you outgrown anything? Or found a new love of something?

@Arraminta How do you find out what the cutlery is like though before booking?

I always have to try and get the best of the best (budget allowing). I think I read an article about it actually and it’s called maximalism or something.
However I did go away last year with friends with very different budgets to a city known for being dirty - our accommodation was GRIM, there were rats and rubbish everywhere and every breath was 90% Vespa fumes and 10% fag smoke and we ate on street corners and drank €1 Aperols from trucks - and I loved it!!! I felt really alive and in the thick of it and it took me right back to my backpacking days!
I am not in a hurry to repeat but it was actually really really fun.

Edited

I'm really particular about the sites I book with. My favourite is Unique Home Stays, they get it absolutely right, in my opinion.

Oh and planning + cooking family meals - I cannot wait until free of this (when an empty nester)!!!!!

They go and they come back - still it was a nice few years when they were at Uni.

I second unique home stays. They really are the best, I have never been disappointed in the quality, style and locations. I want to live in one of their cottages permanently!!

Feetinthegrass · 10/06/2025 07:49

Can I add to the crockery and cutlery - with bed linens that are crisp Egyptian cotton. There isn’t a price on comfort post fifty.

Feetinthegrass · 10/06/2025 07:51

I have to confess quietly that we are selling our house, and my only stipulation is a UHS downsize with a stream at the bottom of the garden.

I’ve recently realised I’ve outgrown working for a living.

I’m at both extremes on places to stay. I’m happy somewhere cheap and cheerful as long as it’s clean (on trips where the accommodation isn’t part of the reason for going). I’m also very happy somewhere ultra high end where everything is perfect.

What I cannot stand is somewhere in the middle- paying for a pleasant experience and it just being a bit shit and less nice than my house despite the place having pretensions to luxury. I’d put 95% of British country house hotels in this class.

There's a place called Westgate manor in Weardale that is amazing. Not exactly in the middle of nowhere as there is a pub in the village. But it's a total get away from it all and luxurious. There was a famous and current 80s singer there when we last went. That was years ago but you've just reminded me of it. So dh and I are going back. It isn't cheap but worth it.

We still like camping though. But also some luxury.

I'm not so fussy about the bed linen but do need feather pillows and duvet at home.

I agree they are the best at what they do. My cousin used to rent out one of her houses through them and they're incredibly strict on their criteria. Literally everything is vetted.

Oh I hear you. We'll downsize in about 3 years and it will most definitely be small but perfect. Hadn't considered the stream at the bottom of the garden, but adding that to the spec'.

Topplantpot · 10/06/2025 10:14

Unique homestays look fabulous - but I need a little pub within 5 mins walk, there's no filter for that. But I'm right there with you on quality of bed linen - you pay a fortune to stay in an Airbnb and sleep on a lumpy polycotton pillow on a sheet that doesn't even fit the bed.

Yes. I like to use good quality crockery and cutlery.

So would you leave the accomodation and ditch your holiday if the cutlery wasn't up to your standard?

Notgonnalieaboutthis · 10/06/2025 10:41

Sounds great @Arraminta I would love to stay in a place like this. No compromise on comfort and very peaceful.

No, because if it wasn't good quality then I wouldn't have booked it in the first place. I only book through a couple of trusted sites where the quality is guaranteed.

What other sites do you use? I could do with more lux in my life!

Katiesaidthat · 10/06/2025 14:20

Shopping, I used to love it. Gooing up to London with my mum and aunt or the huge department store where we lived. Now I just find the clothes and walking around from shop to shop so tedious. I enjoy buying stuff for my daughter, but that´s it. I went all over the place and loved flying, can´t think of anything worse than being obliged to visit an airport now. I use the high speed trains and stay national.

So very limited holidays then? Fair enough if you want to restrict yourself in that way

Yes, holidaying all over the world in very good quality accommodation is awfully restrictive. Oh no wait....

Yep. Unless you're lucky enough to really love your job, at a certain post-menopausal point you kind of wake up, take a look round and think, why the hell am I still doing this? Do I enjoy it that much? and then you remember why 🙄If you're lucky you can restructure your work in some way that makes more time for things you do enjoy. I'd done that and was pretty happy with how it worked out - basically wfh 9-1 every day with the occasional full day - but then my employer was bought by a multinational which added not only 20 layers of bureaucracy to everything but many more working hours per week and more 'work bleed' per day - work with the Europeans early in the morning, finish with everything around the time the Americans start coming online and wanting things. Great for the wallet, not so great for the stealth retirement.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/06/2025 11:39

Totally agree about the country house hotels. I like properly nice or the premier inn will do

Fetchthevet · 15/06/2025 14:55

Life in general I'm afraid. Just can't see the point.
