Over 50s. Have you outgrown/got bored of anything?

Mine is spas or spa days. I used to love them. Went to one recently and was so bored.

Dh and I camped (tent) recently and the place was so peaceful and beautiful I realised I enjoyed this much more than spa days or stays. The weather was good admittedly. But even so walking in the beautiful dales was so therapeutic. Also the wild swimming under waterfalls was blissful. Dh and I often camp but have found the best site. Cost less than £60 Inc electric hook up. First time we've used electric.

Dh and I walk lots. Loads of long distance walking. I also walk with friends. So it isn't a new realisation that I love the outdoors. Just a sudden realisation that spa days bore me now.

Have you outgrown anything? Or found a new love of something?

I have to say though I have a very keen interest in clothes. I’ve bought 2 dresses within the space of 4 days. I’m trying new face creams and make-up. I also use a good hairdresser.

Why would I? I have much better access to those in France. But do tell, precisely what "perks" are you talking about? In your list you needn't bother to include the excessive pollution from the water companies, the excessive price of electricity, the dreadful roads or the inadequate police, but I'd love to hear about the other perks. 😉

France has free healthcare? Since when? Last time I checked the roads are paid for using tolls, that’s why they are empty.

And many of the villages are so dull and lifeless there is more excitement to be had in a morgue.

Paris has declined to a rat infested crime riddled hell hole. Maybe that is fun for you, but where we live it is absolutely beautiful in June with the endless sunny days and wild flowers. Your loss, my friend.

About that list of benefits, can we expect it sometime today? BTW, I'm not your friend, I don't know you from Adam. I sense you know little about France but do tell, have you ever lived there?

Much of the French health system is completely free. I do have to pay when I book an appointment to see the doctor. Funnily enough, when I attend, I get it back. If I fail to attend, I loose it. Great idea that perhaps we should introduce in UK.

You're wrong again about tolls. Yes, there are some but you don't have to use them, there are plenty of other roads (little or no congestion) that one can use.

Paris is not dissimilar to London in many respects other than it is actually cleaner, less traffic and you're less likely to have your phone nicked!
Anyhow, much looking forward to the list of benefits. Have a lovely day.

If you enjoyed it so much I doubt you would feel the need to put down other people’s countries….

You sound a delight, France is most welcome to keep your sneering, cynical contribution to life.

Oh dear, how angry you must be. Actually, I'm putting down my own country, which I am absolutely entitled to do. Anyway, have a nice day.

I no longer want to entertain in my home - a cup of tea is fine, but no more dinner parties or overnight stays - it's too much effort, and everyone I know can afford hotels and restaurants.
I don't like noisy bars anymore. Can't deal with chaotic people and their chaotic lifestyles and have a strong need to have a tidy house. It brings me peace.
I've developed a keen interest in gardening - it'll need to be ordered, though.😁

I have always enjoyed a house full of friends and family, dc’s friends too and we have lots of dinner parties and always have done.

I’m now feeling more inclined to have lunches rather than suppers, and enjoy the summer because it’s all in the garden and it’s less of a flaff. The children like swimming and the salads are easy to throw together and no one (over)stays until 2am.
I have given up entirely on overnight guests too, I can’t bear the small talk required in the mornings. Radio 4 and my dog is as much as I can bear these days.

Shopping. I just can't be arsed anymore. I used to love spending days clothes shopping, bags and shoes shopping, shopping for the home etc. Now i just think if I don't need it, I'll never go looking and always buying like I used to.

Like yourself though, walking and being in the great outdoors is my pleasure since turning 50. Early nights and books too!

I've never really enjoyed shopping as in wandering around shopping centres for clothes. I enjoy it even less now. Never understood why people enjoyed it and why the need for so many clothes and shoes. Watching those sort your life out shows, with the amount of money wasted on things.

beguilingeyes · 05/06/2025 09:09

Oh yes, standing up at gigs. I'm ok if I've got something to lean on but it's just pain. Give me a seat, so at least I can stand if I want to but there's no crush.

Topplantpot · 05/06/2025 09:21

I am peak stuff - I don't buy for the sake of something new. I shop (usually online) for whatever I need, but shopping as an activity is my idea of hell and I get more anti-shopping the older I get. We have gone on holidays with friends who seem to enjoy spending their days looking at tatt and expecting me to get equally excited.

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/06/2025 09:32

The walking and outdoor stuff is what I have always done @JumpingDizzy. We Motorhome though as I do not like actual camping but I have never paid £60 for a site. Stayed in a great one recently and it was £25 per night inc EHU and facilities.

I have almost stopped alcohol completely, not teetotal but close and also no nightclubbing now. I did waltz on a train platform at the weekend though at a vintage event. I just prefer things overall being a little gentler and quieter. I prefer going out in the day. It’s our wedding anniversary this week and we will go out for pre theatre supper as it’s cheaper and like to be back early,

Yes. It was my 40th birthday present! A decade on it was a good investment with teen dc. The warm water feels really healthy and we use it on Christmas Day as a family ritual 🤪 last one in kind of thing!

The thing I have noticed about being 50+ is the increase in confidence. I didn’t expect it. My mother hated being older, she is a very beautiful woman and couldn’t bear the signs of aging. I see aging qualities as artistic rather than sad, it makes a face interesting. You can see the history, the life and the spirit of someone as they age.

So I dreaded without knowing why the idea of being 50, and then I realised how liberating it felt which is far more fun than being beautiful! Like a slightly giddy feeling of freedom. Being completely yourself, and with dc growing up having more time to explore the world, interests and development.

I started studying something brand new, and it gave me such an invigorating lease of life, even if my essays were all over the place at the beginning.

It was 58 for 2 nights.

I'd like a campervan. Not a big motor home though.

I don't know about 'outgrown', but I have very suddenly realised I don't care if I never hear the Beatles again.

I grew up in the 70s, just remembering the tail-end of the Beatles' fame, and over the years I've loved listening to their music - mainly the raw, really authentic early stuff before George Martin got his hands on them - before Sgt Pepper!

I couldn't get enough of documentaries and books about their story. And very recently I suddenly realised that my interest had run its course. Very strange and rather sad, really.

I don't know whether it's anything to do with Macca hanging around well past his sell-by date. It might be. I like to think of them in their heyday, all young men doing something different and fresh. But Paul just doesn't seem to know when to stop and seeing him as an old man with a doddery voice has spoiled the story for me.

Getting up at stupid o'clock to catch a flight, so spending the first 48 hours of the holiday feeling shattered. Nope! Refuse to do it nowadays. I'm only prepared to fly during office hours and if flying before lunch, always stay the night before at the airport.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/06/2025 13:45

@Arraminta I hear you and our holidays are planned accordingly - even if it means we pay and fly from Heathrow 80 minutes away rather than Bristol airport40 minutes away

BIossomtoes · 05/06/2025 14:48

I wish ours were! My bloke sees nothing wrong with a 6am take off and I was foolish enough to allow him to book our next holiday. 😱

Spooky2000 · 05/06/2025 15:04

People. People piss me off in general. I stay in a lot more often and listen to the radio or read/cook. If I go out it's with A friend, not more than one.

Is this a new thing or did you always feel like this?

Oh now I quite enjoy a 6am wine at the airport bar 😂

Definitely clothes shopping! So dull - but shopping for books or art is fine.

I don't think I ever really liked spa days - such fussiness - but needed to get to 50+ to be happy to admit it.

All-female groups (certainly of more than 4 or 5 good friends) - too much bitching and cattiness. Mixed groups are much better.

TV news - stopped watching at the start of the pandemic, coz it is so dumbed down and "tabloid". I get all the news I need from Radio 4 and newspapers.

Most TV programmes, in fact - no soaps, no reality TV. But I wished the BBC hadn't ditched most of its arts programmes.

ALL of this! Especially TV news, which I gave up in 2016 and nearly break my neck to turn over if it comes on when I'm not paying attention.

Similarly, I gave up buying newspapers quite a few years ago. I used to enjoy the Sunday Times but life's too short now to dedicate the best part of a day to a feckin' paper.

Perfectly acceptable. I no longer put up with inconvenient or unsociable hours travelling. Why start your holiday in such a crap way?

TreeDudette · 05/06/2025 16:56

Driking / clubbing / pubbing. Was never a huge part of my life but now is not there at all. I like the odd cocktail maybe once a month with a meal out but other than that I am happy to be sober and not sleepy or headachy!
