Over 50s. Have you outgrown/got bored of anything?

Mine is spas or spa days. I used to love them. Went to one recently and was so bored.

Dh and I camped (tent) recently and the place was so peaceful and beautiful I realised I enjoyed this much more than spa days or stays. The weather was good admittedly. But even so walking in the beautiful dales was so therapeutic. Also the wild swimming under waterfalls was blissful. Dh and I often camp but have found the best site. Cost less than £60 Inc electric hook up. First time we've used electric.

Dh and I walk lots. Loads of long distance walking. I also walk with friends. So it isn't a new realisation that I love the outdoors. Just a sudden realisation that spa days bore me now.

Have you outgrown anything? Or found a new love of something?

Going dancing at night. Locally to.me I've seen a daytime disco advertised 2 till 6. Says u can get home on time for Strictly 😂. Don't watch it, but thinking of giving the disco a go if I can work out what to wear😆

ohime · 02/06/2025 06:59

Being obsessed with shoes. Now I seem to think like a man: 'But I already have a pair of shoes'.

There's always one of them on near me. My friend went to one on Saturday by herself. She wore comfy shoes.

Surely this is to do with our actual dna/hormones. When young (and fertile) adult human females need to find a mate - so must invest resources (time money energy) towards that goal which gives the feeling of “enjoyment” when that drive is being fulfilled. So body maintenance, shopping for clothes and high heels, make up, are part of that drive. Going out a lot is “mate hunting”. Anything that is t about achieving that fundamental drive to reproduce, is “boring”.

at 50 purely from a Darwinian perspective, we no longer need to attract a mate, but need to safely survive into old age (primarily to be there to support our genes (our DC and DGC) survival. So our “pleasures” change accordingly.

@insomniaclife thanks for your input.

dunno about that. I agree that it might well be a social construct stemming from when dances and social activities were arranged to ensure that girls met the "right" people....in all classes, not just the richer ones.

zingally · 02/06/2025 11:04

Alcohol.

I've never been a huge drinker, but since turning about 35, I just slowly lost interest more and more.
I'm happy to have a fun cocktail when on holiday, the more elaborate and silly-looking, the better. But the casual drinking at home? Not interested.
Nowadays, the number of alcoholic drinks I have in a year is probably somewhere between 5 and 10. But probably closer to 5.

I am talking about the genetic level, the urge fundamental to all living creatures to procreate. I’m not talking about any aspect of society but our genetic imperative

kerstina · 02/06/2025 13:18

I see my interest in make up and clothes as the chance to be creative . I love nice clothes in colours that suit me . I still enjoying discovering new make up and perfume . I am past 50 so not always about hormones. I still want to look nice for myself and my husband . What do the others who also still enjoy shopping for clothes, make up and perfume think? I could easily never go to the hairdressers again though as find it such an ordeal.

Coffeeishot · 02/06/2025 13:33

I'm.not particularly fashionable or adventurous with clothes but I do like make up if I'm going out, I follow a few make up artists for "mature skin" on sm and they have great tips.

beguilingeyes · 02/06/2025 15:20

During the Pandemic I started cutting my own hair. It's dead straight and not thick so not too difficult. Now I wonder what I spent all that money on for years.

jeaux90 · 02/06/2025 15:50

Under wired bras. I refuse to be tortured by them anymore.

JumpingDizzy · 02/06/2025 16:42

I know lots off very glam over 50s. Myself included. I don't wear as much make up as when younger. To be honest my skin is better nowadays.
Met a woman today breath-takingly stunning. She was definitely 50 plus.

Germaine Greer wrote very persuasively about that in 'The Change'.

I actually got massively into perfume during perimenopause - not sure if my sense of smell changed or something. Fortunately now that I basically know what I like, that hobby got a bit cheaper ;)

Yes you are right ! I went completely off some perfumes in my collection like black opium and la vie est belle 🤮 although some still survived my collection like hypnotic poison .

JumpingDizzy · 03/06/2025 11:21

My sense of smell is heightened now.

Mine too! And it's horrible; you really don't want a high-functioning sense of smell in most situations.

A friend I know is 72 and desperately dating. I really couldn't be arsed if anything happens to dh. He's a one off. Too many creeps out there.

During the pandemic I started cutting my own hair as well. While I've saved a fortune and would be reluctant to restart the cycle of salon trips every few months, unfortunately I have curly/wavy hair so no matter how many how-to videos I watch, I've never managed to give myself a good haircut; instead it ranges from 'passable if not observed closely' to 'probably insane, move away'. When I was young a bad haircut would leave me sobbing in the loo and then rushing the next day to a different hairdresser to get it fixed; these days my solution to the problem has been to cultivate a new obsession: hats. 😎

I've got bored and completely fed up with the UK so I spend as much time as possible with my partner away from it. It's just become a grubby little country where everything is just a ripoff. France and Italy are my favourite places where good, high-quality food, space and people-focussed services seem to be the order of the day. My only attraction to UK is seeing children and grandchildren.

No doubt you will be back for your free hip replacements and winter fuel allowances and free prescriptions and all the other perks.

Why would I? I have much better access to those in France. But do tell, precisely what "perks" are you talking about? In your list you needn't bother to include the excessive pollution from the water companies, the excessive price of electricity, the dreadful roads or the inadequate police, but I'd love to hear about the other perks. 😉

Standing up at gigs, I really need to sit down or not go.
Late nights in crowded pubs ( or quiet pubs for that matter.) I need to be home and in bed now!
Heels. If I’m doing even the shortest of walks I need comfortable shoes.
Crowds, I prefer peace and quiet.
