To start a hobbies thread....

I had a look and couldn't find anything so thought I'd start one!

Maybe we can ask MNHQ to move it once it gets some traction...

I just thought it would be nice to have a place where we talk about our hobbies and what we've done on our hobbies that day...

As full on as mum life is, I never value the time on my hobbies properly and I'm sure there's plenty of other out there who could do with a bit of a sharing space also...

I looked on there but it's a general question topic.

Was hoping for a space to share together.

Plus hobbies could be more than arts and crafts like gardening or building things...

I'm an embryonic gardener. Never been interested but am starting out with a few pots, a herb planter and potatoes in bags.
Also, martial arts. I absolutely love this. I gave up team sports due to my age and being unable to keep up but now gave a new focus.
I want to learn to crochet but struggling atm. You Tube makes it look easy.

I like to see.....when I get time and energy and the same time!

Are you new to Mumsnet? Hobbies are what the menfolk do to avoid family responsibilities.

I'm happy to partake in a hobbies board / thread. I know there's a lot on the arts and crafts board, but some of mine don't fit in that category. My hobbies mostly include making candles, cooking; including pickling and preserving, birding, reading, shopping, gardening, stargazing, plane spotting (Flight Radar 24) and writing - lists mainly, but sometimes more meaningful stuff. Oh and hoarding collecting things; stationery, candles, vintage bits and bobs, antiques, etc. I also have a smashing vinted addiction and am more than happy to share my bargains if anyone is interested.

whatdoidonowffs · 26/05/2025 21:38

That would be far to outing 😂😂

A hobby is often so "very outing" it's only referred as "a hobby" in hush tone

BloodandGlitter · 26/05/2025 22:02

My hobby is collecting hobbies and hobby related supplies Grin Everyone in the family knows if they need some obscure random thing to come and ask me and I'll either have it or provide a solution.

Is it just me that wishes the OP's would tell us what these hobbies were?

Ha! Me too! I dabble with pyrography, enamels, crochet and crossstitch. But over the years I’ve tried/collected materials for many others.

Confusedmeanderings · 26/05/2025 22:40

I'm just learning to crochet @wastingtimeonhere ! I tried a book first of all and didn't get anywhere. Then I looked at a few YouTube videos and still struggled. I live in a small village and so I posted on the village website asking if there was anyone who could teach me. From that grew a monthly craft club. We meet in the local pub and bring along projects we're working on. It doesn't have to be crochet. If you like the look of what someone is doing, they will teach you. It's been great. I've combined what I've learned at the club with YouTube, especially videos by BellaCoco. We've only been meeting since February, and I can now crochet squares, poppies (we yarnbombed our postbox for VE day) and now I'm crocheting a trauma teddy bear. Maybe there's a group near you?

MyNamedoesntWork · 26/05/2025 22:43

I do silversmithing & enamelling, cooking, gardening and looking forward to retiring!

MyNamedoesntWork · 26/05/2025 22:44

I also am lead to believe that women who afire lots of crafting materials and tools live longer than the husbands who mention it 🤣

Labiabella · 26/05/2025 23:18

I fly small planes. That's my hobby 😄. It's why I never have any money.

Welikebeingcosy · 27/05/2025 11:05

I love all of these! I did write the following post but it didn't upload for some reason....

I'm trying to work on my hobbies of languages and am new to growing plants. I've got an allotment but keep putting off going there because of housework. I want to be inspired by the menfolk who can shut off from it all.

I want to get back into some old hobbies of painting with watercolours, reading, writing and improv but I'll have to find an online group for the improv because of childcare.

I'd love to make candles...and soaps and things like that....I remember doing a candle making kit as a child and it was very satisfying...there used to be a shop in my nearest city which was dedicated to just the candle wax beads etc and it was so inspiring.

Oooh, this does become quite outing though…. My hobbies are taking my dog Mantrailing (I try go at least once a fortnight) and learning Latin.

I read a lot (100+ books last year) so that’s another hobby, and I like to play RPG type games (Pokémon, Hogwarts Legacy, Stardew Valley are some faves).

I also dabble in gardening, and quite like yoga and Pilates but struggle to find the time to do that in a structured way. I would love it if I lived close to a hot yoga studio and I’m seriously considering buying a garden sauna to be able to do it at home…

wordywitch · 27/05/2025 11:10

My hobby is eviscerating sexist men online. Does that count? 😄

This is both a hobby and a public service. It most definitely counts!

CalliopePlantain · 27/05/2025 11:14

I game. Hogwarts legacy, elder scrolls, phasmophobia, the sims.

Shoxfordian · 27/05/2025 11:18

I read lots, attend two monthly book clubs - very excited to start new Stephen King book after work, will be completely ignoring husband tonight!

I also game on the switch; currently loving iFantasy life, girl who stole time.

I’m also an avid reader, didn’t think of it as a hobby,
I recently knitted a jumper because I knew what I wanted but couldn’t find it. It’s not a regular thing though. I can crochet but don’t.
I have the equipment to do watercolours but that’s still on my to do list.
im about to start yoga as I’ve just lost a lot of weight and need to firm up a bit.
