To think this was an odd thing to say about my baby’s outfit?

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:30

<indicating my baby> ‘I love her outfit!’

’Thank you!’

’No not yours Darlin’! Hers!’

The baby is 6 months old. I was too polite to point this out but she doesn’t choose or purchase her own clothes.

bridgetreilly · 26/05/2025 11:31

She is complimenting whoever chose the baby’s clothes. She might even be thinking about getting something similar for a baby she knows. Why would you think that’s odd?

FedupofArsenalgame · 26/05/2025 11:31

Have you got too much time to on your hand to even being thinking about this. And no don't think it's weird at all. I often say when I like my GC outfits

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:32

When I said thank you, surely she realised it was because I’d chosen the outfit myself.

OP posts:
softlyfallsthesnow · 26/05/2025 11:33

She was just being lighthearted. Take it as a compliment on your good taste and, doubtless, your lovely baby.

CrowSinger · 26/05/2025 11:34

@NotWantingToBeRude these previous replies are insane. I get it OP, bloody weird thing to say.

PinkDreamer · 26/05/2025 11:34

No it’s odd. The first two posters clearly haven’t read the op properly. It’s totally normal to say thank you when someone compliments your baby’s outfit. I don’t know why you saying thank you led the woman to believe you thought she was talking about your outfit

It was light hearted she obviously knew the baby wasn't picking our her clothes, do you normally take things literally?

Then it should be blindingly obvious it was a joke?

Or do you really think she thinks that 6 month old babies can A.) Hold a conversation about fashion choices, and B.) Buy their own outfits?

TinyTempest · 26/05/2025 11:37

And it's not 'weird' or 'bloody odd' to say lighthearted things.

Mumsnet aside, obviously 🙄

Add 'insane' to that list...Grin

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:39

So shes saying she doesn’t like my outfit. Which is rude.

Oh, that's how you want to take it, is it?

Fill your boots then but your choice doesn't make her odd.

She really wasn't saying that. You have got the wrong end of the stick there.

pinotnow · 26/05/2025 11:42

Unless it was somebody with whom I had a typically 'bantery' relationship her response would irritate me. It's like complimenting with one comment then putting you on the back foot with the other. YANBU op.

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:43

I don’t know this person very well. She’s not someone I would describe as a friend. So it seemed odd to me.

Oh ok this is how it is ! I've no idea if she liked your outfit or not probably just wanted to compliment your baby .

They really are.

Half of me finds it entertaining to read and the other half just leaves me completely puzzled at how some people make it through a normal day.

pinotnow · 26/05/2025 11:46

Oh, just seen your update. I don't think she's saying she doesn't like your outfit. It's more that she wasn't particularly complimenting it. She could have said nothing, or asked where you got it, or said how much she enjoyed picking out clothes for her babies, or whatever, but instead she chose to facetiously misunderstand your 'thank you' as a crappy joke. But her views on your outfit don't come into it.

Yes this is my thought too. It wouldn’t be my style of humour but I can see how there might be some good friends who would joke around with each other like this. I barely know this woman though.

What was I supposed to have said? ‘Yes baby has great taste, doesn’t she?’ I would have felt rude and maybe slightly condescending saying that to someone I barely know.

OP posts:
Surreymum538 · 26/05/2025 11:48

I assume she was joking/trying to have some banter, but unless I knew this person well and they knew me I wouldn’t have said something that could have potentially come across rude like that.

I just don't believe most of what I read on here lately

I'd find it odd but I wouldn't interpret it as rude.
