To think this was an odd thing to say about my baby’s outfit?

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:30

<indicating my baby> ‘I love her outfit!’

’Thank you!’

’No not yours Darlin’! Hers!’

The baby is 6 months old. I was too polite to point this out but she doesn’t choose or purchase her own clothes.

Yes this is my thought too. It wouldn’t be my style of humour but I can see how there might be some good friends who would joke around with each other like this. I barely know this woman though.

What was I supposed to have said? ‘Yes baby has great taste, doesn’t she?’ I would have felt rude and maybe slightly condescending saying that to someone I barely know.

you were supposed to say exactly what you said. That enabled the joke.

Don’t worry about it op. They weren’t correcting you in a serious way.

Coffeeishot · 26/05/2025 11:53

I mean it's perfectly normal to have a light hearted exchange with a stranger I don't understand the over analysis of this.

pinotnow · 26/05/2025 11:54

It's a boring sort of joke where you have to just give a weak laugh unless you're a lot wittier than I am. I wouldn't like the 'darling' if it was someone I didn't know well, either.

I wonder if these everyday bits of connection are being increasingly misunderstood /misinterpreted thanks to our more isolated, screen based lifestyles.
Sometimes people say things clumsily, jokes land like a stone etc and we move on. Or we should.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/05/2025 12:00

That is weird. Like she expects the baby to respond? Obviously if someone compliments a person's baby then the person says thank you.

Both on behalf of the baby and because it looks the way it does because of you. Clearly you dressed them or if they are cute it's genetic?

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:39

So shes saying she doesn’t like my outfit. Which is rude.

Now you’re being ridiculous. Go and find something constructive to do. It was a lighthearted comment, nothing more.

Christ 🙄 it was a joke. Lighten up

CappuccinoChocolate · 26/05/2025 12:05

Probably just miscommunication @NotWantingToBeRude . I read it as the acquaintance possibly thinking you'd misheard and thought they were complimenting your outfit rather than the baby.

People don't get the hidden rules of communication right all the time - you can spend time actively perceiving it as 'weird' or let it pass. I'd tend to forget about it unless there were other flags flying.

ProtectTransRights · 26/05/2025 12:05

I don't know how some people get through the day on here

Actually that sounds plausible, I'm ancient casual social Interactions are normal to me.

The op is still struggling to understand that what the woman said doesn't actually mean anything she she just thought the babies clothes were cute.

KateShugakIsALegend · 26/05/2025 12:16

Sheesh!

Let it go, and be grateful you have enough space in your head to give this evening a first, let alone a second thought.

Me neither, there are some incredibly precious princesses on here and I'm not sure how they'll cope when the wind blows on them.

PinkDreamer · 26/05/2025 11:34

No it’s odd. The first two posters clearly haven’t read the op properly. It’s totally normal to say thank you when someone compliments your baby’s outfit. I don’t know why you saying thank you led the woman to believe you thought she was talking about your outfit

Edited

Exactly!

the level of comprehension on here drops by the day!!

That sums it up. Call me a miserable cow but it's the sort of interaction I can do without however it just calls for some polite fake laughter.

MoistVonL · 26/05/2025 12:26

It was a lighthearted comment about how adorable your baby’s outfit was.

You are really overthinking it, OP.

WonderingWanda · 26/05/2025 12:27

I would put this down to mild miscommunication at her end, she probably thought she was being funny. You obviously knew she meant the babies outfit and rightly took it as a compliment. Wouldn't really have given it much headspace beyond thinking she wasn't very bright.

Oh FFS, you’re being ridiculous. That wasn’t her intention and you’re massively overthinking this.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 26/05/2025 12:28

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:32

When I said thank you, surely she realised it was because I’d chosen the outfit myself.

The outfit could have been a present from someone else

Yeah it's very bizarre here sometimes. Everyone seems offended all the time. Or on other threads "shaking with rage" or a phrase I've seen before "incadescent with rage" 😅

I know some people struggle with social interactions I understand that. But some other threads on here take it to extremes.

As does the level of misery and complete lack of understanding that some people make lighthearted comments to others.

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 12:30

Yeah fair enough. It’s a slow Bank Holiday and I’m stuck under said baby who is fast asleep on me but I really I should be using the time getting my weekly shopping order done…

This was another mum I was standing next to at a preschool birthday party. I‘ve only seen her a handful times before at drop off and smiled. I can’t pretend this exchange endeared me to her. It felt odd and uncomfortable and a bit over familiar. Sorry.

I don’t know this person very well. She’s not someone I would describe as a friend. So it seemed odd to me.

No she isn't she is just making a little light hearted comment.
You shouldn't take everything so seriously.

I would probably have said something like “Haha, yeah, she’s a proper little fashionista, she’s got a much better wardrobe than me” which would have been a jokey response in line with the obviously jokey context of the other woman’s comment. Neither of us would have been offended or patronised because it would be a normal, warm human interaction.

Sorry I added the wrong quote. This was in response to OP saying the person meant she didn't like her clothes.

Coffeeishot · 26/05/2025 12:35

I think this is on you really, the other woman just sounded like she was being friendly and silly, if you didn't like it felt she was over familiar then that's fine but you can't expect others to agree with you to validate your feelings. It was just an exchange it didn't mean anything other than your babies dress is cute.
