To think this was an odd thing to say about my baby’s outfit?

<indicating my baby> ‘I love her outfit!’

’Thank you!’

’No not yours Darlin’! Hers!’

The baby is 6 months old. I was too polite to point this out but she doesn’t choose or purchase her own clothes.

So shes saying she doesn’t like my outfit. Which is rude.

She’s making a joke. Haha

greengreyblue · 26/05/2025 12:38

Also I wouldn't have said thank you, I think I’d have said something like ‘Yes it’s cute isn’t it- it’s from Baby Gap’’ or wherever.

No she isn’t op: she’s trying to make a fuss of your baby.

saveforthat · 26/05/2025 12:46

YABU and quite ridiculous.

5128gap · 26/05/2025 12:52

She was making a joke, based on the fact that normally we say thank you when we are complimented about our clothes, not when other people are. The joke is that she was acting like your baby was the rightful recipient of the compliment. I doubt for a moment she didn't know you'd bought the clothes. A suitable reply would have been 'yes, she has great taste'.

She really isn’t.

CurlewKate · 26/05/2025 13:09

What’s odd about that? Who said it?

I wonder if these everyday bits of connection are being increasingly misunderstood /misinterpreted thanks to our more isolated, screen based lifestyles.
Sometimes people say things clumsily, jokes land like a stone etc and we move on. Or we should.

It might be because people come on here and get every single tiny piece of social interaction they have. Totally banal, nothing interactions that have hundreds of comments. It's absolutely nuts.

itgetsthehoseagain · 26/05/2025 13:38

She was making a joke. Your “thank you” was thanking her for the compliment about your baby’s outfit. She deliberately misunderstood and playfully reacted as if you thought she had complimented your outfit.

I think.

Anyway, it’s quite funny unless you’re determined to overthink it and look for offence.

Well you can’t for sure know that. I’d have interpreted thatbas light hearted banter and have just played along and said something like “yes she’s always upstaging me” lol. The person obviously would know you pick the baby’s outfits.

Also, when there’s a cute baby to smile at, you don’t really notice anything but the baby so I doubt she’d even noted what you were wearing.

Either way, if it were me, I’d have appreciated it that my efforts were noticed and gone on with a smile on my face!

But not ‘odd’ or disrespectful behaviour imho ♥️

Respectfully, maybe take a breath.

Yes this is my thought too. It wouldn’t be my style of humour but I can see how there might be some good friends who would joke around with each other like this. I barely know this woman though.

What was I supposed to have said? ‘Yes baby has great taste, doesn’t she?’ I would have felt rude and maybe slightly condescending saying that to someone I barely know.

How about " thanks I got it from such and such place"

You must be exhausted by the end of the day.

NotWantingToBeRude · 26/05/2025 11:32

When I said thank you, surely she realised it was because I’d chosen the outfit myself.

More likely she thought you’d misheard and she was complimenting your outfit?

after all she’s not expecting a thank you from the baby is she.

not worth wasting the time or energy worrying over anyway.

nomas · 26/05/2025 15:27

I would have replied ‘Well, I chose it, so the compliment is for me, thank you.’

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/05/2025 15:27

bridgetreilly · 26/05/2025 11:31

She is complimenting whoever chose the baby’s clothes. She might even be thinking about getting something similar for a baby she knows. Why would you think that’s odd?

The odd bit is the woman’s second comment, i.e. when she assumed the OP thought it was her own outfit that was being complimented, whereas obviously the OP was saying thank you for the compliment about her baby's outfit.

Unless it was somebody with whom I had a typically 'bantery' relationship her response would irritate me. It's like complimenting with one comment then putting you on the back foot with the other. YANBU op.

Yeah it’s a bit weird. Of course thankyou is for the babies compliment

namechangetheworld · 26/05/2025 16:08

She was clearly trying to be kind with her first comment and lighthearted with her follow up.

You sound utterly humourless.

Ducksinthegardens · 26/05/2025 17:15

sounds like a joke. Like when someone says hello to my dog, and says “hello beautiful” and then clarifies they are talking to the dog….as if I get random strangers on the street greeting me like that 🤣

I’m so pleased it happens to someone else!

GildedRage · 26/05/2025 17:47

you sound like you struggle socially this is simply a lighthearted comment and in the end she likes the outfit!!
whether you bought it, or grandma, or the next door neighbor.
it's a compliment, go back to bed or get help. i'll blame your attitude on covid and lack of socialization.

Hallywally · 26/05/2025 19:11

Trivial miscommunication or a joke. Not worth thinking about as there clearly no malice and ill intent in the exchange.
