To not want to live next to a football stadium?

We’ve found a house that in all ways is perfect for us. In terms of price, close to work, size, minimal work needed - we could happily live with the interior, as it is- so no rush to put our stamp on it. No renovations needed. However, it is very close to a football stadium. My DH is saying if I let that one negative sway my decision, we would be turning down our dream family home and as we have been house hunting for 6 months and have not come close to finding any house that ticks so many of our wants, we would regret not going for this one.
My DH says that whilst there may be some disruption on match days, it’s not going to be every single weekend, and therefore minimal.
Am I really being picky, or would this be an issue for others?? Would you happily live near a football stadium?

How near is near?

right outside

a few streets away?

Coconutter24 · 25/05/2025 22:42

How close is close? Is it next door or a short drive away?

Colts627 · 25/05/2025 22:43

When you say football stadium are we taking 50,000 capacity Premier League ground at the end of the road or a non league ground a mile away?

KabukiNoh · 25/05/2025 22:43

Are we talking Wembley or Winchester City?

ACynicalDad · 25/05/2025 22:44

Will crowds walk down your road? They provide only play at home 25 days a season, is it used for other events often?

rivalsbinge · 25/05/2025 22:44

It’s is depends on where and how big the stadium is.

angelinawasrobbed · 25/05/2025 22:44

Lived near to Crystal Palace 25 years ago. No issues so long as you had your own parking

PurpleThistle7 · 25/05/2025 22:45

Yeah agree more details needed. I wouldn’t want to live near the major stadium in my city as between games and concerts and hordes of drunk people wandering through it would be most weekends but if it’s a local team and you are fans then maybe it’s fine.

BlueMum16 · 25/05/2025 22:47

Defo more information needed.

Premier League, 50000, football and other events? No a chance.

Nataliaa · 25/05/2025 22:48

It’s a championship team, I think that could equate to 20,000 fans maybe! It’s on a long road that leads to the stadium. Can’t see it from the house, because the stadium is on a road off the main one, but it’s like less than 5 mins to walk

minimal disruption every 2 weeks for an otherwise perfect home is a no-brainer for me, i would take it in a heartbeat

and maybe you could join in the fun and get season tickets !

BoiledOrRoastPotatoes · 25/05/2025 22:52

I wouldn’t want to live near a premier league football ground. Football fans don’t have the best reputation. Drunk people wandering down the streets, throwing up in your garden etc. Maybe that wouldn’t happen, but I am not sure I would want to buy a house and find out.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 25/05/2025 22:53

It’s an absolute no from me. Noise and parking issues are reason enough.

My DH is saying if I let that one negative sway my decision, we would be turning down our dream family home
It’s not your dream home if you don’t want to live next to a stadium, is it.

Nataliaa · 25/05/2025 22:55

It is also a team that has a bit of a bad reputation for their fans 🙈 although some
colleagues that support this team, say the reputation is from the 70’s/80’s and very much outdated. It is, according to them, a family club these days with relatively few problems. But I do acknowledge that it’s probably this reputation that is adding to my apprehension!

the same as every decision to buy a house, you have to consider what you can afford.

I don't suppose it would be on anyone's list of "Pros" when looking, but you have to weigh up what your option are.

As a pp has said, there are 23 home league games, and then potentially some additional cup games.
Some people would consider that a reasonable pay off for getting everything else you are looking for in a house. Others would be 'not in a million years'.

Same as people think differently about houses near a railway line or houses on a main road or houses near a pub or near a school or near a takeaway. Some people feel the positives of getting more space in the house / bigger garden / easy commute outweigh what others perceive as an insurmountable negative.

I don't think it is something I'd choose, but what are your other option, 6 months in ?

Longhotsummers · 25/05/2025 22:58

No way, unless you’re happy to have to plan the times you can leave the house/return on match days to avoid the crowds.

AnnaL94 · 25/05/2025 22:58

There was a thread not too long ago of an OP who lived near Anfield stadium. An away fan had parked their car across the OP’s drive and blocked her in when she needed to get out.

Was a great thread as she ended up getting the car towed before the end of the match.

However stuff like that, albeit rare would put me off living near a stadium or events centre.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/05/2025 22:58

How much extra cash could you make by renting out your drive on match days?

Have you ever been to a premier league game? 😂

I’d be over the moon to live next to my stadium and I know someone who lives very close to the (Premier League) stadium of the team they support and they don’t have any major gripes as far as I’m aware.

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/05/2025 23:00

Its a shame season has just finished otherwise you could visit on s match day to see what it is like.

My DD has a class on Saturday afternoons a mile from a Championship stadium and the traffic chaos is intense depending on kick off times. It can take over half an hour to drive 200m.

Which club is it? If it is Championship with a poor reputation then Millwall would be top of the list. Having visited the New Den I’m not sure anyone’s dream home is within walking distance of there!

Hoppyhop1 · 25/05/2025 23:00

I have lived right next to a football stadium. On match days it was permit only on my road and fans did get fined if they parked there (we had to get permits for visitors on match days - which was easy enough to do) some Saturdays the main roads were busy but it didn’t cause us any problems, we knew so we just avoided those times. I’d say honestly if you love everything else, go for it.

P.s we didn’t move because of the stadium and had no problem selling the house. Also I used to rent out our drive on match days and earn a bit of extra cash!

MrBirling · 25/05/2025 23:01

We did buy a house near a football stadium. But the road wasn't on the direct route so no fans walking past the house. Parking was an issue - if you left before kickoff you lost your space until the match was over. But apart from that it was fine.

CornishTiger · 25/05/2025 23:01

Plus consider is it a venue for gigs too?

Spanglemum02 · 25/05/2025 23:01

I grew up nrar a (now demolished) football stadium. If you have your own parking it's not a problem.
