To not want to live next to a football stadium?

We’ve found a house that in all ways is perfect for us. In terms of price, close to work, size, minimal work needed - we could happily live with the interior, as it is- so no rush to put our stamp on it. No renovations needed. However, it is very close to a football stadium. My DH is saying if I let that one negative sway my decision, we would be turning down our dream family home and as we have been house hunting for 6 months and have not come close to finding any house that ticks so many of our wants, we would regret not going for this one.
My DH says that whilst there may be some disruption on match days, it’s not going to be every single weekend, and therefore minimal.
Am I really being picky, or would this be an issue for others?? Would you happily live near a football stadium?

I've lived a few streets away from a stadium and right next to a trainline also by a petrol station all in the same house match days were a bit of a bugger one man decided to block the driveway I argued with him telling him to shift his car (dark car dark night dark street as the light was out) my mom was on her way home and I said she will hit your car he was all oooohhh I'm not bothered it's her insurance I'm parked legally she will have to pay etc etc I said you will have no car left you idiot enjoy the walk home you won't get a taxi tonight stormed in the house he moved it 🤣 but once they were banned from street parking on match days it was fine

And we saw the fireworks displays for free

I rented a flat literally across the road from a premier league stadium for a short while a few years ago whilst I was on a work secondment nearby. It was ok, but I don't think I would have liked to live there permanently primarily because of the noise. As well as matches there were a couple of big concerts on during the time I was there and it really was noisy. The concerts bothered me more than the football actually because they were in the evening and it was late by the time the crowds had dispersed.
Parking wasn't an issue for me as the flats had a private carpark that was barrier controlled but traffic in the locality was terrible on match days or when other events were on and of course public transport was also packed then, so I tended to stay at home and felt a bit trapped. I felt a bit intimidated by the crowds if I went out at particular times. Maybe if I Iived there permanently I'd have become more confident about dealing with that though.
But that was what I imagine is one of the biggest stadiums in the country so is probably a worst case scenario. When I was growing up my aunt lived a couple of streets away from the local 4th division team's stadium and I spent a lot of weekends there but I don't remember it being a problem. If I were you I'd visit the area on a match day to try to get the feel of what it's like and also look and see what other events,if any, get held there. It might not be as bad as you fear but I think you're sensible to have some concerns.

Think of the traffic 🤢

Which club is it? If it is Championship with a poor reputation then Millwall would be top of the list. Having visited the New Den I’m not sure anyone’s dream home is within walking distance of there!

Milwall was my first thought too!!

RobertaFirmino · 25/05/2025 23:46

It'll be fine. Millwall's most hated opponents are West Ham and Leeds Utd. Both PL teams so very unlikely to meet. Don't think they're too keen on Palace either. Just make sure you or DH keep an eye on any cup matches.

TheFormidableMrsC · 25/05/2025 23:48

I have a family member who lives directly opposite to a red North London club ground. On match days they need their parking permits. You can vaguely hear from their back garden but it’s certainly not invasive. I wouldn’t give it any thought at all. It’s honestly not an issue.

40,000?! Wow. I well well off the mark. I actually thought my 20,000 guess was probably too high 🤣

Millwall average attendance is under 20,000. ETA someone beat me to it.

Mrsmouse71 · 25/05/2025 23:52

Find out when they’re playing at home and park outside the house, see what happens

It is Millwall, yes! I know it probably doesn’t seem like the area for anyone’s dream home, but it’s genuinely a really lovely house and nowhere else would be closer to where we both work, although of course we never set out to find a house right on the doorstep of work, we expected and hoped for somewhere a short commute. So this was an unexpected find!

Late dh used to go and watch Milwall sometimes. He wasn't a Millwall fan or even British, he just enjoyed watching sports. He didn't mention any problems.

TheBirdintheCave · 25/05/2025 23:56

@Colts627Haha my first thought was ‘Must be Millwall’ too 😂

cimena · 25/05/2025 23:57

See if you can find out where the road closures are on match days, it’s handy if you’ve got a steward outside your house!

I live by a PL stadium and it’s totally fine, festive even. And you can get a bacon van sarnie on a weekend morning sometimes.

Bluesclues1 · 25/05/2025 23:59

Millwall aside, I don’t think I’d want to live anywhere near South Bermondsey station.. it’s one of the few places in London that I’ve felt really unsafe in. Although, with the big regen plans and the new overground station coming next to the stadium, you could be onto a bit of a money maker.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 26/05/2025 00:02

I grew up near Hampden Park and it was OK because there weren’t that many big match days as it was really only international matches and cup finals. Some horrible person once opened our gate and kicked our dog though :(

However I have a friend who grew up near a large stadium for a club team and it was a pain in the arse he had to move his car on match days he couldn’t even have it parked outside his house. If you had a drive that might be ok though

Rtato · 26/05/2025 00:02

I used to work there. I’ve lived near big football stadiums all my life (north London). I love it. But, Millwall, definitely not.

RustyBear · 26/05/2025 00:05

Millwall were only two points off a play-off place in the season that’s just finished. If they continue that form, they could be in the Premiership in a couple of years.

Hell no then.

SalfordQuays · 26/05/2025 00:07

Stadium capacity is just over 20,000, so there won’t be more than that.
The police generally escort away fans to the station after the game.
The maximum number of away fans is 4000.
I would imagine that most of the home fans will be local and probably not driving.
I’d be happy to live there if the house was what I wanted in all other ways.

whynotwhatknot · 26/05/2025 00:08

depemds really its the away fans that are usually the problem-would they close your road on match days or anything like that? its probably in your budget because noone wants to live there

Matchalattetime · 26/05/2025 00:09

I lived near a stadium in Scotland and it was fine! The road I was on was a cul de sac so not somewhere people would drive through unless they lived there. The match day traffic didn’t affect me. It was about 7 minutes walk from my house and I loved it because the gym there was great! My boyfriend lived near Emirates in Manchester at one point and that was fine too.

steff13 · 26/05/2025 00:10

Charge fans to park on your driveway on game days?

Yes, the regen plans have been one of the positives of this house!

Oh so potentially the under 20k attendance could rise quite dramatically?!

Check the next match time (and note size relative to its other matches), drive down and observe?

That will be August now otherwise o agree

Dangermoo · 26/05/2025 00:14

Having seen Millwall fans in action, I wouldn't touch the house with a bargepole.
