To not want to live next to a football stadium?

We’ve found a house that in all ways is perfect for us. In terms of price, close to work, size, minimal work needed - we could happily live with the interior, as it is- so no rush to put our stamp on it. No renovations needed. However, it is very close to a football stadium. My DH is saying if I let that one negative sway my decision, we would be turning down our dream family home and as we have been house hunting for 6 months and have not come close to finding any house that ticks so many of our wants, we would regret not going for this one.
My DH says that whilst there may be some disruption on match days, it’s not going to be every single weekend, and therefore minimal.
Am I really being picky, or would this be an issue for others?? Would you happily live near a football stadium?

What you needed to do was park on the road on a match day.

Are there any matches left this season now??

Late dh used to go and watch Milwall sometimes. He wasn't a Millwall fan or even British, he just enjoyed watching sports. He didn't mention any problems.

It probably is like my colleagues describe it then. Rarely any problems. But just a pretty notorious reputation that they will likely never shake off completely. Although none of these colleagues actually live right near the stadium. I will see if I can ask any of the potential neighbours.

Oh so potentially the under 20k attendance could rise quite dramatically?!

No because the stadium will only hold so many. The Den’s capacity is 20146 so unless they extend the stadium (unlikely unless they become an established PL team) it will never be a bigger crowd than that.

No, from what I can find online, the football season is over and begins early August. If only we had found this house a month ago 😭

I used to live near a football ground and it was fine. The only inconvenience was gridlock on the roads around the stadium and rammed public transport before and after matches.

Charge fans to park on your driveway on game days?

My brothers friend does that. He registers on one of the parking sites for matches and concerts 😂 Hes got a double drive so can still park hia car and gets an income from the other - genius

That will be August now otherwise o agree

Maybe check Youtube for fan vids

Ok thanks, that is useful to know! Perhaps they will build another stadium somewhere else if they need to expand one day 😅

ACynicalDad · 26/05/2025 00:19

I used to pass Millwall often, good cycle network, can’t see that stadium expanding. I suspect 20k is your limit. Lots of police to handle their crowd.

JasonTindallsTan · 26/05/2025 00:19

I’d start a thread with a clear title requesting Millwall match going fans to contribute and see if you can get a few responses. Might give you a rough idea what to expect.

clary · 26/05/2025 00:19

ahhhh I also thought Millwall when I readyour post about bad rep @Nataliaa

Interesting that everyone says that. Yes it is probably a bit outdated; but my DH who is a massive footy fan and goes to a lot of matches all over the UK, says he went into a pub before a Millwall game once and there was no furniture in it at all, not even tables nailed to the floor, which was a first for him. So I guess that says something.

It wouldn't be my choice to live 5 mins walk from the New Den, ICL. And I agree with a Pp that I would say that would make selling it harder. But what do I know? We live a cricket ball throw away from a secondary school, which is a big no for some people.

I infer btw from your posts about "what I can find online there are no more games" that you are not in any way a footy fan. (men have been at home on a Saturday in my house for three weekends now!) So I would deffo want to witness the football crowds before I bought the house, if only to get an idea of what 20,000 fans is like. Any way you can wait until the season starts again?

Tagyoureit · 26/05/2025 00:21

OK.
But there's been some good suggestions here.

Are you on a main route from the station to the grounds etc are the type of things you need to look at. Does the grounds hold other events like concerts etc.

Some good old fashion research, picking up the phone and even calling their own box office asking about the events they hold off season would really help you.

Good luck

NiceBigCoatRack · 26/05/2025 00:22

Go to a local pub and ask them what it's like on match day. There should be residents around who can give you their experience. Agree that the regeneration means the area is going to be on the up but it may take some time to filter through.

I actually had a look at tik tok, and came across an account of a Millwall fan mum who takes her young daughter to the games. Which obviously didn’t fit the violent hooligan fans I imagined. 🤣

I grew up very near a Scottish Premier League football stadium, never any problems, now I’m back living in the same area, still no problems.

Even this weekend, when the football team had a fantastic win!

This is a good idea actually. There must be some mumsnetters that live in the area.

OP, I do agree with others who have mentioned gridlocked traffic. I suppose you would get used to planning your day around home days?

RadiovTV · 26/05/2025 00:28

Would depend if I could hear it. At least on the telly you can turn it off.

Edited

You’re right, we are totally clueless. I only know they play in the championship, which I thought must be the top league. Which was
wrong! I do personally think we should wait until there is a game there and check it out. Even if that means risking losing out. That way i’m not ruling it out completely and I don’t think that’s being too picky. It’s a compromise. I will consider it once a visit on match day is possible.

Hmmmmm. Millwall fans are renowned for being racist thugs. I’d probably give it swerve, buy outside London if need be.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 26/05/2025 00:44

I’m a football fan, I live near Selhurst park and don’t have any issues (I don’t drive so traffic/parking not an issue for me). However, I would never want to live anywhere near Millwall. They are the worst and most aggressive fans I’ve ever encountered.

angerelle · 26/05/2025 00:45

It's a while since I went to a Millwall game (over 20 years ago), and I always thought if was fine because we walked there from the Deptford side. One game though, we walked our friend from the stadium to South Bermondsey station and it was horrific! I had wondered why there were helicopters hovering over every other Saturday 😂

Good idea to ask specific questions on here though to get up to date opinions. I would think it would depend on which side you are looking at, and whether people parking all over the place is going to be a problem.

jasminocereusbritannicus · 26/05/2025 00:47

I used to live in a house with the street perpendicular to a ( at the time) Premiership ground. You just learn to live round it … it’s not that bad. Not worth giving up a dream home for.

Congrats on your recent trophy. Great result 👏

BMW6 · 26/05/2025 00:59

I live a stones throw from St Mary's stadium (Southampton) and honestly it's no bother really.

Quite enjoy seeing the fans trudge past - you can never tell whether we won or lost cos the Trudge is always the same 😂
