Housing association query

Well aware this will be a fairly divisive post...

We live in a ten year old new build estate and recently the whole new row of HA tenants in our street have really stopped caring for their houses. I'm talking bins left out and rubbish on the front lawns, old motorbike engines strewn about, goalposts (which the kids use regularly in the road in traffic) and just general untidiness.

We're looking to move (for other reasons) and wondered if anyone would buy a new build property these days as there has to be an element of social housing? I'm well aware it isn't all social housing tenants that are like this and it'll be a small minority, but I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced this? Also, if you're a HA tenant yourself and experienced it with neighbours? Just want a general consensus to see if it's just our estate or not...

Again not wanting to offend anyone at all but know this post won't go down well with some, apologies if you are offended either way! Really don't want this to be a them and us thing, I totally understand people who aren't HA also can not look after their property, just wanting a consensus in general. TIA

I think just keep your immediate area tidy and then don't worry. The people who buy these homes (no disrespect intended at all) are usually buy to lets or first time buyers so they won't be as fussy. If that makes sense? Usually investment properties I guess. Sorry I read your whole post wrong.. Having gone back and re read..would it bother me..yeah being honest I think it would. Sorry again x

I don’t really understand what you’re asking? What difference does it make whether it’s a row of housing association tenants not taking care of their homes or a row of people who own their homes not taking care of it?

Deanthebean · 25/05/2025 21:20

Would it matter to you if they all owned their house and they were still scruffy? Or is it only a problem for HA tenants?
Personally I'd feel the same regardless if I to view your property
Shit hole area 😉

Do you live on my street? I’m in a HA flat. The exteriors of the flats haven’t been maintained since I moved here donkeys years ago and a lot of the gardens are a complete mess with cars, mopeds, bikes etc in various states everywhere, bins not brought back, rubbish in gardens . I almost don’t notice it any more and just look after my outside area. I have muslin curtains up so I can’t see the depressing view. My neighbours are fine and we put each others bins back and take care of our outdoor area (concrete not garden). It’s a shitty area and I’ve seen council estates that are very nicely maintained and looked after
