Sitting as a family, watching some kids’ tv before they go to bed. DH doesn’t want to watch so spends the time doom scrolling on his phone with the volume up and watching the news.
I’m not a fan of the kids tv, but it’s a short period of time out of my day, so I deal with it. Competing with the sound of DH’s phone gives me the rage.
I’ve mentioned it several times, and he does turn it down, but I can still hear it.
Am I being precious or is this fucking annoying?

Very rude next time he's watching something he wants to sit their scrolling tiktok at full volume and see if he likes it

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 25/05/2025 19:23

He needs to wear headphones or earbuds. I cannot stand two sources of noise like that and if the kids/you are watching the TV it's really rude. He's teaching them that you just do what you like and to hell with anyone else. Selfish behaviour.

nomas · 25/05/2025 19:24

YANBU, he should at the very least have put some earphones on. Or just read the news instead of watching it.

Does he often check out of famiky life?

dreamingbohemian · 25/05/2025 19:25

That is extremely rude and passive aggressive
I assume you're not forcing him to sit there? Why doesn't he go in another room or use headphones?

UnctuousUnicorns · 25/05/2025 19:26

Headphones or subtitles on the phone or tablet if someone is watching the television in the same room. Or he could go into another room.

mamajong · 25/05/2025 19:27

It is rude and as someone with adhd this gives me massive sensory overload and puts me on edge. We have a rule in our house that in shared spaces I.e the lounge, everyone (kids and adults) should be respectful. This means using headphones if listening to music, having sound off on phone & video games etc or at the very least ask the other occupants before listening out loud. With a big family, things would be chaotic without this respect/rule. Yanbu

My DH used to do this and piss me right off - as if I wanted to be watching The Great Fire of Pontypanddy on a Friday night!

MelodysMomma · 25/05/2025 19:29

This makes me rage! My husband does it too and I tell him to stop. It’s just rude. If he was watching a show and the kids had their iPads full volume it wouldn’t be okay, so why does he think it’s okay to do it?

MyCyanReader · 25/05/2025 19:29

My all means doom scroll in silence if you MUST, but having the volume on is rude!

My DH doom scrolls whilst watching TV at the same time!

User2676 · 25/05/2025 19:32

That's both rude and annoying

Now you mention it, yes.

Tell me about it! But for half an hour, you suck it up, right?

Scrolling while others watch TV? Fine.

Scrolling with the sound on while others watch TV? Should be punishable by death.

My mother has recently started doing this and it drives me utterly insane. It’s so bloody rude and competing sounds like that are awful. She’s only started doing it in the last couple of years since she’s lived on her own; I think she’s lost all concept of manners.

Totally agree with you - the death sentence is completely appropriate for this.

I do wonder whether there is a similarity with your mum’s situation here in that DH works away a lot and spends a great deal of time on his own, doing as he pleases.

It's so annoying. He needs to turn the volume off or sit somewhere else

TheOrphanTree · 25/05/2025 22:04

No sound on phones when something else is already playing is a rule in our house. No matter whose phone. We all have ear buds and use them for this.

healthybychristmas · 25/05/2025 23:18

Does he own headphones and if so why doesn't he use them? It's incredibly rude.

healthybychristmas · 25/05/2025 23:19

And if he is aware a lot it's even more important that he spends time, proper quality time, with his children.

Skibadeedoo · 25/05/2025 23:19

Thanks for all the replies. So glad it’s not just me that thinks it’s beyond unacceptable!!
