To feel embarrassed about work recognition

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 15:59

I was just named in our town hall for my contributions to a particular project.

I attended a few meetings about this and gave someone advice about some aspects of the project nearly a year ago.

AIBU to feel embarrassed? I did nothing to invite this recognition but I feel like a complete fraud.

And should I confess? I don't even know who nominated me to be recognised. It's so confusing.

More detail!

do you mean your name is engraved in the town hall?!
you’re up for an award?!
who said this?
in what context?

The head of my department listed about 4 people who were instrumentally involved in this project.

One person definitely did a very large amount of work. Another of the people ,awkwardly, is my work enemy.

It was a quick mention but in a super important meeting. No written formal recognition or anything like that.

So that’s it? Or are you now in the running for a council award?

HuskyNew · 22/05/2025 16:03

Who cares then. Quick mention ina meeting. Only you will still be remembering it.

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 16:04

No, that's it. I feel like I need to apologise to my work enemy. I have no idea how much work she did on the project, though.

Just nod and smile. Do you think a man would think like this? Accept the recognition and add it to your list of accomplishments to mention at your next review/interview.

Good grief op

you have massive personal shit going on in your life concerning your son’s safety!

Forget this comment. You made out that it was some kind of town award!

Seriously? So you don’t know how much work she’s done

she’s your “enemy”

and you want to apologise to her for a comment your boss made during a meeting

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 16:12

Unfortunately, my son's safety is always in question and will remain so for at least 9 more years. The rest of life needs to go on.

I'm utterly flummoxed why I was recognised in this event though. It's a huge international meeting, not just a huddle with a handful of people.

“Work enemy” … I would work on that, rather than worrying about your name being called out. You’re a professional woman, you don’t need to make people into “enemies”

one person mentioned it on one meeting

your op indicates that it was an award? That would be bestowed upon you in the town hall?

Damn good point

HundredMilesAnHour · 22/05/2025 16:20

Just accept the recognition, be grateful and move on. Your contribution may have meant or felt like very little to you at the time but that doesn’t mean that others felt the same way or the end result of your contribution wasn’t significant.

Sometimes feedback like this can be very revealing as we may not be aware of some of our strengths and assume that everyone else performs at the same level when it’s something that comes naturally/easily to us. And that’s often not the case!

A town hall is a work group meeting with lots of attendees

It isn't council related or anything to do with that

Just business jargon

It's difficult to explain but I did not seek to make an enemy. This person is senior to me and bullied me in very distressing ways for a while.

op, pause. This is daft

But the op says “an award”!

The replies to this are bizarre. Lots of companies have what they call a ‘town hall’ it’s just a meeting for all departments to provide updates and celebrate successes.

I haven’t read the OP’s other threads, but doesn’t sound like it is relevant to this post. As OP said, life goes on even if there is something else happening in the background.

A town hall is a kind of meeting of a whole company nothing to do with The Town Hall, municipal bldg

Edited

I know

but then the op starts talking about being nominated for an award

MollyButton · 22/05/2025 16:26

A colleague got an OBE. She has done a lot of very good work but the project she “officially” got it for she feels she only made a slight contribution to (that’s not a totally accurate summary but close enough).
However she is proud and considers it an acknowledgement both of her other sterling work and the cause which was very worthwhile.

i think you are feeling a little “imposter syndrome” and just make sure you thank and acknowledge those who made it all happen. It’s partly their recognition too!

There are awards at our town halls. It might be a day off, a £10.00 gift voucher, a bag of sweets. Nothing to get too excited over. I don’t get what you find so hard to understand about it
