To feel embarrassed about work recognition

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 15:59

I was just named in our town hall for my contributions to a particular project.

I attended a few meetings about this and gave someone advice about some aspects of the project nearly a year ago.

AIBU to feel embarrassed? I did nothing to invite this recognition but I feel like a complete fraud.

And should I confess? I don't even know who nominated me to be recognised. It's so confusing.

But the op mentions “nomination”

and “award”!!

Yes, you can also be nominated to go for a lunch and things like that. It’s not a difficult concept at all

Yes

But there is no mention thereafter.

the award op… what is it?!

DollopOfFun · 22/05/2025 16:31

Where does the OP say she's getting an award?

roseymoira · 22/05/2025 16:31

Anewemail · 22/05/2025 16:30

Yes

Might not even be an award. The OP doesn’t reference a reward, just recognition. Obviously a colleague has nominated her for.

Doggymummar · 22/05/2025 16:32

Anewemail · 22/05/2025 16:26

I know

but then the op starts talking about being nominated for an award

Must have missed that sozzers

Todayisaday · 22/05/2025 16:36

Your contributions were obviously valuable.
Value isnt hours, sometimes its direction and strategy. I imagine whatever inputs you gave were valuable to ensuring the project went ahead in the right direction. Even though others executed, you provided strategy.
I have said one or two lines at the start of projects before, that make people think, rause important points and ensure the younger team members have direction. If I didnt contribute, there would likely be failure and chaos. But did I actually Do the work, no. My team did. But thats why you have directors and managers, to direct and manage the actual people doing the stuff.
I would take the compliment and have a chat with your line manager about takimg more leadership responsibility as clearly you have value in that kind of role.

F1LandoFan · 22/05/2025 16:48

The way some MNers reply to posts really grinds my gears!!

OP, I’m sorry you’ve been questioned about why this is important to you, I’m sorry that people who don’t understand ‘town hall’ have become fixated on this, and I’m sorry you’ve had other (irrelevant to this post) details of your life brought into it.

I also understand your mention of a ‘work enemy’. I’m sure lots of people have one and again, it’s not a big deal and doesn’t need over analysis.

I work in a business where we have town halls so totally understand what you’re saying. I would feel exactly the same if I was praised for a project I felt I didn’t really deliver on. However, someone has clearly included your name as felt you were instrumental in that project. Whether your contribution was as big as others, it sounds like it was a team effort. Even your ‘work enemy’ will know you didn’t put your own name forward, so just think, the group of you that delivered this project in some capacity have had a thank you for it :) x

DoYouReally · 22/05/2025 18:32

Maybe (almost definitely) you are actually very good at what you do and your contribution had a really positive impact.

You probably see it as just doing your job, same as most others would do. That's what most women do, play it down rather than up.

Accept you played a role and did well.

As for work enemies, eleminate that. Kill them with kindness and don't give them enough head space or time to elevate them to the role of work enemy.

The op did not mention an award?

SwanOfThoseThings · 22/05/2025 18:57

Anewemail · 22/05/2025 16:00

More detail!

do you mean your name is engraved in the town hall?!
you’re up for an award?!
who said this?
in what context?

Tell me you've never worked for a large corporate without telling me you've never worked for a large corporate.

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 19:06

In my organisation, recognition is considered reward enough 😂

Mine’s the same! Maybe we work for the same place!

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 19:46

These comments are making me feel a lot better.

I cast my mind back to when I had this one conversation, and realised that I may have really shone due to some relationships that I built around the same time. But who knows! Maybe I will never find out.

Where does your son's safety come into this?

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 22/05/2025 20:07

Work enemy? Grow up.

Better to have an arch nemesis imo.

Just nod and smile. Do you think a man would think like this? Accept the recognition and add it to your list of accomplishments to mention at your next review/interview.

What an earth has gender got to do with this
Do you think all women would have been embarrassed

NewsdeskJC · 23/05/2025 07:09

Accept it gracefully
It will be balanced no doubt at some stage with no mention of you when you have done substantive work.
I have had similar. I mentioned it once, and someone pointed out the entire bloody project was my idea!

Artesia · 23/05/2025 10:51

OrangeCrushes · 22/05/2025 16:12

Unfortunately, my son's safety is always in question and will remain so for at least 9 more years. The rest of life needs to go on.

I'm utterly flummoxed why I was recognised in this event though. It's a huge international meeting, not just a huddle with a handful of people.

I can guarantee you that almost no one else will even remember the comment within 30 seconds of the town hall ending. You are massively over thinking.

Espressosummer · 23/05/2025 11:21

roseymoira · 22/05/2025 16:28

There are awards at our town halls. It might be a day off, a £10.00 gift voucher, a bag of sweets. Nothing to get too excited over. I don’t get what you find so hard to understand about it

Not everyone works in a company that operates like yours @roseymoira
I've never heard townhall used as you describe it, or heard of nominations and awards for such minor things as you've listed. We all have different work experiences, no need to be rude to somebody who is a bit confused by terminology used in a way they've never heard before.

No, the poster I was replying to was actually rude, looks like that’s why some of her comments have been removed

A town hall is a work group meeting with lots of attendees

It isn't council related or anything to do with that

Just business jargon

For additional corporate nonsense, see here ;)

This is just impostor syndrome.
You are a capable and talented professional with valuable experience who deserves recognition and praise.
It's all ok.

Exactly. Corporate speak is bollocks. I'd never heard of town Hall either, makes no sense.

Haveapotato · 23/05/2025 12:47

I take 'town hall' and I raise you 'all hands'...

OP don't worry about it. I've been mentioned several times on our TH's for projects I was only tangentially involved in, and one of my colleagues was nominated for an award for project where he did about 20 mins work for someone and had forgotten what it even was. I think sometimes the really senior people don't know exactly who did what on the ground so best to mention everyone who was involved in a successful project.
