I've always held off getting a kindle - as I have always been a real book person- but recently I've found a number of American magazines that are expensive to ship but much cheaper on a kindle version- if you have a kindle, what do you think of it?

Get a kindle. Love mine. You can take War and Peace on holiday.

Nothing says holiday like War and Peace!

ilovesooty · 22/05/2025 20:23

I love mine. I don't know how I'd do without it on holiday.

Amen to that! I used to have to take a separate suitcase for my four well-thumbed, hardback volumes.

I had a Kindle years ago, now I use the Kindle app on my phone/tablet/laptop. The app is available on Play Store or Apple so I genuinely don't understand why you would need a separate device for this now? Unless I'm just being completely thick?

It's because the Kindle screen is quite different from a lighted tablet or phone screen. If you don't turn on the light, you have the same experience as reading print on a paper page. No glare, and no blue light which will keep you awake. Also the kindle itself is much lighter than a same-sized tablet, offers many hours of reading time without charging, is lighter to carry and less likely to break if dropped because it isn't glass.

hmmm good point- I do actually have an ipad - maybe I should investigate the kindle app on that instead. I hate reading on my phone so that wouldn't work for me. I was thinking of a kindle as a device to always leave in my bag- (My ipad is quite big and I don't always carry it around)

I absolutely love the Kindle app - apart from the controls, if you know what I mean - on my iPad and very rarely think of buying a book when I can just download it to my iPad. I have never seen the point of buying a Kindle when I can get the same content on my iPad mini (which is probably my favourite-ever piece of tech by some way).

Just make sure, before you start reading a title you have downloaded, that you deactivate the function that marks up passages other readers have liked. It will drive you mad otherwise!

Just use kindle app on phone.

It's not the same, at all.

RaraRachael · 23/05/2025 15:04

I hate using the Kindle app. Gave up after a couple of attempts

I love my kindle, it’s so handy for reading whilst travelling, on holiday, and provides instant access to the next book in the series when I finish the current one. Saves me from lugging 10 books in my suitcase or hauling a chunky hardback around on the train to work!!

I do also love real books and always get my favourite books to add to my bookshelf 😂 but the kindle just allows me to read quickly and easily on the go.

I don’t find reading on a phone/tablet comparable, due to notifications, screen type (shiny vs matte) weight, battery life and comfort. My kindle lasts for a month per charge!

zingally · 23/05/2025 15:48

I also held off on a kindle for years and years.

But in the end caved and got one before going on a 2-week cruise with a lot of sea days. And since then, I was sold. It's perfect for reading in bed if you do a lot of that! Much more comfortable and easier than using a book, and the backlit screen is easier on the eyes.

Doone22 · 24/05/2025 08:57

Hate using kindle on phone. I prefer tablet size for reading. I love mine

Cocojazz · 13/06/2025 21:57

Thank you for this thread. It made me dig out my old Paperwhite and I have fallen in love with it again. Smaller and lighter than my mini iPad plus I know it’s better for my eyes. Another plus is all the books that I was reading via the Kindle app are all on my Kindle so it’s been a seamless switch!

pambeesleyhalpert · 13/06/2025 22:00

I love it- it took me a while because I love a paper book. I have kindle unlimited so I can also listen to audiobooks as well for the car. I was spending a fortune on audible so it’s a win win!

If you have Spotify premium you get 20 hrs audiobook/podcast a month.
Also libraries have Apps like BorrowBox or Libby.
I have an Audible subscription as well as the above so do ok each month.

Does anyone know of a scrolling kindle - instead of having to turn pages

Thank you

How would that be any easier? Turning pages just requires a tap.

RaraRachael · 24/09/2025 17:00

I love my kindle and am now on my second one in 13 years
I have poor eyesight so it's great to be able to increase the font size.
It really comes into its own on trips instead of lugging books around.

JaceLancs · 24/09/2025 17:03

I only really use mine on holiday but wouldn’t be without it
I’ve downloaded 23 new books recently as am away and can easily do 1-2 books a day round the pool

chickensandbees · 24/09/2025 17:42

I love my kindle. As others have said its very light and you can read anywhere, in the sunlight etc. Holds 1000s of books. Also I don't like to take my phone to bed, so having a kindle by my bed that I can read at night is brilliant.

Would not be without it.

Also love real books and the library and audio books.
