get a kindle - yes or no?

I've always held off getting a kindle - as I have always been a real book person- but recently I've found a number of American magazines that are expensive to ship but much cheaper on a kindle version- if you have a kindle, what do you think of it?

I get through two or three books a week and you’d have to wrest my kindle from my cold dead hands. It’s light, I can read in the dark and bright sunlight, access new books immediately and it fits in my handbag. I absolutely love it.

I use my kindle all the time, but if you want to read magazines, a tablet with a Readly subscription would surely be better. Also check your library membership - you can often access loads of magazines and newspapers for free through PressReader or similar.

£12.99 a MONTH!?!!?

idrinkandiknowthings · 22/05/2025 13:22

I love the feel of an actual book and turning the pages, also seeing all my books on display on my shelves. I can appreciate that a Kindle is better for taking on holiday though.

I love mine. You can still read paper books, it is not all or nothing, it is not second class reading because it's on a screen.

I can carry 1000 books in my bag on holiday for less than the weight of a paperback, I usually average one a day on holiday so this gives me way more room in my suitcase. Once I was on the beach, saw that a book I really wanted to read was 99p, within 5 minutes I was reading it thanks to the beach bar wifi.

Absolutely this!

Strollingby · 22/05/2025 13:24

I bought mine for convenience when travelling for work a lot back in 2010. I am on my second and wouldn't choose to go back to physical books now.
I mostly read in bed. Not needing the light on, being able to change the font, and getting new books on demand are my favourite three things about it.

No! But hear me out. I wouldn’t buy a kindle but I have the kindle App and kindle unlimited across a few devices.

I use my existing tablet or phone to read. Wouldn’t spend the money for a standalone kindle if you have a tablet you could use

This. I use the kindle app on my iPad mini, and the Apple Books app too.

Picklechicken · 22/05/2025 13:25

Bucking the trend….

I got one for Christmas last year. I really tried to get on with it, spent ages downloading and reading things etc but I’ve gone back to paper books. I just like the feel of holding the book, being able to see how far through it I am, being able to easily flick back to something. With a kindle it’s just really hard to do that. But I do like it for some things - I like the fact I can download samples to try books, and I read a lot of true crime / biography type stuff and they’re often a lot cheaper on the kindle so I’ll use it for that. But there’s still something I really enjoy about snuggling down in bed with a “proper” book.

Crispynoodle · 22/05/2025 13:29

I love mine! I’m on my 4th

MinnieMountain · 22/05/2025 13:29

DH got me one for when I was breastfeeding. It was handy. I now use it for the free samples and when I’m on holiday. I prefer a physical book.

tinyspiny · 22/05/2025 13:32

Love mine , I hadn’t read for years but restarted on a kindle and now read every night before I go to sleep , it’s so convenient as I don’t need a light on . My daughter has a kindle but also still buys actual books because she likes both .

Hankunamatata · 22/05/2025 13:34

I ditched my kindle and got a kobo ereader as it loads libby books easily from library. And borrowbox is easy enough via pc

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 22/05/2025 13:34

I LOVE it because I can read in bed, in the dark after my partner is asleep. It also helps me get to sleep as having the light on is less sleep-inducing.

Gundogday · 22/05/2025 13:38

I always assumed I’d be a ‘real book person’ but was given one that someone wasn’t using and became a convert.

Advantages for me include reading in bed ( as they’re back lit), buying books cheaply (use Bookbub to get book suggestions), they’re light and easy to carry about. The battery life is superb and You can adjust the text size to your preference, plus look up words you don’t know easily.

I have got the kindle app on my phone but much prefer the kindle. The kindle screen and text is easier to read.

I have got a few real books recently but find them heavily to hold now!

You can sign up to kindle unlimited but I’ve got a stockpile so have stopped my subscription for now.

Sirzy · 22/05/2025 13:39

I love my kindle. I still read “normal” books but the kindle is so handy, especially as someone who reads daily and pretty fast. It’s much better than the kindle app on phone or tablet (I do have it on my phone though for times I’m out and don’t have my kindle!)

hmmm good point- I do actually have an ipad - maybe I should investigate the kindle app on that instead. I hate reading on my phone so that wouldn't work for me. I was thinking of a kindle as a device to always leave in my bag- (My ipad is quite big and I don't always carry it around)

I used to use the kindle app on my iPad but now have an actual kindle which is a lot lighter and easier to take out with me. I was always a book person but the kindle is so much better for using wherever you want, and you don’t need light to read it. I wouldn’t be without mine. In fact I have just upgraded to the kindle coloursoft and I love it.

I’ve got kindle scribe, I like it but if I had to choose again I’d get the Kobo colour. I basically like the colour aspect and the fact you can write notes directly onto the text of ebooks. With the kindle it’s a bit fiddly.

Yes another reason to get a Kobo.

porridgecake · 22/05/2025 13:45

I travel a lot. Probably around half the year outside the UK. I love my kindle and I particularly like the 99p deals on amazon. I have several novels and biographies on my kindle, much easier to take with me than actual books.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 22/05/2025 13:56

Grandmatrish1 · 22/05/2025 12:36

Yes, I love mine. I have over 700 books on mine. I read every day. I can't imagine owning 700 books.

I can imagine owning 700 books - when I downsized last year I could not bring with me hundreds and hundreds of books that I had gained over a lifetime, and nobody, but nobody wanted them. I contacted dozens of charities including one that claimed to be a lietacy charity providing free books to people in my home area - not one wanted books. All in excellent condition. I ended up having to throw many away, and it broke my heart to do that.

Thank God I have a Kindle because at least I didn't have to throw away the other 700+ books on there. I seldom buy "real" books any more, only in the rare instance that one isn't on KIndle.

OP there is a free KIndle app - which I also have - but I so would not be without my paperwhite because I can read it anywhere, and even drop it in the pool! Try reading a book you dropped in the pool...

SixFeetUnder · 22/05/2025 14:00

I wouldn't be without my paperwhite, it's size means it's handy to keep in my handbag and battery life is great. I also bought a page turner (hear me out!) which is great for if I'm chilly and want to lie under a blanket without my arm hanging out to keep turning the page.

Redglitter · 22/05/2025 14:05

I wouldn't be without one. The app for the phone etc is ok if you haven't got your kindle with you but it's nothing like having the real thing. If you read a lot I'd definitely invest in one. You'll love it

I have a Kindle and an iPad Mini that I have the kindle app on.

It's an old Kindle, but I use it mostly on holidays by the pool as I'm not so bothered if it gets damaged or stolen. I wouldn't want to lose my iPad though!

The biggest difference is the screen being matte on a Kindle versus reflective on an iPad. I bought a screen protector for my iPad that makes it easier to use a pencil on, so it's made it matte anyway.

I'd definitely suggest trying the app on your iPad first then deciding whether you want another device. The battery on a kindle does last a lot longer.

I agree with a Readly subscription though. There's currently a deal to try it for free for a month.

DancingLions · 22/05/2025 14:07

I think it depends when you'd be using it. I have a kindle but literally only use it on holiday. The rest of the time I tend to only read in bed, so I just use my iPad. I also have the kindle and Kobo apps on my phone for those odd moments when you might be stuck waiting somewhere. I wouldn't read on my phone all the time but it's ok from time to time.

I read using the kindle app on my ipad - its great. I especially love that fact that if you want to check a fact you can switch tabs to an internet search. I was an avid bookworm and thought I'd not enjoy reading on an ipad but actually I much prefer it now.

Carnation25 · 22/05/2025 14:10

I love books and was a bit sceptical when my husband bought me a kindle for my birthday, however it is brilliant. Stores lots of books, is bery light (even with a protective case), very portable and back light means I can read in full sun or in the dark & it doesn't tire my eyes like a laptop/iPad screen. The battery lasts for ages. Another plus for me is that I can increase the font size so I can read in bed without wearing my reading glasses.
