To ask how much to fix a door handle? I’ve been stupid

I have had really bad OCD since the birth of my baby last year and this manifests in checking doors are locked multiple times. The front door handle feels loose :( we only got a new door less than a year ago. Is it going to be a really costly repair?

You can probably tighten the screws yourself . Google / look on you tube

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 20/05/2025 22:53

Yes, just tighten the screws.

Find the make and model of your door handle and type it into to you tube with tighten or loose. Something will come up that will help you fox it really easily. They are designed to be fixable

Is it under warranty

Lammveg · 20/05/2025 23:49

You can tighten the screws or change the handle yourself, honestly it's fairly easy and lots of videos on YouTube about it. Do you have some help for your OCD?

Not expensive at all. Either the screws are loose or you may have overworked the spring that makes the handle go back into position. The vast majority of "new" door handles are incredibly cheap - and the internal part that is the "spring" that causes the handle to return back to its starter point is not only easy to replace, it's also very very cheap. You aren't replacing the actual lock barrel here, which is the expensive part.

You can find lots of guides on what you need to do to figure out how to replace a door handle: the key here is the distance in space between the screws that hold the handle onto the door, and the distance between them and the handle itself. There are literally websites that explain this very simply. And you can just buy a generic door handle (I'll assume it's a white one for a PVC door??) at Screwfix etc very cheaply. You can also take photos of the handle (hold a tapemeasure next to it and be sure to have the measurements) and take the photos along to Screwfix or Toolstation or indeed any other shop that sells such things. Or just buy something from Amazon. I wouldn't pay anyone to do this - all you need is a screwdriver to replace the handle.

Alot of door handles can be a "generic" brand - meaning the more useful information isn't who made it, but rather what the measurement spacing is between the two screws that tend to hold the handles to the doors, and the distance to the handle. There are plenty of websites and videos that explain how to figure this out. Just look for "how to replace door handle" or "how to tighten door handle" etc etc.
