When are you ‘too old’ for Instagram

Discussion with a friend last night. She is the same age as me (34) but says she hasn’t had an Instagram account since her late 20’s as she has ‘grown out of that sort of thing’.

I still do the odd story and put some photos up.

Anyone else still posting at the ripe old age of mid 30’s, or do you agree with my friend?!

YABU - it is more for people in their 20’s/younger
YANBU - nothing wrong with posting in your 30’s+

Geez…….some SM sites are better than others. Some are toxic as hell, like X (Twitter) which I left a loooong time ago. I quite like some of the stuff on Reddit, but am careful. Don’t use FB anymore. Whatever floats your boat. I have followers of all ages on my IG….i don’t give a shit about age. I’m happy posting images, stories, reels, etc and love getting a bit of a laugh, or some talk going, but I’m not on it all the time. I hate bloody influencers though. I deliberately don’t follow.

Echobelly · 18/05/2025 16:18

I was apparently never the right age for it (or always too old for it maybe). I wondered if it might make an alternative for FB when that got 'enshittified' a gew years ago and started showing me algorithm-led bollocks rather than my friends' feeds, but by then Insta was the same so even if many friends/family had been on it, it was also no good. I'm sure I missed its peak, but I can't see what it's good for now, it's just the same old algorithmic meme glurge you get everywhere/

Lins77 · 18/05/2025 16:21

I'm on it in my 50s 😂

Mainly because my daughter posts a lot of stuff. But other reasons too.

The influencers who are constantly trying to sell you things are annoying though.

Can't stand Facebook.

Dogpawsandcatwhiskers · 18/05/2025 16:35

It's not about age, it's about whether you put all your effort or get sucked into living in the real world or online. I've gone more minimal online over the years - apart from here obv! 🤣

House0fBamboo · 18/05/2025 16:52

I'm In my 50s and have about 50k followers. I never get influencers or such, probably because I don't follow any 😂 I don't use fb or Snapchat etc but have a throwaway Twitter account.

2BrownDogs · 18/05/2025 16:54

Im 42 and never had it. Don't see the appeal.

PrettyPuss · 18/05/2025 16:55

Seriously? I’m 53. My best friend’s parents post on Instagram.

redcord · 18/05/2025 17:02

Well it's a lot of businesses and organisations, and cultural stuff, so I'm not sure what you mean by 'age'. For instance, I'm in the arts and well, the Tate has some great content and it's (checks) 127 years old. Then there are the artists. Tracy Emin for eg, 61 ... I mean lots of professional and creative women post. So I think the question is, what do you use it for? You find your lane and post accordingly.

loropianalover · 18/05/2025 17:03

Any app / website is what you make of it. You can be on Instagram at 80 if you want.

2ndbestslayer · 18/05/2025 17:06

According to my 15 year old insta is for us oldies. Tiktok and snapchat are where the kids are. I tend to think of insta as more 30s to middle age and the Facebook for the older crowd

Sarah2891 · 18/05/2025 17:08

Nobody is too old for Instagram

Sassybooklover · 18/05/2025 17:08

I use Instagram and I'm 50!! 🤣 I read a lot, so use it to follow authors etc but I do post sometimes.

chattyness · 18/05/2025 17:08

I'm 60 & I love Insta, everyone has always been lovely to me & I've never had any negativity there unlike FB and the cesspit that is X . I just post a few pics and enter some competitions, chat to friends etc. I don't post videos or reels though, I ain't got no time for that! 😆

Flannelfeet · 18/05/2025 17:08

I know a 93 year old who is on Facebook, I think its brilliant that shes up there with technology.

Endofyear · 18/05/2025 18:34

I don't do Instagram or ticktock but I've got lots of friends in their 50s that do!

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/05/2025 21:23

I love my Insta account, I’m 55 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChickenEggChicken · 18/05/2025 21:27

Instagram is whatever you want to use it for. I’m 52 and use it primarily for following arts organisations, galleries, theatres, festivals. I do post, but it’s not primarily what I use it for. It doesn’t have to be a vapid series of photos of you trotting along a beach on your holidays with your stomach sucked in doing a duckface pout that took you 30 goes, a lot of edits and a beauty filter.
