To ask if there's a tasty supermarket birthday cake?

I haven't bought a supermarket cake for years.

Is there one that's tastier than others? I've left it too late to get one made by a baker.
I didn't think dh would want one as he's been doing keto. But said he would when I dropped hints. Any flavour will do.

It's to feed at least 8. TIA

I got a chocolate celebration cake from Waitrose for my XH’s birthday. I was surprised how nice it was, as I’m a cake maker by trade so usually hate shop cakes! (But wasn’t about to spend the best part of a day working for my ex!)

The range of supermarket birthday cakes is huge so of course there are. Obviously your budget and preferred flavour plays a big part in it too. Go to M&S if you want one a bit fancier

MidnightPatrol · 18/05/2025 14:03

I think all supermarket birthday cakes are pretty delicious.

Go to a posh supermarket and you can’t go wrong.

The chocolate one from Sainsbury’s is the best. We’ve tried many chocolate cakes, but this one is the one we now always buy. https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/large-seriously-chocolate-cake-128kg-serves-20-

Morrisons does a triple layer chocolate one that’s really nice and moist.

Glittertwins · 18/05/2025 14:18

The M&S one’s are pretty good.

PatMustardsBigTool · 18/05/2025 14:18

I’ve never had a bad caterpillar cake from a variety of supermarkets, always moist and chocolatey. Aldi also do a really nice Madeira cake

Comedycook · 18/05/2025 14:33

The m and s chocolate one is delicious...its the one with kind of chocolate curls all around the edge

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 18/05/2025 14:36

Colin the caterpillar or Waitrose celebration cake

HunterHearstHelmsley · 18/05/2025 14:46

I try and avoid the chocolate ones from the supermarket as they're always dry. Plus side though, if anyone serves one you can dispose of it in a plant pot 🤣

Usually can't go wrong with the M&S cakes. Sainsburys used to be good but they've gone a bit off over the last couple of years.

Thanks everyone. So glad to hear they taste ok.

Nearby we have Tesco Asda M&S and Morrisons Aldi and Lidl. Only little Sainsbury's.

I was thinking up to £50? So these sound fab.

We had the M&S rainbow cake for one on the DC’s birthdays as I didn’t have time too make one, it was pretty good.

Nanny0gg · 18/05/2025 14:50

If you can get Fiona Cairns at any of them, do - they are absolutely delicious

LushLemonTart · 18/05/2025 14:50

This one would be perfect for me bastard hackers 😡

Really like the M and S one (jam sponge with pale blue icing and balloons on) about £20.00 for one to serve 12 )
