To take her back to the hospital before Tuesday?

DD (9) has been unwell since last Wednesday. It started off with a couple of days of random high temperatures but no other symptoms to suggest that she was unwell or how she was unwell. Took her up the hospital and she was diagnosed with a UTI.

The fever then came down - and stayed down - from Saturday onwards. She came back from school on Wednesday, and the fever had started again. Took her back up the hospital on Thursday (on open access) and they said that she still had the urine infection (but the urine culture hadn’t grown any bacteria) and she was prescribed some more antibiotics.

She was just deteriorating by the day, and I wasn’t happy with how she was presenting, so I took her to a different hospital on Friday. They finally done some bloods - which came back okay, just slightly elevated inflammatory markers - and they said if she was still having high temperatures by Tuesday, then to take her back in.

Her temperature is now exceeding 40, more than once, and she is needing basically the maximum amount of paracetamol and ibuprofen to try and keep it under control but it still isn’t coming down to a normal level. She has had a non-stop fever for the last 5 days now.

She has never had a ‘viral’ illness like this before, and never had temperatures like this before even with all of the other illnesses she’s had throughout the years and I’m just not convinced this is just a viral infection sort of situation.

She has autism, and finds the hospital quite distressing but I am worried about her - AIBU to take her back up there again even though they have said to wait until Monday evening to see what her temperature is like?

Yes i’d take her back in if you’re concerned, don’t wait.

feelingbleh · 18/05/2025 06:15

Yeah I'd take her back she might need iv antibiotics

Ponoka7 · 18/05/2025 06:15

So she's 48 hours on the latest antibiotics? Definitely take her back in. Something is going on and they might have misdiagnosed her.

Eenameenadeeka · 18/05/2025 06:31

I'd take her in

ohfourfoxache · 18/05/2025 06:41

Yes, go back in. Please.

Rumbley · 18/05/2025 06:42

Yes I would

if painkillers aren’t keeping temp down, then it’s serious

i did with my toddler and… double pneumonia

Oneearringlost · 18/05/2025 06:52

Yes, I'd take her back, her temperature seems intransigent to 2 types of antibiotics; she may need a stronger/IV antibiotic, she may have a sterile 'pyyuria', which sometimes won't show on a urine culture. She may need a scan of her kidneys and urinary tract.

Poor mite, I bet she's feeling wretched.

whynotmereally · 18/05/2025 07:09

I was similar and it was a kidney infection I needed several days of Iv antibiotics plus a drip as I was dehydrated. I’d go back.

LaLaBall · 18/05/2025 07:11

Take her in. Always better safe thn sorry.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/05/2025 07:16

Take her back.
Her condition has deteriorated from the point that the advice was given.

Trumptonagain · 18/05/2025 11:08

Take her back, even if you called 111, if in the UK, they'd probably tell you the same.

Also is she drinking enough fluids?
Only ask because when you have a UTI it can really hurt when you pee so you cut down on fluids thinking you'll slow down with going to the toilet but it's not the best thing to do.

Hopefully your DD makes a speedy recovery
