Live and let live and I understand people love it, but it’s a mystery to me? DH has been glued to telly today watching Crystal Palace!

Some of the ridiculous, sneering comments on this thread have made me determined to take more interest in football next season. I think that as a 50-something lover of Italian opera and Taylor Swift, Michelin stars and McDonald's, David Graeber and Jilly Cooper, etc etc, it would be an interesting new diversion. Something to distract me when I'm a bit bogged down in my PhD, perhaps.

Honestly - 'I would never, ever be friends with someone into football'? And yet I bet you bemoan the 'tribalism' of football, don't you?

Most adults understand that people are complex and, as @murasaki says, can't be put into a box. Others, it seems, don't have that level of insight.

No, no, no ...
You can't possibly be a well rounded, educated, intelligent person AND enjoy football. It's one or the other.

I've just told my DH that he needs to choose the season ticket or the PhD. He can't have both 🤷🏼‍♀️

Cardiff City?

ForeveraBluebird · 19/05/2025 10:22

@DuncinToffee , Everton for you maybe, and yes, Cardiff City always.

💙Good luck next season, hope you go back up

ZoggyStirdust · 19/05/2025 11:22

I remember explaining to my daughter just before I took her to her first ever game that once you’d chosen your side that was it. You could never change no matter how bad they got.

ZoggyStirdust · 19/05/2025 11:23

And whilst they’re not my side, I have a soft spot for Wednesday as they were my grandads team. Always hope they do well

i always say it's like the wands in Harry Potter "the wand chooses the wizzard, Harry"

But yes - once you're in, you're in.

@SquashedSquid are you having a spelling punctuation and grammar dig, or do you just fancy some pasta .

So true. It's my longest relationship, forged in primary school, outside the one with my parents and sisters. Even when they're shit, you can't leave or pick another team. It doesn't work like that.

x2boys · 19/05/2025 12:49

Some typical mumsnet, responses, " I don't understand how people can like something I don't like"
I'm not a huge football fan and only get excited for the world and European cup
But football is huge and has millions of fans across the world mumsnet, can be so petty about it.

Unnecessary. I see your desire to sneer is unabated.

Of course it’s sexist. You are glad you had a DD because girls don’t like football is completely sexist. By your logic a far larger proportion of women are nurses than men therefore nursing is a profession for women. The world has changed since the 1950’s, you really should try and keep up with it.

Yes, well done - you seem to be grasping basic fact now. I am glad I had a DD as with a girl the chance of ending up stuck beside a rainy football pitch every Saturday morning watching them kick a ball around is far less than if I’d had a boy. Again, not sexist, just fact that football is far more popular amongst males. Frankly I’d rather stand and watch paint dry

So is there something you do enjoy doing or watching?

Redpeach · 19/05/2025 13:10

The thing is with football fans is they can be a little obsessive, which affects people around them

I’m going to break this to you gently, there’s other things to do in the world that don’t involve either playing or watching football. This does seem to be a hard theory for the football fans to grasp so I apologise to them in advance 🙏

Continuing to patronise I see.

Oblomov25 · 19/05/2025 13:17

I don't like cycling, fishing or cricket. But I can appreciate that some do. Is the same sentiment beyond your empathy comprehension? 🙄

Im.not a massive football fan either
But it is becoming increasingly popular amongst females to you may have heard of the Lionesses...

I most definitely appreciate that some people like are absolutely obsessed with football, however mildly expressing my hatred of it seems to have ruffled a few feathers of those who seem to believe that football is the centre of the universe.

What patronising guff.

I listed some of the things I'm interested in in addition to football, I apologise if they are also not valid interests.

give over. You made a sexist assumption that because you had a DD she wouldn't be into football (and is instead into something else that lots of girls do)

ETA: my parents, for a while, got stuck standing out in the wind and the rain watching me be a rather rubbish hockey goalie.

I don’t need to list my interests for you in order to make up for the alleged hole in my life that my lack of football obsession seems to have created, according to some. Hope this helps 👍
