Strangers who think we all love their dog

I'm a bit pissed off and need a rant. Sitting on the park with my kids, we had a large bottle of water nearly full, next to us on the grass. The top was off as one of the kids had just had some. The park is a large field and we were not near anyone else. We were minding our business.
These two women walked past with a dog on a lead. I didn't expect them to get as close as they did. They came literally right up to us. The dog (on the lead) came between me and the kids and licked the rim of the water bottle. One of the women did a tinkly laugh and I said " oh no" in an annoyed tone and told one of my kids that the water would have to go in the bin now. They just walked off grinning and I heard them say something like " imagine being like that over a dog."
I did not say anything but got up and threw it in the bin. If they'd said sorry it would have been alright or if the dog was off the lead I would have been annoyed still. But the way they actively led it over to us and allowed it to do that, then laughed about it. Aibu for being annoyed? It's not even really about the water. It's about having personal space invaded needlessly when I'm minding my own business by people who are nosy and need to see what I'm doing. And partly people with dogs who think it's acceptable because the dog likes people making a fuss of it. By the way I actually like dogs and have 2 but I have never allowed them to do this and actively keep them away from people in public.

Ooh, there hasn’t been a dog-hating thread for at least two and a half hours now…thank god one has appeared!

Yep - let’s see how long it takes for dog hate bingo cards to be completed.

Aunt Sally will be along soon with the dingy green biscuit woman.

It's........... Rebekah Vardy's account.

I grew up in a household with a dog and cats. We have a cat as we couldn’t give enough time to a dog as we both worked FT. Now DH has retired when the cat who is now quite old slips off this mortal coil he would like a dog. When I see the piss poor behaviour of dogs because their owners are crap it really annoys me.

I would worry about a dog either attacking or just not having good recoil hurting any dog I owned even by accident. We just had a small dog when I was a child and that is my preference. It is since lockdown that it’s go so bad.

RaininSummer · 17/05/2025 18:35

I love dogs but the first two examples are of total idiot rude owners tbh.

That's what people on here are saying. It's not dog hating, it's criticism of lazy and entitled owners.

HowManyDucks · 17/05/2025 18:55

I was finishing my morning run and saw someone's dog pee in somebody else's Waitrose bag that was on the floor. I didn't stick around to see how that unfolded but did hear the line "I'm sorry, my dog peed in your bag"

Well if people controlled them then maybe there wouldn't be so many.

Once when my kids were very small and eating a picnic at a picnic table, a dog suddenly ran under the table and thrust its head up between my son’s legs and tried to take his sandwich.

Another time we were on the beach and a dog tried to bite his nappy off.

Another time we were in a beer garden with a playground and a dog ran in and terrorised all the kids, nobody did a thing. Except me, I marched it out on its hind legs.

When I was a kid I was playing on a beach and stood in a cold dog turd which squelched between my toes.

A couple of years ago on a run, a dog jumped out of a car boot and chased me aggressively, and I was forced to yell in its face and use some abhorrent language.

So I would have no qualms at all eradicating all dogs from existence. A dog has never ever given me any kind of positive experience. The world would be a far more pleasant place with them all gone.

Stepfordian · 17/05/2025 19:14

I had to call the police about an aggressive pit bull type dog that used to come out of its owners driveway in our rural village and bark and jump at me, the second time it happened it tried to get in my child’s pram, I couldn’t get around it as there was only one pavement next to a 50 mile an hour road so I had to scream until its owner appeared. The police woman told me she’d been out to talk to the owner and ‘he’s a lovely dog’ I was so fucking angry, if it’s got to the point I’m calling the police I don’t want to be fobbed off with ‘he’s a lovely dog’

They're not "dog hating posts" they are "some dog owners are cunts posts".

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 17/05/2025 19:48

If dog owners started acting responsibly and realise that many many people do not want their smelly, germ breath dogs invading personal space then there would be fewer posts!

The fact people keep posting demonstrates that it's still a wide issue.

I don't hate dogs, I just don't understand everyone's need to refuse to recognise they are not furry babies. And, shock horror, we don't all find dogs cute and adorable and want to have them in our space.

😂don't you criticise my baby, he's a softie! No trouble in Clark's when I was trying on shoes. Just sat on a high shelf, looking for prey.

There’s a woman who comes into our local Asda with her little parrotin a little harness who sits on her shoulder.

Not something you see everyday but he’s very cute and friendly ConfusedGrin

MaisieMouse87 · 17/05/2025 19:57

Exactly. And in my defence I've been on here about 10 years and this is my first dog thread. If the woman had said a simple "sorry" I'd have been less arsed. But when you've got a kid whining for a drink and you've just had to throw away a perfectly good drink, in the moment I was pissed off! Sorry, was meant to quote MooseandSquirrel.

A lot of them are probably lockdown dogs that were never trained or socialised properly.

SherlocksHome · 17/05/2025 20:10

I absolutely HATE when owners let their dogs come up to my dog when they’re both on a lead. They literally block the path and I make it quite obvious we just want to get past “oh don’t worry, Fido just wants to say hello”. I couldn’t give a flying fuck what Fido wants. My dog is frightened of other dogs. Your dog is on a lead. The actual thing designed to allow you to control it. Bloody control it!!!!!

MiloMinderbinder925 · 17/05/2025 20:22

Id just made a picnic including a pot of potato salad which I was looking forward to. I took it all out and a dog came bounding over, stuck his foot in the potato salad and licked some of the other items which had to be thrown away. So adorable 😍

Sweet! I wonder if I could get a harness for Thor? He probably wouldn't like it, tbh.

This isn’t a dog hating thread - it’s a useless, inconsiderate, annoying dog owner criticising thread. There’s a difference.

TheOtherSide21 · 17/05/2025 20:32

Irresponsible owners exist.

On the same vein that irresponsible parents do too. I had my puppy in the park today (on a semi long lead) doing recall and patience work out the way and at least five loose children came out of their way and made a beeline for him. Some unsupervised, some within direct sight of parents who made no attempt to stop them. If I moved, the followed, no adult appeared to retrieve them. Of course I don’t mind people talking to him if they ask and let me get his attention on me first… but the same folk who let rogue kids run up will be the first folk to kick off if he jumps up and scratches / bites their kids.

Of course they would. Not one of those children would bite your dog.

Ah, yes, I forget that threads on Mumsnet equate to empirical evidence. Silly me!

Of course they're not empirical evidence, what a ridiculous thing to say. But they can be a useful barometer for people's opinions on a topic. And I think the prevailing feeling amongst both responsible dog owners and people without dogs is that there are too many shit dog owners about. The prevailing feeling amongst shit dog owners is that they have impunity and the world should revolve around their feral, untrained dog.

KarminaBurana · 17/05/2025 20:40

I'm not sure why dog owners come on these threads and compare children unfavourably to dogs? There is no comparison. It's odd.

FuglyBitch · 17/05/2025 20:41

Useless dog owners make us hate dogs

MrsCarson · 17/05/2025 20:49

Sick of irresponsible people. Bloody idiots letting them run round fields of Ewes with lambs has tainted my views of dog owners
