Strangers who think we all love their dog

I'm a bit pissed off and need a rant. Sitting on the park with my kids, we had a large bottle of water nearly full, next to us on the grass. The top was off as one of the kids had just had some. The park is a large field and we were not near anyone else. We were minding our business.
These two women walked past with a dog on a lead. I didn't expect them to get as close as they did. They came literally right up to us. The dog (on the lead) came between me and the kids and licked the rim of the water bottle. One of the women did a tinkly laugh and I said " oh no" in an annoyed tone and told one of my kids that the water would have to go in the bin now. They just walked off grinning and I heard them say something like " imagine being like that over a dog."
I did not say anything but got up and threw it in the bin. If they'd said sorry it would have been alright or if the dog was off the lead I would have been annoyed still. But the way they actively led it over to us and allowed it to do that, then laughed about it. Aibu for being annoyed? It's not even really about the water. It's about having personal space invaded needlessly when I'm minding my own business by people who are nosy and need to see what I'm doing. And partly people with dogs who think it's acceptable because the dog likes people making a fuss of it. By the way I actually like dogs and have 2 but I have never allowed them to do this and actively keep them away from people in public.

Ah, yes, I forget that threads on Mumsnet equate to empirical evidence. Silly me!

They equate to popular and valid concerns. If you believe otherwise, that's fine, but you'll probably have come across bad dog ownership yourself.

Nah…poor vulture management, though, plenty of that about😉

Ooh, there hasn’t been a dog-hating thread for at least two and a half hours now…thank god one has appeared!

Its not a dog hating thread.
People know its not a dogs fault if their owners are wankers.
Its a thread about the owners.

😂don't you criticise my baby, he's a softie! No trouble in Clark's when I was trying on shoes. Just sat on a high shelf, looking for prey.

ButterCrackers · 17/05/2025 15:14

They should have offered to replace the water (if there was a shop/cafe nearby) or at least apologised.

Yes, exactly. It's obviously about the bad owners. The OP even says she's got dogs of her own so presumably doesn't hate dogs!

A dog kept running up to a friend and I whilst we were eating our picnic in the park a few evenings ago. At first the owner did come and grab him after failed attempts at recall but a few minutes later it happened again - we were met with a half hearted ‘oh he’s fine, he won’t touch you’. I shoved and shooed the dog away once he started trying to eat our food - the owner was horrified and acted like we were the ones in the wrong. As a dog owner myself I told her that once is an accident, twice is taking the fucking piss and to learn to control her own dog in public places. She wasn’t pleased 🤣

This exact scenario happened to me in London. Sitting having a picnic with my baby and toddler (at the time) and this dog came running over and was amongst the food tucking in. Luckily we had finished!

Anyway this posh woman came running saying “You didn’t give Teddy chicken bones did you as that can be dangerous for dog”

I was furious at the utter lack of respect for us, the lack of responsibility on her part to control her dog and the audacity of her entitlement to think my main concern was her dog! Absolute lunatic.

Mymanyellow · 17/05/2025 15:21

Just got back from the park. Dogs everywhere, fair enough it’s a park for all. There was a cricket match going on and this flipping dog kept chasing the ball. It was funny first couple of times but the owners did nothing just sat and watched.

Oh no ….. I was once sat on a bench eating lunch and a friendly dog came to say hello.
I like dogs so was fine about it.
Suddenly, the dog opened his jaws and clamped down on half of my remaining lunch
The owner (a bloke) was mortified and apologised.
I was more shocked the dog actually wanted to eat my lunch (very healthy - mainly vegetables).
It just proves dogs will eat anything- well this dogs.
I’m always very protective of my food now if I see a dog at lunch time.

Yeah I've noticed 😆

This is a dog owner hating thread.

There is nothing fundamentally or intrinsically wrong with dogs. Many owners otoh leave a lot to be desired. There are far too many dog owners who shouldn't be in charge of a goldfish.

I have the highest scorn for people who fail their dogs with lack of training.

I also hate people who leave dog poo where it lands.

So would the vulture, I think they keep all the meat behind glass doors now.

Too hot to take my dogs out, avoid parks where kids are like the plague.

MaisieMouse87 · 17/05/2025 15:27

The dog wasn't out of control, it was thirsty. I personally think it was too hot for it to be out but that's beside the point. It was the attitude of the women. I don't like strangers with or without dogs getting up in my grill for no good reason. They did not need to walk right up to me and have the leashed dog walk though the circle I and my kids were sat in on the grass. The dog wouldn't have been able to lick my bottle if they had just walked a few yards away.

I believe we've identified a few irresponsible and incorrigible dog owners here on this thread.

Not if you're bothered by a dog whilst minding your own business. Like trying on shoes.

Thisshirtisonfire · 17/05/2025 15:41

I really dislike pet dogs.. or maybe it's not that I dislike them as I understand they are innocent animals.. I think it's the entitlement of owners I dislike.
Fine have a dog if you want one... but assuming that it's "normal" and people who aren't that into it are the strange ones, is unhinged. Yet there's this expectation that everyone accommodate dogs. Even more than they accommodate children! Despite kids being a biological fact of human existence whereas pet dogs are completely unnatural personal choices.
I feel quite sad for those dogs. Some people seem decent owners who understand that a dog has different needs from a human.. but you get these owners taking these poor stressed dogs into cafes etc, carting them about in little outfits like they are human babies. Thinking everyone should act like they are human beings and just find it amusing if the dog jumps on them or licks them or whatever.

I've got 3 kids who I love very much and I expect them to be treated with respect when out and about but I would never in a million years let them lick a stranger or jump on a stranger.. and if they made a tonne of noise (beyond being a newborn) I'd be removing them from the environment. If they touched someone else's property I'd be having stern words with them.

Why on earth do people think it's acceptable to let dogs do any of this?

FanofLeaves · 17/05/2025 15:48

There was this dog yapping everyone’s ear off on in a cafe recently. Every time someone entered, yapping. Walking past, yapping. Noise from the coffee machine, set it off yapping. Loudly. Was so bloody annoying.

I was with my toddler- now if he couldn’t behave himself in a cafe and was creating a disturbance to other customers, I would ask for takeaway containers and we would leave and go and sit in the park instead.

Seems no one expected the same from the owner of this badly behaved dog. Why are they indulged so much?

Custark · 17/05/2025 15:51

I was walking on a narrow path on moorland recently with my 90 year old frail mother. Suddenly a big dog barrelled towards us, I had no idea if it was going to jump up. It did run past but then on way back knocked into my mum.

It wasn’t in the owners sight and there is plenty of of open moorland for the dog to run in. I wasn’t confrontational when we came face to face with the owners, just said my mum was scared of dogs, and my mum said it had bumped her, clearly shaken.

The useless twat of an owner just grumpily said ‘oh well this is a dog area. I’ll hold her while you go past. She’s a puppy.’ No apology for not controlling his dog. I think he was actually expecting fawning comments about what a beautiful dog it was (it was, but read your audience).
