AIBU To be a little bit proud of myself? (OU degree)

Dr13Hadley · 16/05/2025 20:56

This morning at 6.50am I submitted my final assignment towards my degree with the Open University. Started in 2019 two months before COVID kicked off. I’ve studied part time whilst holding down a full time job in the NHS and dealing with all the usual crap that comes with family life with two primary aged boys. Then half way through I was formally diagnosed with ADHD. I’m pretty damn chuffed with myself considering I usually start stuff and never finish it.

DH doesn’t really get it. He never went to uni and has done very well career wise. He’s also neurotypical so doesn’t understand what a bloody big achievement it is for me.

So AIBU to sit here feeling a little bit pleased with myself?! I have extremely low self esteem and it’s an unusual feeling! By my calculations, if this last assignment goes reasonably well, I should be on track for a 2:1.

Yoi are being unreasonable to be a little bit proud of yourself… you should be a HUGE bit proud of yourself!! Massive congratulations OP! That’s a brilliant achievement 👏👏👏

FlowerUser · 25/01/2026 10:55

Have you got a date for your graduation @Dr13Hadley ?

I hope you're still feeling really chuffed with your achievements..♥️

Mischance · 25/01/2026 10:59

Well done!

I had to smile as this brought back memories. My mum missed out on educational opportunities and at the age of 60 (same year as her ruby wedding anniversary) she gained an OU degree. My dad thought it was a total waste of her time and could not see any point in it at all - and was not backward in saying so! We gave up trying to explain.....

RisingVamp · 25/01/2026 11:00

Of course you’re not unreasonable. That’s an amazing achievement and you should rightly feel proud! So much hard work, perseverance and dedication. Congratulations - treat yourself to something. You deserve it!

FlowerUser · 25/01/2026 14:42

Actually @Dr13Hadley, I see we didn't get an update on your final classification. It's fine if you don't want to share, but I.do hope you got the 2:1 you were in line for.

Dr13Hadley · 25/01/2026 16:47

Thanks everyone! I only just missed out on a 2:1
so got a 2:2 which I’m still proud of but was a little disappointed. I’ve not got a date yet for graduation as the dates closest to the course ending sold out in minutes and I’m not entirely sure I even want to do it.

I did the degree for me, to prove that I wasn’t thick and I could start, finish and achieve something which I’ve done. I am considering doing further study though!

A massive well done to you, OP. I also have adhd and completed my master's degree alongside a full time job...I know how bloody hard it is. Congratulations!

Congratulations, it’s a great feeling. I did an OU degree and graduated in 2023 with a 2:1.

What did you do it in?

misscockerspaniel · 25/01/2026 19:51

Many congratulations 🍾(I got my LLB (Hons) whilst working fulltime. Studying was a nightmare, it felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall most of the time!).

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 25/01/2026 20:00

Brilliant achievement , well done you….i worked for the OU for 17 years ( operational not academic area) and one of my most memorable, heartwarming and uplifting days ever there was being part of a designated team at the Graduation ceremony at Ely Cathedral….i was part of the “ Gowning Up” team and for many hours helped new Graduates into their gowns….the hugs, tears of joy and stories of hope and inspiration will stay with me forever…..after we had done our bit we were allowed to sit in the Cathedral and watch the ceremony….just amazing ….wonderful….happy days….and as I said at the beginning, Well done you my lovely…..I’ve seen the various course materials and they are certainly not easy ….fabulous achievement xxxx

What did you do it in?

congratulations to you too!

I did BA Hons in Health and Social Care. I work in the NHS so can use it in my role. If I do further study though I’d like to do history or English as they are subjects I really enjoy!

@Dr13Hadley

Same degree. I don’t work in the sector anymore though. Well done again and enjoy your graduation day 👏 .

Moll2020 · 25/01/2026 22:10

Congratulations Op, you should feel very pleased with yourself. I completed my degree whilst working full time and with children. If you get offered a graduation ceremony please go and celebrate. 👏🎓

FlowerUser · 25/01/2026 23:32

Congratulations on getting your degree. I also did my undergraduate and Master's with the OU and loved it. But it is hard to do while you're working.

You absolutely have achieved a great deal, and you are definitely not stupid. I'm so happy for you. ♥️

StickChildNumberTwo · 25/01/2026 23:40

Very well done! I have more degrees than any person needs, but all of them done pre-kids and not while juggling a full time job. I can't imagine how you've managed it all, you should be VERY proud of yourself! Hope you get a proper celebration.

WearyAuldWumman · 25/01/2026 23:51

Well done @Dr13Hadley .

tumbletoast · 26/01/2026 00:01

Congratulations! You should be very proud of yourself, that's a great accomplishment. The OU is a tough route to take.
