AIBU To be a little bit proud of myself? (OU degree)

This morning at 6.50am I submitted my final assignment towards my degree with the Open University. Started in 2019 two months before COVID kicked off. I’ve studied part time whilst holding down a full time job in the NHS and dealing with all the usual crap that comes with family life with two primary aged boys. Then half way through I was formally diagnosed with ADHD. I’m pretty damn chuffed with myself considering I usually start stuff and never finish it.

DH doesn’t really get it. He never went to uni and has done very well career wise. He’s also neurotypical so doesn’t understand what a bloody big achievement it is for me.

So AIBU to sit here feeling a little bit pleased with myself?! I have extremely low self esteem and it’s an unusual feeling! By my calculations, if this last assignment goes reasonably well, I should be on track for a 2:1.

Picklepoppypolly · 16/05/2025 21:03

Well done! It is a huge achievement to finish a degree, especially around other commitments.
I did the same with the OU and it was so good to complete it and get a good grade. Enjoy your graduation 🍾

Thank you everyone, I think I’ve got something in my eye 🥹 I’ve never really gone on about it, most of my friends and colleagues don’t even know I’ve been doing it, only my close family. I guess I always had it in the back of my mind that I’d give up at some point. I can’t quite believe I’ve managed it. Feel a bit giddy!

Be ready for a period of not knowing what to do now the demands are over, I felt totally bereft after my OU degree finished! I'd started mine when the children were pre-school, I wasn't working and I was bored. It was good for the children to see me not just as their Mum, they told their friends about Mum's homework and would play nicely if I needed to work during the day.
Congratulations by the way!

GeraldThePufferSponge · 16/05/2025 21:04

That’s absolutely fantastic and you have every right to be thoroughly proud of yourself - congratulations!

ClassicalQueen · 16/05/2025 21:07

Congratulations! I always think OU degrees show an extra level of commitment and dedication given most people work full time whilst completing them.

TheNumberfaker · 16/05/2025 21:07

YANBU at all. You are awesome! Getting a degree whilst working and with kids is so hard you are right to feel super proud of yourself!

You are right to be proud of yourself. Please make sure you attend a graduation and get photographed in your gown. The OU graduation ceremonies are very relaxed and family friendly.

Congratulations - I hope you're extremely proud of yourself!

Tortielady · 16/05/2025 21:42

Congratulations 🎊 👏 🍾 Getting a degree is always a big deal. You have even more of a reason to be pleased with yourself, given the hurdles you had to get over. Your DH might not get it, because he experiences the world as a place set up for NT people (like him) while you need things he can dispense with (like your education.)

Enjoy some downtime, but don't be surprised if the urge to do a postgraduate course starts to nibble at you. I thought I'd had enough, then I found myself glowering covetously when I saw people with textbooks in cafes. The level and field wasn't important - it could have been GCSE Maths - I envied them the process of learning.

Dr13Hadley · 16/05/2025 21:55

@TortieladyI’ve already had my eye on a Masters! I think I’ll have a year or two break first though 😁 I love learning too, something I’m glad I’ve passed on to DC. Oldest has just done his SATs and he loved it 😂

Hugely impressed, I love the idea but I don’t have the work ethic. Brilliant of you getting this complete with so much other stuff going on. Feel tremendously proud!
