Women alone in london

Motomum23 · 16/05/2025 13:46

So I'm taking my 13 year old daughter to London in August to see blackpink - she's excited - I'm looking forward to some 1 to 1 time with her. We live in rural Cornwall and my husband is convinced I ought to be packing pepper spray and an attack alarm for our 1 evening using the tubes.... please someone tell me he's being absurd and plenty of women traverse London alone these days - my sister went to King's and I'd often visit her by train and we would enjoy ourselves in the city when I was 15 but apparently I'm insane because now its so much more dangerous!!!!

I don’t get it. Not even watching the news paints London in such a bad light.

I think some people are just naturally more paranoid and hyperbolic than others.

But it’s weirder in this case because the paranoid DH is a Londoner!

I’ve watched enough episodes of Vera to be more terrified of rural Northumberland, apparently all the UK murders happen there.

I (F) live in "Causton" (Midsomer Murders area.)

Apparently "Radio 4 estimated that the County of Midsomer had a murder rate of 3.2 per 100,000, roughly twice that of Metropolitan London."

I'm still alive, and go into London regularly. Plus I worked there for decades. Just be sensible.

FFS, why are people so weird about London? I’ve lived here for over 20 years, during which time I have travelled alone on the tube hundreds of times and have never once had any issues. Millions of us live here and go about our business every day without being assaulted. Tell him to get a grip.

It’s true, people are quite strange about London (or That London).

onestepfurtheragain · 16/05/2025 15:25

I’ve lived in London for over 30 yrs and raised my two kids here. Have never had any issue. It’s a great city!

DragonCity · 16/05/2025 15:25

I'm a country bumpkin, but I feel quite safe in London either alone or with one of the (grown up) kids. I feel far safer in London, than Birmingham or even Manchester oddly enough.

It’s true. I grew up close to there. I was never scared growing up but rural America terrifies me. Just something about how big it is and being very easy to just get taken. Think along the lines of where True Detective was filmed.

A bit like born again non drinkers, preaching about the evils of alcohol

kirinm · 16/05/2025 15:29

Assuming you don’t plan to be walking the streets at 3am, I think you’ll probably be okay! Even if you do end up walking the streets at 3am, you’ll be okay too.

Motomum23 · 16/05/2025 14:11

Yes I actually think he might think you are all armed these days... stange how much of a country bumpkin he's turned into since we moved from a city.

I would find such stupidity very unattractive, if I'm honest.

I visit London annually on my own as a wheelchair user (used to live there for years). I feel safer there than in the Scandinavian city I live in now, especially in the evenings. And I don't book into Central London hotels.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 16/05/2025 15:32

I live in a biggish midlands city, I feel safe in my city up to 11 ish at night when I become more aware of potential risks as there a fewer people around. Love London do a couple of overnights on my own each year just because there is so much to see and do. London at night is about the same level of busy ness as my city in the day which makes me feel safe. Most tube lines (unless on the edges of the network) are well used until late in the evening.

untilido · 16/05/2025 15:35

He doesn’t want you to go; does he?

Radiatorvalves · 16/05/2025 15:36

Honestly it’s fine. But don’t walk around with your phones on display. That’s asking for trouble. And that’s even in “safe” busy areas during the day.

Stay centrally and stay in the crowds.

Why? What do you think happens in London suburbia? In the terrors of zone 3?

I thought they were in Cornwall?

Edit: oh I just saw that bit!

Well there was another thread recently with a PP sayinf they knew two men looking to leave London because they were worried their wives and newborns would be shot in the head walking around!

Shmoigel · 16/05/2025 15:40

I live in Wales and travel to London for work. I was there on my own this week and it felt safer than my home town at night.
I would say that you need a phone lanyard.

If you need to get your phone out for directions then you have it attached to you.
I have the newest iphone so did feel a bit conscious on the underground previously that people were looking at it so the lanyard gives you some peace of mind.

Cyclebabble · 16/05/2025 15:43

I work in London a couple of days a week and socialise there often. The tube is very safe as is London generally. I always ensure that I have secured my bags (as I would in any big city) and it is a good idea when travelling with a 15 year old to have activated find me on both yours and their phones, but otherwise there is a lot to enjoy in London.

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/05/2025 15:43

This thread is hilarious. I’m typing this as a lone woman in a rough area of inner London right now. I’ll try waving my phone around but I’ll have to put my mandatory Uzi or machete down first so I have a free hand.

If I was married to an idiot like that, I’d want to shoot them in the head too. I think the threat may be closer to home. 😜

Your husband is mad. From what I’ve seen of Cornwall it has a much bigger drug problem than London!!

Yeah, I mean my little Cornish village has a couple of heroin addicts (of course we know all about them. Everybody knows everything about everyone!), and there's been at least one brutal murder in living memory, plus the last man hanged in Britain was hanged for killing a local farmer, so....🤷‍♀️

Start sending him links to all the grisly crimes that pop up in Cornwall Live on a regular basis, and invite him to consider that wrong'uns are rare, but everywhere.

Here in rough zone 5 we get a free uzi delivered with each year's council tax bill. I might take it on a stroll to the corner shop in a bit, although I should probably wait until DP gets home. After all, it's the wild west out there.

HelloPossible · 16/05/2025 15:53

Another Londoner here saying it’s fine travelling around, don’t underestimate how many tourists there are, it can get really busy. I have never seen a phone snatch either although being careful with belongings is essential even inside and on transport.

To reassure yourself there are loads of YouTube videos of tourists filming their trips which I love watching and Londoner Hannah Ricketts has a nice YouTube channel I watch for inspiration of places to go. She really does make London look good.

ItTook9Years · 16/05/2025 15:57

I’m there every other week for work. Never ever had any trouble.

Have been taking my daughter since she was tiny. She’s now 14 and I regularly take her. She’s had no issues either.

When we lived in London, PIL would be constantly calling DH telling him how dangerous it was there. FIL wore a money belt when he came to visit. In 10 years neither one of us had a scrap of issue or felt unsafe (and we were in central London the day of the 7/7 bombings). PIL just couldn’t get their Yorkshire heads around us not getting mugged on the daily or needing to wear full suits of armour on the tube.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/05/2025 16:00

I often take a day out in London on my own.
Last year I treated myself to a weekend in a hotel. I went out for dinner in the evening and walked around the shops/cafes.
It was fine.

Outrageistheopiateofthemasses · 16/05/2025 16:02

He is being absurd
Came from a lovely trip away yesterday, by myself. It was fine.
Certain areas at night, sure, but that's true anywhere.
