Women alone in london

Motomum23 · 16/05/2025 13:46

So I'm taking my 13 year old daughter to London in August to see blackpink - she's excited - I'm looking forward to some 1 to 1 time with her. We live in rural Cornwall and my husband is convinced I ought to be packing pepper spray and an attack alarm for our 1 evening using the tubes.... please someone tell me he's being absurd and plenty of women traverse London alone these days - my sister went to King's and I'd often visit her by train and we would enjoy ourselves in the city when I was 15 but apparently I'm insane because now its so much more dangerous!!!!

Your husband's a fool. It's totally fine. You will be perfectly safe.

Pepper spray is illegal in the UK, by the way. If you were carrying it, you would be considered the dangerous one!

EDIT: Sorry, just seen your update re pepper spray!

BeTwinklyKhakiPanda · 16/05/2025 14:19

Have been a single woman on the tube and buses in London for 25 years now, never felt the need to carry pepper spray.

I do worry about small coastal towns in Cornwall though after watching all those murders in Beyond Paradise. Tho maybe that was Devon

BunnyLake · 16/05/2025 14:20

You can always carry one of those pocket alarms if you want to be on the safe side (I have three that I keep in different jacket pockets, never had to use them so far). I’d imagine there’ll be a ton of people around anyway if it’s BlackPink.

Crunchymum · 16/05/2025 14:21

I hope he hasn't been putting this nonsense in your DD's head?

Quite, i think that was filmed in looe?

VictoriaEra · 16/05/2025 14:33

I do these trips a lot, sometimes alone, sometimes with daughter. I always feel safe due to the amount of people.

I spend a fair bit of time alone in central London and have never felt anything but safe.

Same here. I've walked back alone to hotels using well lit main streets and never felt unsafe.

Icanttakethisanymore · 16/05/2025 14:35

Spent my whole adult life walking around London, often on my own, at all times of day and night. Never felt unsafe or needed to pepper spray anyone 😂

I travel into and out of Central London twice a week and I don't think I've ever felt unsafe. Genuinely. Even when I stay for drinks and get a later train home.

I also had a girls day with my dd last year and we're doing another one early June. We can't wait! Have a lovely time, op. 😊

As a very small female Londoner... I find Cornwall much scarier! Forest of Dean is weird too..

Turmerictolly · 16/05/2025 14:44

There are millions of women who live and work in London! Personally I’ve never had any issues and feel safe centrally as it’s always busy.

ForeverPombear · 16/05/2025 14:45

I've walked around London as a lone female hundreds of times. I've only had an issue with one other person and that was another female who was very obviously mentally ill.

nearly 5 million.

FemEro · 16/05/2025 14:51

I don't think it's ridiculous and it could actually save your life or your health. That said, it's illegal and I actually once spent the night in lockup due to being caught (bad luck, police searched my car because of where I'd parked). I haven't carried since, but there have been occasions where I felt really threatened and wished I did.

bookworm14 · 16/05/2025 14:52

FFS, why are people so weird about London? I’ve lived here for over 20 years, during which time I have travelled alone on the tube hundreds of times and have never once had any issues. Millions of us live here and go about our business every day without being assaulted. Tell him to get a grip.

nearly 5 million.

Lots more than that if you include those who commute.

ButterCrackers · 16/05/2025 14:52

Stay centrally and stay in the crowds.

GreyLion · 16/05/2025 15:00

I have been on many London trips alone, for the day and overnight stays and never had any bother.

JHound · 16/05/2025 15:11

I live in London alone and go out about alone. As do a tonne of women I know.

Your husband sounds a little “over the top.”

I don’t get it. Not even watching the news paints London in such a bad light.

I think some people are just naturally more paranoid and hyperbolic than others.

Cynic17 · 16/05/2025 15:17

You husband is ridiculous, OP.
I often stay in London on my own..... go out at night, take the Tube, walk at night, go to restaurants etc etc. My husband wouldn't dream of questioning me - he is just happy that I enjoy myself.
Not to mention the millions of women who actually live in London and go about their days perfectly normally.
The Tube is busy at night - there is zero threat.
He should not be teaching your daughter this nonsense that women are wilting violets who need to be protected! Whereas you can teach her that women can enjoy their lives and don't need a man to chaperone or protect them. Let alone alarms & pepper spray, FFS.

Geordie01 · 16/05/2025 15:18

WhySoManySocks · 16/05/2025 13:54

I’ve watched enough episodes of Vera to be more terrified of rural Northumberland, apparently all the UK murders happen there.

Can confirm 🤣

Youstolemygoddamnhouse · 16/05/2025 15:19

Spent time in London alone for work. Walked the streets back to my hotel in the evening and felt fine. However, did get a few men coming up to me trying to speak in the daytime but I did not engage. You have crime everywhere, we just hear about it more in the news as London is the capital. Also I think if some man was going to attack he would choose a woman who is alone rather than two people who could fight back. Plus people usually step in if a child is involved. Just be extra cautious

LottieLamaz · 16/05/2025 15:20

I live in London and walk around alone am the time and feel perfectly safe. I would definitely take a pepper spray with me to rural Cornwall though 😆

Atarin · 16/05/2025 15:21

Your husband is mad. From what I’ve seen of Cornwall it has a much bigger drug problem than London!!
