They’ve attached a GIANT fence… to MY fence !!

Exactly that !

Neighbour behind has a 6 foot old wooden fence.
I have a 6 foot fairly new 6 foot fence of the concrete posts and board variety.
There is a 2 foot ‘No man’s land’ in between that the builders of my house/estate left when they erected this perimeter fence (we are on edge of development).

Came home today to find neighbours erecting a fence with 12 foot posts and 10 foot panels ! It’s flipping huge !

On Inspection, I can see he’s attached said monstrosity to my nice fence by drilling holes in my concrete posts, and attaching wooden battens which form a framework with metal brackets that bridge the 2 foot gap !

I asked him to take it off my nice fence - he turned his drill on and turned his back to me and carried on. It’s now fully installed.

I’ll try and upload photos for you all to appreciate his workmanship.

AIBU to contact Council ?
AIBU to saw the metal brackets half way ?

His house looks high so it could be from his side that the fence is 6ft high? . If I'm incorrect then absolutely report to the council for planning enforcement actions.

The council won't however do anything about the damage caused to you fence.

Daisydiary · 15/05/2025 20:16

You could always take your fence down and watch his collapse 🤣

narcASD · 15/05/2025 20:17

It looks ridiculous but I would be more angry at them attaching it to my fence! So absolutely entitled (and illegal)

I love this idea.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 15/05/2025 20:20

@Finetoday can I just say, aside from the no mans land space being stolen, how high is the fence from his side? given that your side looks a lot lower. I am saying this because we have a dividing retaining brick wall between us and a neighbour which must be 5 feet high. this wall only come up to about 1 foot in height in our garden and fencing has been added to the top of the wall so it is only 3 feet high on our side. we could quite legitimately add another 3 feet to out side making a total of 11 feet high

Finetoday · 15/05/2025 20:10

Oh my word that’s a good point !
The posts went in today the same time as the panels - there was no digging or concrete going on !!

This is more worrying that anything else, if it the posts are not dug in then the whole thing is held up solely by your fence and is a huge (no pun intended) hazard.

I wouldn’t go anywhere near your fence until that is confirmed. It could all come down at any time, and literally could kill someone.

GravyBoots · 15/05/2025 20:24

Omg, he needs to compensate you for damaging your property, and unless you're on a massive slope, then that fence is way too high.

Good luck!

MrsBruar · 15/05/2025 20:27

I'm sure others have said, but the height and the fact that he has attached to your fence is illegal, the council planning team, plus a separate complaint to your council's antisocial behaviour team in the morning.

StrongTea · 15/05/2025 20:28

Be very difficult to paint your fence now.

Genevieva · 15/05/2025 20:28

The council will tell you to speak to him yourself first, but you may as well get the ball rolling.

Stripyzebrabra · 15/05/2025 20:29

Park your car on his drive or attach something to his front fence/wall/door

PsychoHotSauce · 15/05/2025 20:30

They've really damaged your post, look at the chunk that's fallen away!

They’ve attached a GIANT fence… to MY fence !!

This is great.
‘oh, just thinking of putting a hedge there instead’

maddening · 15/05/2025 20:31

A few things to.get going on tomorrow- calling the council, also find out who owns the land he is taking, see if you have legal cover on your home insurance - anyone this brazen will need to be taken down.

Yanbu op - I feel enraged just thinking about it - you must be incandescent!

Gloriia · 15/05/2025 20:31

As others have said you are not alowed to attach anything to a neighbour’s fence without their permission.
Ring up your planning dep, send them these images he'll be told to remove it. Good luck. What a prat!

TheHerboriste · 15/05/2025 20:31

I'd be calling the police ASAP to get it logged, for starters.

Was it the neighbour or a contractor who turned on his drill and ignored you?

justasking111 · 15/05/2025 20:32

The insurance company won't like this

Lolopolo · 15/05/2025 20:32

Your neighbour is an absolute fence cocklodger!! Get that bullshit reported to the council asap!!

The police will not get involved it's a civil matter. Council will sort it, eventually (!) they aren't speedy though it has to he said.

Whyherewego · 15/05/2025 20:33

Remove your fence. His won't last long lol

Londonrach1 · 15/05/2025 20:36

Contact the council but wow. Looks like your fence has been damaged

NamechangeJunebaby · 15/05/2025 20:36

DrPrunesqualer · 15/05/2025 20:12

You only have a right to light to a habitable room that doesn’t have other windows.
A garden doesn’t count

What about the rooms on that vista of the house?

Gymnopedie · 15/05/2025 20:40

Looks like his garden is about 4ft higher than yours?

That photo looks more like the original 6' fence (it's the same height as OP's), while he was attaching things to OP's fence and before he put up his new fence. I think he's standing on stepladders to get high enough to reach the top of the fence for his woodwork.

Can I install my own fence panels with my own separate posts if, say, my neighbour’s fence is 4 feet tall, but I want to put up a 6-foot fence?

Charmofgoldfinch · 15/05/2025 20:44

Enforcement office at the council. Take photos (date stamped if you can). A video showing a walk down the fence is also useful. Include any photos you have of fence before he built that monstrosity. Do your deeds show your boundary (and also presumably his)? You could also purchase his land boundary from land registry for about £7 to show what land he owns and that he’s done a land grab.
