AIBU to think mumsnet needs a 'Vent' board?

It seems to me that a large proportion of posts in AIBU are from people who know they're not being unreasonable, but want to vent about something annoying that has happened so that everyone can commiserate with them about how unreasonable someone else has been. This leads to an irritating kind of faux naïveté from posters claiming not to know whether they have been unreasonable when no sane person could conclude that they had been. A 'vent' board would solve this issue by letting the obviously maligned rant without having to pretend it's their first day on earth.

Suppose that’s what ‘chat’ is for? I think people choose AIBU for traffic as that’s the one people usually make trend.

paranoiaofpufflings · 14/05/2025 10:57

A bit like your own post here?
Many of the AIBU posts as you say are not really wanting to know whether they are being unreasonable, often opening with “posting here for traffic”, when the poster could easily have just used another existing board - relationships, family, parenting, work, etc.

I can’t get too worked up about it.

MoistVonL · 14/05/2025 10:59

I mean, you’re using AIBU for this when it belongs in Site Stuff…

I’m not sure by your own example that having a board would mean it actually gets used.

Maybe AIBU should just be renamed to something a bit less specific , just the board that people use the most

I always thought AIBU was the equivalent of AITA on other forums 😂

JaneJeffer · 14/05/2025 11:31

On the Vent board what kind of responses would be allowed?

I don't think mumsnet really polices whether a response is 'allowed' (beyond the generic talk guidelines stuff)

So it would still be AIBU in disguise. A Vent board should only have positive replies IMO

Yes! Great idea.

I thought that was why AIBU was created in the first place? That was a long time ago; a lot of people (posters/members) were against it and said that AIBU would take over and people would only come to MN just for that and MN would lose all the things that made it a close community - all the advice and kindness and support. MN would have lost a lot of that anyway as the membership grew - there's a limit to how close and familiar an online community can be in terms of size.

Anyway, I think a venting board would just turn into an angry AIBU, but why not?

MN don't police the boards, readers report posts they think contraven MN rule of engagment. HQ then look at it and either agree or don't.

Agree with this PP - and also the OP. Also unless I've missed it, there's no introduction to Mumsnet or advice on your way around the boards. I found it confusing, and also annoying, when certain feature work on the website but not on the App (like notifications) when they used to work there before the last update. Acronyms could easily be pinned to the first page, too, instead of having to guess them or ask every single one you don't 'get' or understand.
