How do you deal with a manager who’s all performance and no substance?

Mine is constantly posturing - saying the “right” things in meetings, praising values like transparency and teamwork but behind the scenes, it’s chaos. Poor communication, passive-aggressive comments and never taking responsibility when things go wrong.

She’s great at managing up but everyone underneath is walking on eggshells. Has anyone dealt with this kind of manager before and how did you navigate it without losing your mind or your job?

You can either 1) bide your time and play the politics (cultivate good relationships with credible people at or above their level and give them insight into what's going on; takes time and skill), 2) put your head down, cultivate your life outside work and aspire to rhino skin, or 3) get the fuck out. I've generally chosen 3.
