To find the idea of a sausage roll for breakfast strange?

Am not sure if it's just me tbh, so happy to be told AIBU!

I was out for lunch with my sister and she was telling me that her daughter (who has SATs) is being given a special breakfast at school every day and their choice for the breakfast was either a sausage roll or for vegetarians a cheese roll (ie. Cheese in pastry). I think there was a vegan option too.

Maybe it's just me but I can't imagine having a sausage roll /cheese roll for breakfast. But then I guess a cooked breakfast is sausage and bacon etc and I guess you get things like danish pastries for breakfast.... I guess I just wasn't expecting it! It's nice of the school to do that for them though, apparently my niece was looking forward to it (she was just a bit confused by the choice of food too I think which is why my sister was telling me the story)

I suppose it gets a bit of protein into them in a single-serving way that can be eaten out of the hand without needing a plate, knife and fork etc?

I’d find that a bit odd. We always just did toast and waffles for our year six kids. If they’re not used to eating much at breakfast I’d worry that a full tummy would be distracting. Saying that, if it was greggs, I’d happily eat a sausage roll for breakfast.

It's nice of the school, also practical as it makes sure they're in on time and fed, while not requiring a lot of food preparation/cleaning after - important as the kitchen is in use throughout the day. It would be a right fanny-on trogging around with cereals, bowls etc, or even hundreds of slices of toast, and they can hardly cater for a full English for everyone.

I hate the idea of chocolate and sweet pastries at breakfast. So to me a sausage or cheese roll would be fine. I guess it's better than just offering toast and cereal. And they haven't the manpower/facilities to cook bacon/sausages etc then put them inside bread rolls?

I think it's nice if they enjoy it. It's meant to be special so they know they're not gonna be allowed Gregg's on a daily basis at 8am usually.

It's unusual but no weirder than a croissant or pain au chocolate which seems like dessert for breakfast, to me.

In fact when DH gets pastries for breakfast sometimes I have a sausage roll - more protein!

Oh yes I can see things like cereal would be a real faff! I'd just never thought of a sausage roll for breakfast Grin .

Pastries for breakfast, yes. Sausages for breakfast, yes. Sausages in pastry for breakfast - feels all wrong. My teens would love it though.

I know. And rationally it surely isn't any different, perhaps better, than sausages, or pastries, but it seems weird! I might have to experiment and try it Grin. I am not sure I could eat one every day for a week though (although do sats take the whole week? Mine aren't that age yet!)

Everyone is allowed treat sometimes surely? Is a sticky cinamon roll and a coffee any better for you? I don't know, but this is my ultimate treat breakfast! All of the time no, a treat, yes.

I had a sausage roll for breakfast once, I moved to the north and there was a miscommunication regarding bread products. Was tasty though.

Are you sure she means a pastry sausage roll and not sausage in a bread roll? My granddaughter's school is also providing breakfast for the children doing SATs and it includes a sausage sandwich.
But in any case even if it is a pasty wrapped sausage roll I don't suppose it's any different from sausage and bacon, toast danish pastries etc

Yes definitely pastry sausage roll, the alternative was a pastry cheese roll.

I agree, I don't know why it seemed so strange when a sausage in a bread roll would seem normal and isn't very different

Sausage in a roll (or a bacon or egg in a roll) is a pretty standard breakfast item.

I suppose you could look at the pastry as being similar to a buttered roll in nutritional terms - it’s flour and some fat (rubbed in, in the pastry, and spread on in the buttered roll) - and sausage rolls (in pastry) are easier to prepare and serve than a roll and sausage.

It’s not a perfect breakfast, but maybe it’s better than nothing or than sugary cereals.

Grim. I certainly wouldn't let my children eat a sausage roll for breakfast. And not during an important week like sats. They need quality food not UFP ground up pigs balls and fat.
