To find the idea of a sausage roll for breakfast strange?

Am not sure if it's just me tbh, so happy to be told AIBU!

I was out for lunch with my sister and she was telling me that her daughter (who has SATs) is being given a special breakfast at school every day and their choice for the breakfast was either a sausage roll or for vegetarians a cheese roll (ie. Cheese in pastry). I think there was a vegan option too.

Maybe it's just me but I can't imagine having a sausage roll /cheese roll for breakfast. But then I guess a cooked breakfast is sausage and bacon etc and I guess you get things like danish pastries for breakfast.... I guess I just wasn't expecting it! It's nice of the school to do that for them though, apparently my niece was looking forward to it (she was just a bit confused by the choice of food too I think which is why my sister was telling me the story)

Cheese isn't actually vegetarian - friendly since it has rennet in it (which comes from the cow's stomach.

Depends on the cheese.

Poonu · 12/05/2025 18:07

Mine have substantial breakfasts. They get up early. Sausage / cheese rolls sound fine

Sausages rolls are a huge hit in high school, avaliable from morons break onwards

"Morons break". If only they'd had a more nutritious start to the day it might be "geniuses break" Wink

Was that a typo? I mean, I know teens can be fairly idiotic but...

If the supermarket is specifically providing these as the veggie option, the cheese will be made with “vegetarian rennet”

My 12 year old often has a tuna and sweetcorn sandwich for breakfast, the other day he asked for soup which I found a bit odd but i think any food can be breakfast food

Oops def typo. But tbf iv called my teens worse

Where I am,kids will happily chow down on a spanikopita for a special breakfast. Spinach for breakfast seems odd to me still after 15 years here but there are some pluses (minus the greasy little hands afterwards....)

I think they are more like lemmings.....

YANBU and you are at the same time.
If it’s something you fancy and if it’s a treat then no problem.
My daughters school are giving the children who are sitting their GCSE’s waffles or pancakes for breakfast before their exams.
I don’t understand why this is a good idea. High in sugar and processed foods before a day of exams, it’s ridiculous.

Spidey66 · 12/05/2025 18:12

Are you sure it isn’t a sausage IN a roll rather than a sausage roll?

TheChosenTwo · 12/05/2025 18:13

The school I worked at offered this too, it was primarily a way to bribe the kids in to school on time and also ensuring they had had something, anything, for breakfast so they had more of a chance of concentrating.
I think the choices were sausage in a roll (so not quite a sausage roll!) meat or veggie, and there was fruit and from memory also some plain croissants. It was free to kids to use and we had a really good turn out for the years that I was there.
So it’s not unusual to me!

louderthan · 12/05/2025 18:14

Would you find it strange if it was a sausage sandwich/bap?

TryingToBeHelpful267 · 12/05/2025 18:15

They always had sausage rolls, pizza bread and toast available for breakfast and lunch in my secondary school 😂

Seems weird though as an adult.

Yes definitely, because her mum wasn't sure and checked with the school

Some people call a butty a roll. So a sausage / cheese roll could be a sausage sandwich / butty / batch - whatever people call them 😂

Had many a sausage roll breakfast in my youth.

My last permanent school had a breakfast club: cornflakes and milk most days; roll and bacon or roll and sausage on Fridays. Fridays were most popular.

Hayley1256 · 12/05/2025 18:18

I use to work with someone who would go to greggs on tje way to work and get a sausage roll sandwich 😅

leccybill · 12/05/2025 18:41

Oh I'd happily eat a sausage roll at any time of day or night!

Sherararara · 12/05/2025 18:45

Very common. Why do you think all the sausage rolls get sold out at Greggs by mid morning? Often have a sausage roll
if travelling and it’s an early start.

She checked with the school? Why on earth for?

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 12/05/2025 18:50

I do love a sausage roll.

Cheese isn't actually vegetarian - friendly since it has rennet in it (which comes from the cow's stomach.

A quick google shows that Sainsbury's, ASDA's, Marks', Tesco's, Co-op's and Morrisons' Cheese & Onion rolls are all marked suitable for vegetarians.

They use a rennet alternative and have been doing so since at least 1989 when I was buying cheese & onion pasties. Now, if you buy a fancy one that specifies Parmesan, they won't be because Parmesan has to have animal rennet, but the bog standard ones are absolutely vegetarian.

Notgreggs · 12/05/2025 18:54

Sherararara · 12/05/2025 18:46

She checked with the school? Why on earth for?

Because they had to pick their choice in advance and her daughter wasn't sure what to pick (or whether to have breakfast at home)
