To find the idea of a sausage roll for breakfast strange?

Am not sure if it's just me tbh, so happy to be told AIBU!

I was out for lunch with my sister and she was telling me that her daughter (who has SATs) is being given a special breakfast at school every day and their choice for the breakfast was either a sausage roll or for vegetarians a cheese roll (ie. Cheese in pastry). I think there was a vegan option too.

Maybe it's just me but I can't imagine having a sausage roll /cheese roll for breakfast. But then I guess a cooked breakfast is sausage and bacon etc and I guess you get things like danish pastries for breakfast.... I guess I just wasn't expecting it! It's nice of the school to do that for them though, apparently my niece was looking forward to it (she was just a bit confused by the choice of food too I think which is why my sister was telling me the story)

i used to buy a Greggs vegan sausage roll in my way to work if I hadn’t had time for breakfast. I never thought there was anything strange about it!

Cheese isn't actually vegetarian - friendly since it has rennet in it (which comes from the cow's stomach.

Most cheese in the U.K. IS vegetarian. NOT made with rennet. You have to watch
out for imported cheese.

I mean both pastries and sausages are pretty standard breakfast foods.

but I find it weird people think you can only eat specific things at specific times. It’s all food at the end of the day.

Disturbia81 · 12/05/2025 19:07

It’s kinda weird the constraints we put on different meals, like eating lasagne would be weird for breakfast. Why is it? 😂 But people love eating curry or pizza for breakfast from the night before. Sausage roll does seem like something later in the day but I wouldn’t say no!

shellyleppard · 12/05/2025 19:28

When my sons did SATs at school they had toast and croissant..... lucky ducks;! ❤️

Mrsgus · 12/05/2025 19:32

They are probably ordering in a Gregg's through Just Eats or Uber, convenient, cheap and ensures the kids eat something. Not everyone's idea of a healthy breakfast but it's fine to have as a short term treat. I bet the kids are loving it!!

I find the idea of reserving certain foods for certain meals at particular times of the day weird.

Eat whatever you want, whenever you like.

This. Me too. I eat whatever I fancy whenever I fancy it. I had breakfast for dinner the other night - poached egg, avocado etc.

WonderingWanda · 12/05/2025 19:42

Based on this I now think scotch eggs would make a wonderful on the go breakfast meal too. Weirdly....and not very often, I like reheated apple crumble with milk poured over it for breakfast.

User5274959 · 12/05/2025 19:43

I wonder if wires was crossed and it was actually a sausage-in-a-roll

I’d find that a bit odd. We always just did toast and waffles for our year six kids. If they’re not used to eating much at breakfast I’d worry that a full tummy would be distracting. Saying that, if it was greggs, I’d happily eat a sausage roll for breakfast.

Why wouldn’t they be used to eating much?

Why wouldn’t they be used to eating much?

I just meant that if they’re used to having a couple of slices of toast or a bowl of cereal, then a sausage sandwich or sausage roll might fill them up more than they’re used to.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/05/2025 21:51

It’s a good idea, properly loaded calories at the beginning of the day when they need the energy for the brain

Megifer · 12/05/2025 21:54

I used to do my DC a pizza for breakfast sometimes so a sausage roll seems perfectly reasonable to me 😆

paddlinglikecrazy · 12/05/2025 21:56

My DS school doing pastries & fruit this week for them. He’d probably take a sausage roll if one was going 😁

Protein, fat and carbs, all in one easy to eat item - perfect for avoiding energy crashes mid SAT.

It's a great idea.

Im on a diet but I want a sausage roll now 😫 my DD was given a sausage sandwich before her sats. She really looked forward to it. Im not sure what the vegetarian option was there was one but my DD wasn't impressed by it!

MasterBeth · 12/05/2025 22:05

Good grief, people. Different people from different backgrounds eat different breakfasts to you.

It can't be that hard to comprehend, surely??

Anahg · 12/05/2025 22:07

Sausages are breakfast items, so it’s not too much of a stretch. I wouldn’t fancy one personally but I don’t think it’s that out there.

Fuck me, if you ate a Christmas dinner every morning during SATs week then I can understand how it might affect you. But who is being "distracted" by a single sausage roll! Is this Mumsnet competitive under-eating again??

MeltonInTheHeat · 12/05/2025 22:11

TBH- a few years ago I had a mega commute - just shy of 3 hours in the morning and just over 3 hours at night.

I would leave at 5.45 am. And next to my office was a bakery that sold freshly made steak and kidney pies.

THAT was my breakfast for about 8 years.

BangersAndGnash · 12/05/2025 22:24

I can’t believe MN is so full of people who have never seen the phenomenon that is Greggs selling sausage rolls by the MILLIONS to people on their way to work.

And people so aghast that they are sure it must be a sausage IN a roll, including the mother in question who actually contacted the school to check.

Is MN peopled by little figures in gingham aprons who only pop out once a day and get no further than their Cuckoo Clock doorstep ?

It wasn't because the mother was aghast, it was because my niece wanted to know for sure what the options were before selecting her option from the week. I don't think that's unreasonable!

Grim. I certainly wouldn't let my children eat a sausage roll for breakfast. And not during an important week like sats. They need quality food not UFP ground up pigs balls and fat.

They’re sitting down to write stuff on bits of paper, not running an ultra-marathon. If I managed to be a high academic achiever on breakfasts of, eg, a tea with two sugars and Scotch egg as a child, I’m pretty sure your kids could become sufficiently robust not to drop 50 IQ points every time they eat some pastry.

Pigs’ testicles are very nutritious, by the way. High in lean protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins, low in fat.

I think you’ve quoted the wrong person.

Some random thoughts:

Ever had breakfast in Korea? It's just the same as lunch or dinner.

I like your idea of a sausage roll as a fusion of cooked breakfast and danish pastry.

I would rather have cheese than jam with croissants. And cheese and cooked meats are normal for breakfast in Germany and the Netherlands.
