BBC link here to royal funding. Meanwhile more and more people are relying on food banks and school premises are crumbling…

I think the Royal Family are excellent value for money. Long may that continue.

As for the inequality, well some people have and some people have not. It has always been that way, and will stay that way.

JustMyView13 · 11/05/2025 04:56

What would be your alternative to the monarchy? And how would you fund the transition from the current approach, to your proposal.

And in terms of Buckingham Palace repairs, which are stated as the driver for the inflated costs, what would you do with the building?

Blackkittenfluff · 11/05/2025 05:00

The alternative to the monarchy is a republic.

fixingmylife · 11/05/2025 05:01

I agree it is sickening indeed. I think they are out off touch, greedy and should have to make cuts in their astronomical wealth like everyone else. I think of them as the benefit scroungers we should be cutting, rather than those who are carers, disabled or low income families and pensioners.

DefinitelyMaybe92 · 11/05/2025 05:02

As someone else has said, the monarchy are actually excellent value, and on top of that they bring in a lot of tourism. A republic? No, thank you.

Whispee · 11/05/2025 05:38

Okay well instead of the Royals willingly handing 100% of the net profits from their private portfolios to the Treasury of which they recieve 12% back (meaning the Treasury keeps 88%) maybe they should just keep it all and not recieve the sovereign grant? Would the tax payer be better or worse off in that scenario?

Noshadelamp · 11/05/2025 05:50

Why are pp assuming the op wants a republic? I took the post as meaning the RF cost the public a lot of money.

They have their own earnings, don't see why they should get so much from the tax payer.

JMSA · 11/05/2025 05:56

Get shot of the lot of them.

The money they get is a percentage of their earnings, the Treasury keep the rest.

Tutorpuzzle · 11/05/2025 06:22

Yep, sickening is the word. In addition, we’re not even allowed to know how much their security costs the taxpayer. Many, many more millions.

And this is before we even start considering the lunacy of having a head of state who is there because of an accident of birth.

Imagine if Andrew had been the first-born..

Anyotherdude · 11/05/2025 06:33

£153 million, for upkeep of historic buildings that bring in lots of tourists and money to the country, as opposed to: In 2025, the UK is budgeted to spend £15.3 billion on asylum accommodation and support, a significant increase from the original £4.5 billion estimate over the 2019-2029 period.
Which of those costs, in your opinion, benefits the UK more/sickens you less?
Just curious…

Blackkittenfluff · 11/05/2025 05:00

The alternative to the monarchy is a republic.

Or a dictatorship.
But of course, the Monarchy does not run the country. They are figure-heads.
However, few will let the facts get in the way of a chance to haveba pop at someone they deem to be richer than them. Ignorance is live and kicking

netmums100 · 11/05/2025 06:46

I agree with you OP. I don’t understand why anyone would want them.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/05/2025 06:57

On balance they bring in more than they cost. They are significant empowers and look how well Cromwell went. The repercussions are still felt in Ireland.

HoskinsChoice · 11/05/2025 08:22

When they talk about tax payers funded for the royal family, you are only looking at one side of profit and loss. It's like saying Ferrari shouldn't make cars as they're too expensive to manufacture without taking into consideration that when someone buys one they make a huge profit. It is impossible to put a figure on how much revenue the royal family generates because it goes into so many places but we definitely a profit from them. Just think of all the money made from coffees sold, flags bought and underground fares paid for the VE day balcony wave alone. That money goes into private business who then pay at tax on their profits which goes back into public funded services, (NHS, education etc).

When the media tells you the royal family are costing you money, it is just goady, scaremongering stuff that makes the stupid and the gullible froth at the mouth, read and click and generate more for the media. Stop falling for it, they don't cost you anything at all.

There’s worse wastes of money in this country.

I’m neither stupid or gullible, or indeed frothing at the mouth as you say. I’m educated and have a brain and therefore don’t need to rely on what the media say.

In that case, your posts dont mske sense. The royal family makes a profit for this country. If you understand that fully, what is 'sickening' you?

As another poster said above and I agreed with them. It’s been a lovely sun shiny day and I’m not going to enter into a sparring match with you, as much as you might try.
