I’m a single parent, not that high an earner, low professional salary.
I could move anywhere (sort of)
does anyone live in a sort of normal house (not a million quid mansion) that doesn’t have neighbour noise?
any tips for where to look?

YABU - no such thing suck it up buttercup
YANBU - there are ways of finding peaceful housing (and I will tell you them)

Norfolk

TheCurious0range · 07/05/2025 21:00

Also Lincolnshire

What's your budget?

NosnowontheScottishhills · 07/05/2025 21:04

Many parts of Scotland are relatively cheap and blissfully peaceful.
Only downside is the weather rain on the south west/west coast drier but colder on the east.

HistoryAndNature · 07/05/2025 21:04

We live on the edge of a peaceful village in Cambridgeshire. It is a small terraced cottage (2 bedrooms) with a huge garden but garden accessed down a shared path (but we have a courtyard and a fab patio right out the back of house). Neighbours are all single women, 50s - 80s. We paid 260k in 2021.

It’s quiet and friendly but also not too out in the sticks, very easy to get to shops, cities, airports etc. Absolutely love it here. The house would be too small for a lot of people I guess but it suits us well for now and we love the outdoor space.

HairyGarden · 07/05/2025 21:06

Northumberland

Newstartplease24 · 07/05/2025 21:06

could you pm me the village @HistoryAndNature ? If that’s ok, understand if not

Most of Aberdeenshire.

Arlanymor · 07/05/2025 21:07

Plenty but you might have to opt for somewhere very, very rural which comes with connectivity problems of all varieties. How far are you prepared for your child to traveler to school? How close do you need to be to urgent care services? Work presumably isn’t an issue and you can work from home? We need more details for concrete suggestions. Do you need to be near family?

FancyCatSlave · 07/05/2025 21:09

Rutland (where I live)

TheNinny · 07/05/2025 21:09

north east scotland and parts of the north west

IReallyLoveItHere · 07/05/2025 21:12

There are many places if you're happy with rural and for affordability I'd go North East England. Tees valley sort of thing? Or Scottish boarders are nice?

If you want to be closer to civilisation you need to be really choosy about location - on the outskirts of a village, at the end of a lane, etc

I hate noise. I live in a semi in the middle of the village and am very lucky with my neighbours, I worry that could change one day.

Newstartplease24 · 07/05/2025 21:28

Say 400k 3 bedrooms

Need to drive to a city once a week

Any particular city?

Newstartplease24 · 07/05/2025 21:41

Most cities would do. I mean I think I could get a transfer / new job.

I’m in my 50s single lady could probably work from anywhere in my role. Would you mind advising the area as something to add to my shortlist when I’m a little older and want to move as my home right now is a huge detached and def will be downsizing in few years. Thanks!

I live in Perthshire- loads of peace and quiet and easy travelling distance of Edinburgh & Glasgow. It is a lovely part of the world, but you have to be at one with the weather/seasons.

Motherknowsrest · 07/05/2025 21:47

Where do you live now?

Do you want to be single handedly driving your teen everywhere? No public transport or safe footpaths for them to walk to school, activities or friends.

EmeraldRoulette · 07/05/2025 21:47

Another one thinking where @HistoryAndNature lives sounds amazing!

Worcestershire/ Herefordshire.
you could get a very decent 3 bed in a village within 5/ 10 miles of either city and within an hour of Birmingham.
Great schools, lovely surroundings and culture, arts etc.

Arran2024 · 07/05/2025 21:50

North Ayrshire.
