I’m a single parent, not that high an earner, low professional salary.
I could move anywhere (sort of)
does anyone live in a sort of normal house (not a million quid mansion) that doesn’t have neighbour noise?
any tips for where to look?

YABU - no such thing suck it up buttercup
YANBU - there are ways of finding peaceful housing (and I will tell you them)

Scottish Highlands, move near to but not in a village, a little hamlet ideally where everyone has a decent chunk of land round their house.
Mu biggest current noise disturbance is the cuckoos and the lambs.

Shetland.

Can only get to a city in under an hour with a hefty tailwind though.

Lot's of lovely places in the southeast, woukd suggest sevenoaks, westerham, oxted.

Not good for someone on a restricted budget?

Spinachpastapicker · 07/05/2025 23:00

Loads of bits of Scotland are very quiet, low population, houses with plenty space and land round them. 400K could get you something very very nice indeed up here.

Look around Aberdeenshire and Inverness shire as well as the central belt of Edin/Glasgow if you’re thinking 1 hour to a city. (I prefer Inverness but Aberdeen is bigger).

REDB99 · 07/05/2025 23:00

For that budget definitely Northumberland. Could get somewhere decent and very peaceful.

Wowwee1234 · 07/05/2025 23:04

There are excellent places, but they won't stay thst way if publicised. Go on RightMove, go uk wide, budget, rural, detached and see what crops up.

Don't discount that quiet places have higher travel costs, higher food costs, and often terrible broadband, few facilities etc.

Make sure you are certain before you commit.

Sharkknife · 07/05/2025 23:04

Cumbria, outside of the national park boundaries is much more affordable. There are some lovely towns, Ulverston for example with lots of quaint villages in the surrounding areas.

bridgetreilly · 07/05/2025 23:06

You have to be remote. Commuting to a city makes it much harder to find.

Littlejellyuk · 07/05/2025 23:06

My first thought was the lake district is perfect.

minnienono · 07/05/2025 23:07

Plenty of places, £400k buys you a decent house most places other than the SE, more specifically London. Lots of quiet places where I live in Somerset

Tootleytoo · 07/05/2025 23:07

Alnwick in Northumberland

Absolutely gorgeous town. Has a castle (Harry Potter / Hogwarts filmed there), with gardens (Alnwick gardens & treehouse), both open to public. Ruins of twelfth century abbey and priory - loads of history. Barter Books, a Victorian railway station that's been converted into a massive second hand bookshop, they have reading room with open fire, hot chocolate and cookies. Lots of lovely little independent shops and cafes.

The nearest big city is probably Newcastle, about 45 minutes drive / 30 minutes train ride.

The nearest train station is about 5 miles from Alnwick, in Alnmouth, a little seaside village. Idyllic. From there you can head up the Northumberland coast - loads of fishing villages and castles (I love Craster, a traditional fishing village with a nineteen century kipper smokehouse, still in use everyday, Craster kippers are amazing! And Dunstanbrough Castle over the hill from Craster village. Also Bambrough beach and castle (where the Last Kingdom was filmed). There's lots of castles up the Northumberland coast! About 45 mins away you've got Lindisfarne /Holy Island (home of 6th century St Cuthbert, Lindisfarne castle & priory , -its a tidal Island so you can drive from the mainland twice a day when tide is out. You've also got the Farne isles with seals and puffins (dolphin and orcas around at the moment).

Where are you now? There might be places not too far away from you that might be suitable. I don’t think your move needs to be super extreme, to the other side of the country. You could even get something in southern England for £400k for 3 bedrooms. There are lovely rural places all over.

AnAdoptedScot · 07/05/2025 23:15

I second Scotland. Most cities have small towns and villages within commuting distance that would have what you’re looking for. I recommend Perthshire, Angus and parts of Fife. Depending on the location, you can be within commuting distance to Edinburgh, Dundee or Perth (the last two aren’t big cities but have enough going on). The weather is OK, a lot sunnier than the west coast. The people are lovely, scenery beautiful and you can get a 3 or 4 bed detached for under £300k. For £400k you’re into high end property territory here.

Littlejellyuk · 07/05/2025 23:17

Lunt (by Sefton Village /L29 postcode)
Hightown (on the coast/ L38 postcode) and Churchtown (by Southport/ PR9 postcode) are in Merseyside and are lovely places as well 😇

You would have decent transport links to Liverpool, Manchester and Preston also. 😉

GreenFressia · 07/05/2025 23:20

So you'd be looking for detached or possibly semi detached in a calm area- a lot depends on the neighbours- an elderly neighbour would be super quiet for example most likely.

In my sort of area you'd get a pretty compact home for that budget:

https://www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/70109491/?search_identifier=3eb57f4258e435977a3c1143df2c938fe5a5fc0005320230050ef98a8a8070fe

Benefits are proximity to London, the town itself is more like a large (declining!) village but it has an abundance of BNBs (proximity to airport -which is also a bonus for travel, and a second income renting out a parking space etc.) and a disproportionate amount of old people's homes for some reason - there are dozens - so feels safe.

SpottedDonkey · 07/05/2025 23:24

I live in a modest house (certainly not a £million mansion) in a small village in rural Leicestershire. We do suffer from a degree of noise & bad smells from our neighbours, but seeing as they are dairy cows, we are rather on their patch so we can hardly complain. The bloody milk tanker makes a racket as it crosses the cattle grid at 6am, too.

shewasasaint · 07/05/2025 23:31

I must be missing something. Even in a quiet village you’re not guaranteed to avoid noisy or antisocial neighbours, are you? So is an isolated cottage what you want?

Lovely quiet elderly neighbours won’t be there for ever. I’m very lucky in my Victorian terrace in a city to have quiet, considerate neighbours but a friend in a generally nice village has a loud, argumentative, shouty family next to her.

I'd look for a bungalow in a street with similar properties. You can easily get a detached property for that price and make sure they're not crowded or back onto houses with younger people. Maybe in a pretty village with amenities. It's not really about the wider area...I don't really think the whole of Wales or Northumberland is peaceful. But you could have a look at population density figures.

Anyway, this is my plan and my budget is only 280k. A semi detached bungalow with bedrooms away from the party wall is my plan.

Littlejellyuk · 07/05/2025 23:39

Last one I promise! 😊 this is in Hightown, right on the coast!

North East so rural Northumberland or the nicer parts of County Durham... easy each of Newcastle and good transport links from there.

You can get a 3 bed there for 400k . Agree you can get something much bigger elsewhere though.
