I’m a single parent, not that high an earner, low professional salary.
I could move anywhere (sort of)
does anyone live in a sort of normal house (not a million quid mansion) that doesn’t have neighbour noise?
any tips for where to look?

YABU - no such thing suck it up buttercup
YANBU - there are ways of finding peaceful housing (and I will tell you them)

Hell yes.

most of north Cambridgeshire is like this and you can drive relatively quickly into Cambridge. Some villages are on the main train line to London as well.

This one is technically Norfolk.

Probably not a good choice if you want peace and quiet, that property is between two large schools and the street is a nightmare at primary school pick up time!

Downham Market is possibly a good suggestion though because it has a direct train line to London via Cambridge, which is generally reliable. It is quiet compared to a large city but has some facilities and good road links compared to much of the rest of Norfolk. The secondary school is currently very oversubscribed though.

Unless you get a detached house with nothing round you then I’m afraid it’s pot luck - I lived in a lovely semi once but in an idyllic location and ended up with a neighbour digging his basement out for several years!! To be honest if it had been detached you still couldn’t have avoided the row every weekend . Also if you want it Asa holiday let OP most people will indeed want ‘some’ facilities on the doorstep and why would it be bothering you anyway if you aren’t living there??

I think you really need to put the ‘peace and quiet’ thing on a bit of asideburner if it’s truly a holiday let you are looking for. This is a very different market to what you might personally be looking for ‘to live’ - I would be looking at places like Hastings, Eastbourne, Folkestone etc which do have flats ‘in budget’ - or indeed somewhere like Scotland or north wales, which unless you live there will need to be managed well from afar - yes you would get a house etc in some areas of ‘up north or midlands’ - would anyone be looking for weekends in these places, not as often as I think you would like. You have to be realistic - if it’s that it’s primarily for you to move to further down the line then it’s going to be a bit of a compromise on that budget I feel , personally I would rather have a 2 bed flat in a semi ok area than a 3 bed house somewhere I would never want to live .

Where did the holiday let thing come from? I just want somewhere to live where it doesn’t feel like a naff holiday camp disco every time the sun comes out

@Newstartplease24 I may have misread- I thought I saw it in one of your posts - others have said similar so don’t think it’s just me - if that’s not the case then that’s fine -

Crikeyalmighty · 08/05/2025 11:52

ApogiesOP I’m mixing you up with a very similar post!!

Crikeyalmighty · 08/05/2025 11:53

I would definitely recommend west wilts, places like Corsham, Devizes, Box ,

Oxfordshire, Wallingford, Watlington, Thame or villages around these market towns. Can commute to Oxford or into London.

There's a massive new build estate in my town and I use it for my daily walks because it is much quieter than anywhere else in the town. The houses are from a 2 bed terrace to a £1mil + 5 bed. There's a percentage of social housing too, housing association and shared ownership. I would look for something like this in the area you're interested in.

I mentioned it because someone had been posting links to semi-detached houses on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. I pointed out that if you buy a semi one of the things that can happen is that you find you're living next door to a holiday let. So every week you get a new set of noisy neighbours to deal with.

Rural locations are not necessarily quiet! Birds make a lot of noise. Particularly beware if any neighbours have chickens. I was kept awake one night by a cow having an argument with a dog. We also get a traffic jam of combine harvesters outside our bedroom from about 5 a.m. during the summer

One of our neighbours, a newly arrived townie, bought a very handsome rooster because he thought he would look nice in his garden. One of my ponies used to shout back at him every time he crowed! The racket was unbelievable! He eventually re-homed him, he was a very beautiful bird but he crowed all day from 5am on!

That's lovely!

I used to know someone who lived in that area and trying to commute from there to Swansea during peak hours for work, you'd either have to catch a train or leave at least 75 minutes in order to arrive on time.

I always forget about the Wirral, which might make it perfect for OP. I have a friend who lives there and it so beautiful.

Don't underestimate how noisy rural areas can be, it's just a different sort of noise!!
If you've got kids then you need to be aware how different the scottish education system is compared to England.
