I need a British eye - what do you think of my Indian bridal outfit

I’m getting married in July. The ceremony will take place in a church (Fiance is white Christian) followed by a reception in a country house known for its gardens. We will have a Sikh blessing at the temple the following day (I am borrowing a cousins outfit for that).

I will wear a white Saree to honour both my cultures (“white dress” plus Saree) for the church ceremony. I will then change into an Indian outfit called a lehengha. I plan to drink, dance and so lehenghas are considered easier to
manage than a sari.

So for Indian sensibilities the outfit I have fallen in love with (pic 1) is very plain and not “heavy”
enough for a bride. BUT I will be the only woman in Indian clothes. Everyone else will be in summer dresses (well maybe my mum will wear an Indian outfit).

So I have fallen in love with the colour and the fact that it is lighter and less fussy appeals somewhat. As does the price…

What do you think from an English or non Indian perspective? Would you be wowed

Just for reference the second image is more typical of Indian reception bridal wear.

I just don’t want to feel like a disco ball compared to everyone else. My hair will be very glam (luckily I’m blessed in that dept) and I think I have chosen a pretty make up look.

Indian jewellery is obviously quite extravagant so that will dress it up.

My cousins and sister think the first outfit is a complete no go.

Utterly gorgeous.

My only question would be around any very conservative (small 'c') family members or guests that may be flustered by the very cropped top. Is that likely to be an issue? Some of my older family members would be scandalised by a bride showing her bellybutton.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/05/2025 18:57

I think it is absolutely gorgeous. Enjoy your day!

WhySoManySocks · 07/05/2025 18:58

It’s a beautiful plan for the outfits for the day, and both dresses are stunning. I like the first one better - I can see it’s simpler but it is more balanced and very beautiful, whereas the second one looks straight out of Disney.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/05/2025 18:59

Absolutely beautiful - a lot of Indian dressy gear is gorgeous

AcquadiP · 07/05/2025 18:59

I think your choice of outfit is stunning and you'll look gorgeous. It's also a practical choice for summer weather.
The second, more traditional outfit I don't like at all to be honest. To my mind it's the equivalent of a "meringue" wedding dress, it's just too much! Your choice of dress though is pretty, elegant and classy. X

Fabulous! I absolutely love the colours and I bet it will feel WONDERFUL to dance in!!

Im basing my answer on the second dress by the way, which is more exposed without the saree / draped section.

It’s very normal for Hindu and Sikh brides to wear lehenghas - the cropped top and skirt outfit. Anyone whose family is more conservative just wears the skirt higher or uses the scarf for modesty.

See that is my view, the second one is just a bit too much. Especially if no one else is even in heavy embroidery if any at all.

I can see why you would go overboard when all your cousins and sisters are dressed to the nines ie wearing heavier lehenghas. But it just won’t be the case for me. So I don’t want to look like a Christmas tree in comparison

WOW they are absolutely stunning. You will look amazing. Beautiful colours.
I worked with an Indian doctor and her wedding outfits were just stunning too. I would love to attend such a wedding the colours are so beautiful.
I wish you both a wonderful day and a long and happy marriage.

TheClawDecides · 07/05/2025 19:03

It's stunning but perhaps too much flesh on show for a church.

I mean the midriff on show obviously, because lots of brides have off the shoulder dresses.

Having said that, it's your choice and I hope you enjoy the day no matter what you choose.

BeaLola · 07/05/2025 19:05

Simply stunning

Secretsquirels · 07/05/2025 19:05

It’s absolutely beautiful, I think you’ll look amazing! If you’ll be the only person in Indian clothes I don’t think it matters if it’s more wedding-guest than bride traditionally and it looks beautiful.

Vlonk · 07/05/2025 19:06

I’m currently getting a version of this made in India for the ceremony. I am adding very small cap sleeves and the scarf will be ever so slightly more opaque.

Only a tiny slither of my stomach will be out and it will be obscured by a heavier scarf.

The outfit looks beautiful. My only worry would be that the quality and fit of the outfit in real life lives us to the advertising pictures.

Do you know about the quality in real life/have you seen it? Have you found any pics of the dress on people that have bought it and do they look good.

abricotine · 07/05/2025 19:06

Love it 😍

CopperWhite · 07/05/2025 19:06

Both gorgeous but I like the first one best. It really doesn’t matter what anyone else is wearing because you are the bride. This is your opportunity to wear an extravagant dress that you love.

Neither would be for the church. I am wearing a white sari which is mostly covered

Oh I think the second one. The first one is a bit light also though isn’t white a more mourning colour? Rather than celebratory?

GetMeOutOfHere20 · 07/05/2025 19:07

The white sari - I’m not sure and deffo the second outfit for the reception

Yeah my mum has said that but I’ve chosen to ignore that fact. White is obviously traditional in the UK.

First is beyond gorgeous. You do you and enjoy!!

Winter2020 · 07/05/2025 19:08

Your ceremony dress (slightly adapted) will be absolutely beautiful.

beAsensible1 · 07/05/2025 19:09

You can’t compare to anyone else you are the bride. 2 is a lot more bridal. And gorgeous.

the second one is a bit wedding guest.

But they both are both lovely.
