This is cheeky fuckery right?

I live in a block of flats, one of my neighbours knows that my car is fucked and had to be recovered from the hard shoulder on Friday.
The recovery guy said what he thought it was but I wanted to know for sure so I booked (and paid) for a mobile mechanic come out to have a butchers.
Me and DH go out to meet them and neighbour comes out instantly and starts asking the techs loads of questions about his own car! Obviously the mechanics don't know he's just a random neighbour so they answer but I can see they're thinking erm you paid for us to do one thing not diagnose multiple cars.
I turned to neighbour and said oh you are a nosy neighbour aren't you and he pretty much huffed off. But that's a rude thing to do right? Or is it just me.

"Oh, you are a nosy neighbour, aren't you?" 😅

I like it.

DinoLil · 07/05/2025 07:46

That's exactly what my neighbour does whenever I have tradespeople round!

FiftynFooked · 07/05/2025 07:48

Don’t feed the trolls guys! They’re just after reactions.

YANBU OP. Neighbour was a CF. Thought he could get a free consultation!

Eh? Have you been on the wine or something?

EdithBond · 07/05/2025 07:51

I don’t think it’s that bad to ask a mechanic a few questions, as long as it didn’t cost you anything. If the mechanics answered, I’m sure they didn’t mind. It probably happens a lot.

You spoke rudely to your neighbour. IMHO it’s important to be kind, friendly and generous with neighbours. And he wasn’t being nosey. He was asking for a little advice from a professional. I think it was better to let it go, unless he was engaging them in a lot of distracting conversation. In which case, I’d have politely let him know if I was being charged by the hour.

CellophaneFlower · 07/05/2025 07:52

Changeyourlifes · 07/05/2025 06:14

Personally I think this is the fault of the mechanic, they should have checked who they were speaking to or knocked the address or identified the booked car via the license plate or appearance if he found this to be an issue. The fact he was answering the neighbours questions suggests to me that he didn’t mind that much as he was clearly entertaining the conversation.

Agreed.

Yes, it's cheeky of your neighbour, but it's not your responsibility to police him. It's up to the mechanic to say "sorry, I'm here to deal with this car" if he doesn't want to answer his questions.

Yeah, otherwise I wouldn't have wrote it.

I am fully willing to accept I could be the only person on the planet to disagree, they answered so I would take it that are happy too and as it would not affect me one tiny bit I really would have no issue

Because mechanics charge for they’re time and the op is paying for the mechanic to give the neighbour advice!

HOW can you not see that?

LillyPJ · 07/05/2025 05:42

There are nicer ways to explain to your neighbour and the mechanics that he's not the owner of your car. Then they could chat about his problems if they wanted to after they'd finished looking at yours.

Why be nice to someone who’s taking the piss.

I have absolutely no idea why you would choose to create a thread about any of this.

Its ok not to understand. Just skip it and leave OP be.

Um, as annoying as that poster is, their use of ‘have’ is correct …

Edit - Ah, ok. I see what you did there😁

Yes, it is.

katepilar · 07/05/2025 08:06

Your neighbour was very cheeky. Well done for speaking out. There would be a better way to speak to him but its not easy to word it, a lot of people dont know how to /including me/. Thats why I love to read on here peoples suggestions on good wording.

Uberella · 07/05/2025 08:07

HomeTheatreSystem · 07/05/2025 05:16

On 2 counts: wanting their professional advice for free, and eating in to the time you'd paid for to have them see what was wrong with your car.

Exactly

Eh? How did you come to this conclusion?!

Olsen · 07/05/2025 08:10

My neighbour did this! We had some work done to the house. The contractor was visibly very busy working on the house, up to ears in equipment etc and the neighbour asked if he could stop and pop round and look at something for her. He said he was busy but she could book an appointment 😆

Auntiebenita · 07/05/2025 08:11

Nominative · 07/05/2025 07:16

Why "unnecessarily"? Sadly often the only way to deal with rudeness like the neighbour's is to be very blunt in response.

A "nosy neighbour" is someone who spies on you and tries to find out all about your life. That is not what OP's CF neighbour was doing - he was trying to get free advice from the mechanic and distracting him from the work OP was paying for. That is very annoying of him and he had a nerve, but it’s not being a "nosy neighbour".

Well he was nosy enough to clock that the OP had a mechanic looking at her car. His curtain twitching brought him there!

My goodness you're taking this far too seriously. Why did you even come on the thread if you're so annoyed by it?

Soberinthecity · 07/05/2025 08:21

MNpenisadvisor · 07/05/2025 02:52

....it hasn't?

Then what's the problem...? Seriously.

NameChangedForThisOne236 · 07/05/2025 08:25

BlondiePortz · 07/05/2025 07:32

yes that is the only explanation, an owner spoke to someone call the papers

Point being, the OP paid a premium for a mechanic to come to her house to fix her car. She didn’t pay a premium for cheapskates to ask the mechanic questions when the neighbour can take their own car to the garage and pay for the service, just like the OP did. These mechanics often charge by the hour so it’s wasting his time by doing this.

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 07/05/2025 08:29

Imagine sprinting outside to show the paramedics your rash when they have turned up for your neighbour's heart attack 🤔
