I decided to share a bottle of wine with my lovely husband this evening, he poured, I went to go and get another glass. I don’t know what to say! We both knew we go through wine fast in the house but we can make a bottle of wine last 2 days if we take it home from a restaurant.

Why did it never occur to me to check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He’s used 2 375ml bottles of wine for 2 glasses. BECAUSE THATS HOW MUCH OUR WINE GLASSES HOLD!! Im horrified!! I’m already dying of stage 4 cancer so it won’t do much harm to me but to him!!

This one glass of wine is an entire 375ml of wine and it’s been a really really bad day so I’ve already finished the glass. Fuck me!

WIBU to not check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He always pours the wine (he’s the aficionado) and he always pours it to that level. we’ve probably annihilated bottles of wine in 2 glasses!

Fuck me im thick please make me feel better.

Oh and I am a surgeon who does this operation weekly so I really do know everyone who will be doing the surgery.
I decided today to agree to it as they think they can cure me but I swear to god I never expected my actual colleagues would be up close and personal in all my business. At least I’ll be out cold

I’m enjoying a dram of whiskey on the rocks! So raising a glass to you!

Normally a wine drinker. My DH, pours small glasses, he thinks he’s a sommelier! So we
get lots of glasses from a bottle. Sometimes I say pour me a proper glass.

When are you having surgery?

I have a genetic condition that means I have a 78% chance of pancreatic cancer, I also have stage 4 leiomyosarcoma and I work as a surgeon. Would you like me to give you my gmc number?

Not really

gattocattivo · 06/05/2025 21:57

I had no idea the pancreas could be removed! I wonder why it can’t be whipped out when someone gets pancreatic cancer?

In my family member’s case the tumour was wrapped around the hepatic vein by the time it was found, so not possible to remove the pancreas / tumour

Headabovetheparapets · 06/05/2025 23:15

Enjoy the wine and your nails this is not the time for moderation!! An extended time away from clinical healthcare is one of the few times your nails can look fabulous.
& for what is worth I have a set of my grandmothers old wine glasses & now I’d consider them a liqueur/sherry glasses, my wine glasses are buckets🤣🤣
best of luck with your surgery🤗

English not my first language, thanks.

Take no notice. OP is having a go at your spelling but her title is badly worded with no grammar whatsoever 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don’t judge my kitchen, I found out I need surgery to remove basically all my organs that aren’t essential ‘so pancreas (have a pancreatic cancer gene), part
of my liver, my omentum (covers organs), a kidney, my gallbladder, a lot of my bowel, potentially my bladder, part of my vagina and bum hole, then having hope chemotherapy left in there for an hour or so.. so a glass of wine was called for (not a 1/2 bottle)!! Also it’s all being done at my workplace by my colleagues. I love my life !! 🤦‍♀️ 😭

Edited

Do you have Pseudomyxoma peritonea? If not it sounds very similar.

i hope you are okay x

CountryMumof4 · 06/05/2025 23:32

Oh OP, anyone that judges you for having a half bottle of wine needs their head checking. Enjoy it and enjoy whatever treats you can! Best of luck with your surgery. A lot of my close friends are medics/surgeons and some have been treated by their colleagues. I get where you're coming from with them being 'all up in your business' as it were, but at least you know you're in good hands. Best of luck with your surgery and recovery.

LuckyCharmz · 06/05/2025 23:36

There’s an instagrammer called iamnatwoodward who had this op 5 years ago, might be encouraging for you to see how well she is doing with similar prognosis.

sellotapechicken · 06/05/2025 19:56

No I know that, I got 2 small 1/2 bottles of wine on the way home from the hospital and didn’t expect them both to be used for 2 glasses of wine 🤣

If it helps - I’m thick enough to not understand any of this!

sorry to hear about diagnosis and all the best for your surgery. Sending love (and wine!)

also just to clarify; you are busy doing life-saving surgery usually so don’t need to bother yourself with the size of wine glasses!

ClairDeLaLune · 07/05/2025 00:14

Nice one OP, you fill your boots! And your glass! Sounds like you deserve it, I’m very sorry to hear of your diagnosis. However don’t worry - a 375ml bottle of wine is only half a standard bottle. So you’ve only had a glass measuring 187ml, which is just over a medium sized glass in a pub. Not really that much. You enjoy your wine now, cheers 🥂

DragonCity · 07/05/2025 00:14

Hope things go well with your surgery and recovery OP.

Judge your kitchen? Would you like to see mine? And I say, if you have stage 4 cancer, drink all you want!

100% this. Fill yer boots OP and enjoy the wine. Best of luck with the surgery.

No there were two half bottles of wine and the OP and her husband drunk both because her glasses hold half a bottle of wine. So each had 375mls. That's what's shocked the OP. She hadn't realised the size of her glasses before.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 07/05/2025 00:20

Nothing to say that hasn't already been said but I'm wishing you the very very best OP ❤️

Yanbu to drink that wine, I'd say drink as much as you like, even if you weren't dealing with what you are!

I think people should be drinking big glasses in solidarity really...

Hope the operation goes well, and how amazing to have your colleagues that you know and love to look after you.

xx

Haha I have a first in maths and didn’t understand!

Forgot to say - good luck with your surgery OP Flowers

Dear god this thread proves what a cesspit mumsnet has become.

Thick idiots who can't work out why a surgeon with cancer might have long nails. And they think they are soooooo clever too, not realising how completely stupid they showing themselves to be.

Anyway OP all the best for the operation and it was heartening to read the PP's post about her aunt.

Cheers to you! 🍷

PestoPasto · 07/05/2025 00:47

Cctviswatchingme001 · 06/05/2025 22:37

I didn't say she didn't have cancer. I questioned a surgeon having long fake nails.

My best friend is a nurse and goes to the salon and has long acrylics professionally put on if she has more than a week off work.

She regularly has stick ons on, on her days off too.

I completely agree. Unfortunately the cynicism is unavoidable online (and in real life) and if you share personal information you will have to accept that.

EdithBond · 07/05/2025 01:17

Mega pint.

All the best for the op ❤️

ThinWomansBrain · 07/05/2025 01:34

You do know that you don't have to fill the glasses?
That if you swirl the wine at the bottom of the glass it will enhance the bouquet & flavour of the wine?

& a bottle of wine between two is generous, but hardly OTT?

MarxistMags · 07/05/2025 01:51

My best wishes to you, with that diagnosis there will be no internal organs left. I sincerely hope that with such radical surgery you will live a much longer life.
You deserve a vodka and a large cream cake.

ohfourfoxache · 07/05/2025 02:07

@sellotapechicken you sound absolutely bloody awesome, you’ve spent a long time helping patients with what you’re now facing, and I bet you’ve helped people over the years in ways that you can’t even begin to imagine

Time to sit back for a while and let your friends and colleagues look after you

And anyway, as a surgeon you’ve seen the lot - if you’ve seen 1 body you’ve seen them all. Try to put the operating team to the back of your mind, you’re in caring hands x

SapporoBaby · 07/05/2025 02:44

Tbh if my wife was dying of cancer I’d also drink a lot of wine. Sorry about your diagnosis OP.

Maddy70 · 07/05/2025 03:09

Did you have a nice night? Then who cares how big. The glasses are

DreamTheMoors · 07/05/2025 03:58

I don’t like wine - at all, in any glass.
That’s certainly heresy, but it’s true.
I love champagne though, and I don’t care what kind of glass I drink it from.
I’m of the opinion that champagne glasses are far too tiny for champagne.
The bottle is more my style.
lol
@sellotapechicken I hope that soon a winery will craft a wine that’ll cure your ills. And I hope you drink it from the bottle.
Sending love. ❤️
